I am sadly selling my beautiful Smoke Silver Mercedes, with the rare, black MB Tex interior that looks new.  I am moving to Richmond, Va and the partners at my new firm want me to drive something more modern, so a Volkswagen Passat has replaced my dependable 300D.

This car is incredibly reliable and has a great story.  It, and another like it, was purchased new by an unmarried dentist with practices in two states.  He would work up north during the summers, and head south in the winters.  The dentist drove each car whenever he was at the particular house each was kept.  He retired a few years ago, and had both cars in NC.  He had them serviced at a well known Mercedes shop here, when the shop owner and lead tech convinced him to sell it, so the shop could not only enjoy it, but also keep their "old diesel skills" sharp as they replaced the typical w123 chassis parts that tend to fail with age.

Over the next year, the shop completed all service you would expect and more.  All fluids were flushed and changed (oil, coolant, transmission, brakes, differential, fuel tank).  Of course, the oil, transmission, air, and fuel filters were changed (and I have changed the fuel filters during subsequent oil changes).  All V belts were replaced.  The brakes were replaced, including a new master cylinder.  The door lock actuators and vacuum lines were replaced.  The shop used a smoke machine to track any other leak in the vacuum lines and replaced those, plus any that seemed ready for replacement.  The fuel sending unit and exhaust hangers were replaced.  The A/C was converted to R134 and works great.  The shop installed a new power antenna.  A new battery and four new Michelins were added at 107,000 miles, which is when I bought it.  I replaced a rear door strap.

This car starts right up, every time, runs like new, and it is very dependable.  All of the gauges work, with the exception of the dashboard clock (but I have the parts to fix it).  The A/C and heat work well.  This car needs nothing, and I would drive it across the country if I needed to.

Since I have had it, I researched everything about this car and purchased a ton of parts.  I am handy with a wrench, having owned several other classic vehicles and motorcycles, and I was planning to proactively replace some items to ensure trouble free, long-distance driving for another 30 years.  I really planned on keeping this forever, and using it to visit clients and courtrooms across the state.  I have since been advised to avoid this plan.

I purchased, but have not installed, top quality replacement parts, maintenance items, and servicing tools.
These include OEM transmission and valve cover gaskets, transmission filters, Bosch glow plugs, Monark Fuel injector nozzles (already balanced), several oil and fuel (primary and secondary) filters, any and all vacuum connections you can think of, several of each type of fuses (not like blade fuses), signal light bulbs, a diesel fuel nozzle pressure tester, engine mounts, a water pump, valve adjustment wrenches (I used them to check and adjust the valves already), a vacuum line tester, a glow chamber reamer tool, seat net repair kit, a new fuel tank screen and screen removal tool, new fuel injector lines, new vacuum lines, various service manuals, and a whole bunch of other things that do not come to mind immediately.  I spent about $1,900 on these items and the winning bidder will have the option to take them with the 300D for a substantially reduced price.  I also have a set of 15" Mercedes-Benz rims.

I add a few ounces of 2-stroke oil to the fuel tank at every fill up, since the ultra-low sulfer diesel fuel that has been used since 2007 does not provide the same level of lubrication as the earlier fuel did.  I also add an ounce of Naptha to the fuel tank at each fill up to ensure any microbial growth in the station's tanks do not survive in my fuel tank.  I get a pretty consistent 28 mpg in a mix of city and highway driving.

This car does not appear to have ever been in any accidents.  The title and autocheck are clear.  In fact, the autocheck gives it a very high rating compared to its peers.  The paint has the typical age spots, minor dings, and oxidation.  I had a quote to make it look like new for $1,200 from a reputable body shop - not a chain.
There are a couple of cracks in the dashboard, and the right dash pod (vent) slips out of place because it needs to be replaced, they can be sourced for $25.

Please contact me with any questions, a request for any additional pictures, or to set up an inspection.  I will assist with travel arrangements, if needed, at the buyer's expense.

Mercedes pickup could have Nissan DNA

Fri, Apr 3 2015

Daimler and the Renault-Nissan Alliance are already close partners. Now it seems that the upcoming Mercedes-Benz midsize pickup might have a little Nissan DNA in it, too. Or maybe not, depending on how you interpret comments by Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn. "I don't want anybody to think that because they announced a pickup truck, they have to make it with us. Not at all," Ghosn said at the New York Auto Show, according to Automotive News. "They are completely free to do it by themselves, to do it with somebody else, etc., and also, or to do it with us." The Mercedes Vans division is responsible for the truck's development, and the pickup is aimed at the popular global midsize segment against vehicles like the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux. There's no mention of any plans for the model in North America. Instead, Mercedes wants to focus on Latin America, South Africa, Australia and Europe for a launch slated before 2020. Ghosn was quite clear there was no decision either way as of yet. "Is this something that can eventually be on the table? I told you, everything is on the table between us," he said, according to Automotive News. If the two companies do decide to collaborate on a midsize truck, the timing would seem perfect. Nissan completed development of its NP300 Navara in 2014, and the automaker has been at work at least evaluating powertrains for the next Frontier possibly for 2019. Related Video:

Cars with the worst resale value in 2022

Thu, Nov 10 2022

Car values are all over the map right now. Used vehicles that were worth a small fortune earlier this year are now coming back to Earth, but the new vehicle supply remains tight. Prices are still elevated overall, but some models have seen more severe price drops. Depreciation strikes almost every model, supply constraint or not, though a few vehicles are leading the way. New research from analytics iSeeCars found that a handful of cars depreciated more than 50 percent over five years, with the BMW 7 Series dropping 56.9 percent and an average price cut of $61,923 over that time. The vehicles with the highest depreciation — or worst resale value — over five years: BMW 7 Series: -56.9% Maserati Ghibli: -56.3% Jaguar XF: -54% Infiniti QX80: -52.6% Cadillac Escalade ESV: 52.3% Mercedes-Benz S-Class: 51.9% Lincoln Navigator: -51.9% Audi A6: -51.5% Volvo S90: -51.4% Ford Expedition: -50.7% iSeeCarsÂ’ research showed that midsize trucks, sports cars, and fuel-efficient vehicles were slowest to depreciate over five years, while itÂ’s clear that luxury brands tend to lose value much faster. As iSeeCarsÂ’ Executive Analyst Karl Brauer explained, used buyers donÂ’t value high-end vehiclesÂ’ features as much as the first owners, so resale values tend to be softer. The tech and options that made the cars so expensive and appealing new donÂ’t add the same value on the used market. Read more: Cars with the best resale value Interestingly, electric vehicles also depreciated quite heavily, though they were just short of the abysmal numbers in luxury segments. The Nissan Leaf depreciated most among EVs, dropping by 49.1 percent. The average EV depreciation is 44.2 percent, with the Tesla Model S and Model X sliding in right under the bar at 43.7 and 38.8 percent, respectively. As iSeeCars notes, itÂ’s important to be vigilant when car shopping and not let your emotions win over reason. Shiny new luxury cars look great in the showroom, but you could end up taking a bath when you try selling them a few years later on. YouTube's Super Bowl commercial buzz list dominated by automakers [w/videos]

Thu, 31 Jan 2013

After Sunday's big game, YouTube will be the place to watch every commercial that you missed when you left your seat for an emergency guac refill or, as we say in Cleveland, took the Browns to the Super Bowl. That makes YouTube the nation's water cooler on Monday, and it's got some preliminary stats to share in the lead up to kickoff.
As you know, Super Bowl advertisers, particularly automakers, like to endlessly tease their big budget commercials in the weeks before the game, many times revealing them outright days in advance. Because of this, YouTube can tell us which commercials have been viewed the most so far, and their top five list is all automakers.
Kaley Cuoco appears to have been a good investment for Toyota, as her ad for the RAV4 has garnered the most YouTube views - six million and counting - among Super Bowl commercials so far. Second place goes to Mercedes-Benz, though not its actual Super Bowl commercial, but rather the teaser for it. You know, the one with Kate Upton and the car washing, which is up to 5.6 million views. Third place is Audi's Prom commercial (3.3M views), fourth goes to Volkswagen's slightly controversial Get In, Get Happy ad (3.3M views), and the fifth and final spot is bookended by the teaser video for Kaley Cuoco's commercial (3.2M views). You can watch all five in order below.
