Help build the Lego McLaren 720S at the Goodwood Festival of Speed

This year's Goodwood Festival of Speed will be host to some extraordinary automobiles, but a contender for coolest vehicle will be a full-size replica of a McLaren 720S made from Lego bricks. And part of what will make it so cool, is that it won't just be a display. It will arrive at the event unfinished, and guests will be able to help finish the build with the final 12,700 pieces. This doesn't mean plenty of work hasn't already been done. According to McLaren, six Lego builders have spent 2,000 hours putting together over 267,000 pieces to the get the car to its current form. That comes to 83 days of non-stop work, which is much longer than the 12 work days the company takes to build an actual McLaren 720S. In fact, the lengthy assembly time is just one of a few ways the Lego McLaren is actually inferior to the real thing. Instead of carbon fiber and aluminum, the Lego model uses humble steel and plastic. The Lego car is heavier than a dry 720S, too. And this is all without considering the fact that you can't actually drive the Lego car. Still, Lego cars are awesome, and we're looking forward to seeing the finished vehicle. McLaren 570S Track Pack removes 55 pounds just to add them back at 150 mph

Though the McLaren 570S is plenty sporty as-is, the British supercar builder decided there was room for improvement. That improvement comes by way of a new Track Pack option for the sports car. The meat of the upgrade are a gaggle of lighter parts to go along with a new rear wing. Inside, leather upholstery is swapped for Alcantara, and the standard buckets are replaced with carbon fiber racing-style units. Combined with lighter wheels, the package reduces the 570S's weight by 55 pounds. The new rear wing, exclusive to the 570S, nullifies the weight gain, and then some, once up to supercar-level speeds. The wing is 12 mm taller than the stock example, and produces an extra 64 pounds of downforce at 150 miles per hour. The other performance-oriented goody included in the package is the McLaren Track Telemetry system. This app records lap times, sector time splits, and logs data for analysis of your performance. Because McLaren knows owners will want people to see that they have the most hardcore 570S available, the company made a couple of visual tweaks, too. The roof is painted in what McLaren calls "Dark Palladium" and the exhaust and wheels are given a "stealth-finish." Based on the photos, this seems to be a fancy way of saying "satin black." The Track Pack is now available for ordering and delivery in 2017. The package isn't cheap at a price of GBP16,500, or $20,595 at current exchange rates. But look at it this way. Watch McLaren's 650S successor drift around a racetrack

Performing big, smoky drifts is more than just hooning around, or so McLaren says. The follow-up to the 12C and 650S is set to debut next month in Geneva, and a new video from McLaren explains that the wonderful dance that is intentionally induced oversteer actually teaches you a lot about car control. Oh, and there are plenty of clips of McLaren's new supercar to boot. Chief Test Driver Chris Goodwin gives a brief overview of the what makes a McLaren so wonderful to drive. Goodwin says that all of the high-speed track development that McLaren performs during the development stage actually makes the car better to drive at low speeds as well.
