McLaren granted trademark for ‘McLaren GT,’ but is it even a car?

Last year McLaren Automotive Limited applied to trademark the name "McLaren GT" in the U.S. and the UK. Last week the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office granted the request. It's tempting to wonder if we're looking at the name of the new McLaren monster car, the three-seat road-going Ultimate Series offering so far known as BP23. McLaren has, after all, called the coupe a "Hyper-GT" in an official press release. There are two hitches to making that connection, though. The first and weakest hitch is that last month, Autocar reported that McLaren CEO Mike Flewitt said he wanted proper names for the company's Ultimate Series cars, "rather than an alphanumeric designation." The Senna was the first under that regime. Yes, we could consider "GT" a name, and there are no numbers involved. Yet that would be a pretty bland follow-up to the Senna, especially a follow-up that's meant to be the new capstone on what McLaren can do, faster than the 243-mile-per-hour F1 and more powerful than the P1. The second, more compelling hitch comes in the line describing what the trademark is for: "Retail store services featuring motor land vehicles." That pinpoints a different use than a road car trademark. McLaren's P1, 650S, 12C Spider, Spider, and Longtail trademark applications are all for "Motor land vehicles, namely, automobiles, and structural parts therefor." McLaren GT, on the other hand, appears to be some kind of storefront that will sell those cars. The trademark for "Jaguar Racing" is also for stores selling cars, among other things, and the trademark for McLaren Qualified applies to "Retail store services featuring pre-owned vehicles." Perhaps this is part of a future dealer initiative or rebranding effort. Or maybe it's nothing, you know how trademarks go. Does this mean the new hypercar won't be called "McLaren GT?" No. But we'll need more clues and a stronger case to make the call either way.

McLaren confirms Alonso's return for Malaysia

Formula One will have one more multiple world champion on the grid in Malaysia as McLaren has confirmed that Fernando Alonso will indeed be returning to the cockpit this weekend. The former two-time champ suffered a major crash during pre-season testing in Barcelona a month ago, and subsequently sat out the season opener in Australia earlier this month. The team refuted rampant rumors that there had been some sort of electrical glitch related to the hybrid Energy Recovery System that caused Alonso to pass out behind the wheel, insisting that nothing out of the ordinary occurred. Since the crash, McLaren reports that its star driver "has followed a rigorous, specialised training programme, designed and closely monitored by leading sports scientists, to ensure his safe and timely return to racing." He visited the team's headquarters in Woking, England, where he met with his engineers and spent some virtual time behind the wheel of the team's state-of-the-art simulator. That means this weekend will mark Fernando's first time racing for McLaren since the end of 2007 when he spent one season with the team, before returning to Renault, with which he had won his two world titles. After two more seasons, he switched to Ferrari, but after failing to emerge from Red Bull's shadow in the seasons that followed, Alonso returned to McLaren. It's a difficult time to be driving for the British team, though: after dismal pre-season testing mired by Alonso's crash and mechanical difficulties related to the new Honda engine, his substitute Kevin Magnussen failed to make it to the starting grid in Melbourne while team-mate Jenson Button managed to finish, but no better than dead last. Meet the carbon-fiber F1 racer that started it all

We take it for granted that Formula One racing cars are made from carbon fiber. But that wasn't always the case, of course. And as with any revolution, this one had to start somewhere. Enter the McLaren MP4/1. It was the very first F1 car built around a carbon-fiber monocoque, introduced at a time when every other team was still using aluminum. McLaren introduced the original MP4 after merging (at Marlboro's behest) with the Project 4 team, bringing its chief Ron Dennis on board to call the shots. The design made its debut in 1981, winning the British Grand Prix at Silverstone that year and serving as the basis for the team's design for the next three years. Niki Lauda won two grands prix behind the wheel of the subsequent MP4B. But more importantly, the carbon-fiber MP4 changed the face not only of racing, but of supercar design to follow. Little wonder then that McLaren hasn't made a race or road car since that hasn't been based around a carbon monocoque chassis, from the prototypical MP4/1 to today's MP4-31, and from the legendary McLaren F1 road car to the latest 570S.
