1962 Mercedes-Benz 220sb Fintail Sedan ("Heckflosse")

2.2L Straight 6 Engine, 83,xxx mi., manual transmission on the column.

Project car in need of restoration - complete, as far as I know. Engine is free - not seized. Car has been sitting for the last three years.

This Benz spent its entire life on the West coast - I had it shipped here to the East coast with the intention of restoring, but other priorities came up and I never got around to it.

One of the carbs was broken when I received the vehicle, so I hunted down an original replacement, which is installed. It needs fresh fuel and a filter and some work to get the carbs back in sync to get it running again. I changed the oil, put new front brakes on and bled the system, and fixed a problem with the distributor cap. I have had it running in my driveway, and gone so far as to put the car in to first gear. There is some surface rust starting to form since I've had it - I'd like to see someone take on the rest of the project, or find a use for this car. That's really all I know about it, but if you have any questions, please feel free to ask. Oh, and I have all three original keys.

Buyer is responsible for arranging pickup or shipment of the vehicle from my property. A trailer will be required. $500 deposit is due within 48 hours of auction close. Vehicle will not be released for pickup or shipment until full payment has been made. I have a clear title from the previous owner (never titled it in my state since I never got that far) which I will either hand over or ship directly to you.

No deadbeats or scammers, please - let's not waste each other's time. If you have less than 10 feedback, please contact me before bidding.

Car is also for sale locally, so I reserve the right to end the auction early if it sells via that method.

Please note: This is a NO RESERVE auction! The car goes to the highest bidder!

Man makes record-setting drive across the US in 28 hours, 50 minutes

Fri, 01 Nov 2013

Records, as the say, are made to be broken. Whether that's cramming the most hot dogs down your gullet, running a faster mile, or yes, driving across the United States, odds are that there's someone out there wants to eat more, run faster or drive harder. Speaking of that last example, the record for driving from a set location on the east coast, in particular the Red Ball Garage in Manhattan to the Portofino Hotel in Redondo Beach, CA, has been one that has fascinated gearheads since a guy named Cannonball Baker made the trek from New York to LA in 53 hours, 30 minutes, in 1933.
The competition saw its glory days when Car and Driver's Brock Yates came up with the Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining Sea Memorial Trophy Dash (more affectionately known as the Cannonball Run), although the record was most recently set by Alex Roy and his 32-hour, seven-minute trek behind the wheel of a BMW M5 in 2006. Now, there's a new champion, who made the trip from east to west in a scarcely imaginable 28 hours and 50 minutes, behind the wheel of a 2004 Mercedes-Benz CL55 AMG. That's works out to an average speed of 98 miles per hour over the course of 2,813.7 miles.
His name is Ed Bolian, and Jalopnik has a writeup of the epic voyage that details everything from the history of the Cannonball Run to Bolian's preparation and trouble finding co-drivers, to the trip itself. It is well worth a read.

Mercedes goes boating again with G63 AMG-inspired Cigarette

Wed, 06 Feb 2013

Cigarette Racing has another Mercedes-Benz AMG-themed boat headed out to sea. After The SLS AMG-inspired 46-foot Rough Rider in 2010 and the C63 AMG Black Series-inspired 50-foot Marauder in 2012, this year's Miami Boat Show will introduce the 42-foot Huntress, theme provided by the G63 AMG.
The latest Cigarette homage is less overly racy than the ones before, befitting a watercraft modeled off a performance SUV, but don't let the looks fool: there are five Mercury Racing Verado 350SCi outboard engines, each one of them packing a supercharged inline six-cylinder with, natch, 350 horsepower. Those 1,750 horses will be good for 78 miles per hour when you've got some saltwater underneath you.
If you're in South Florida this week, Booth B-23 at the Miami Convention Center could be your best place to see it. Otherwise, like the 536-hp G63 AMG, it could be hard to catch. There's a press release with more information below.

Mercedes-Benz introduces new heavy security M-Class Guard model

Tue, 19 Mar 2013

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled a new addition to the company's line of personal security vehicles. The M-Class Guard features bullet-proof side windows made with special laminated glazing and a polycarbonate inner layer to protect occupants from shards of glass. Mercedes says the M-Class Guard meets protection level VR4 according to the Bullet Resistant Vehicles 2009 standards, based on testing from the independent Ulm-based Ballistics Bureau, which means it can withstand .357 Magnum and .44 fire from multiple angles. It can also stand up to the DM51 hand grenade when equipped with optional floor armoring. Why skimp?
Buyers looking for protection from the world's literal slings and arrows can opt for the ML350 BlueTEC with its 258 horsepower 3.0-liter turbodiesel engine. With 457 pound-feet of torque, the oil-burner should have no trouble hustling the privileged class about. Of course, the ML500 offers a bit more punch courtesy of a 4.6-liter twin-turbo V8 with 408 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque. Prices start at 105,050 euros for the diesel and 118,650 euros for the V8. You can check out the full press release below for more information.
