McLaren lops top off 570S without a performance penalty

McLaren will have fully fleshed out its 570 range with the introduction of this new 570S Spider, which will make its public debut at this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed. So now there's a 570 for the long-distance driver ( 570GT), sun worshiper (570S Spider), and the hardcore sports car fanatic ( 570S). Unlike the 570GT, though, the 570S Spider has almost no reduction in performance compared with the hardtop 570S. The Spider has the same 562-horsepower twin-turbocharged V8, and it still catapults the car to 60 mph in 3.1 seconds. It also has the same top speed of 204 mph with the top up. With the top down, it's reduced to 196 mph. McLaren also says the Spider is just as stiff as the coupe, and the slightly longer rear spoiler helps keep downforce the same. Heck, fuel economy stays the same, too, at 16 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. You know, if you cared about that kind of stuff. That's not to say there isn't any penalty for adding a convertible top. The Spider weighs 101 pounds more than the standard 570S. That's not insignificant, but it probably won't make much of a difference unless you're on the track. In exchange, you'll be able to soak up rays and exhaust noise through the open roof. It won't take long to let in the light either, since the top goes up or down in just 15 seconds. The rear window also acts as a wind deflector and can be electrically raised or lowered, whether or not the top is up. The 570S Spider is available to order right now, starting at $208,800, so it will cost about $10,000 more than the coupe. The Audi R8 Spyder and Porsche 911 Turbo S cost less, too. But on the flip side, you'll pay over $50,000 more for a Ferrari 488 Spider or Lamborghini Huracan Spyder. Related Video: This content is hosted by a third party. Is Seat getting its own version of the VW Up?

Could this be Seat's version of the Volkswagen Up!? Skoda recently showed off its take on the Up! runabout, the Citigo, and it's plausible that VW wants to make the biggest statement possible with the little car. The diminutive hatchback could also be employed to help reverse Seat's fortunes - remember, in May of 2010, the Spanish brand was put on notice about its financial performance. An innovative and inexpensive city car could help round out the planned portfolio expansion.
At the Frankfurt Motor Show, our sister UK site reported that Seat was working on a sporty version of the Up! that would be "good to drive." However, there wasn't any additional information at the source site, so we aren't sure how much of the image above is an actual photo and how much is rendering. We expect it would still come, as the rest, with either the 59- or 74-horsepower, 1.0-liter three-clinder engines.

McLaren MP4-30 marks Honda's hotly anticipated F1 return

McLaren's Formula One fortunes have drastically dropped in performance over the past couple of seasons. The Formula One team with a dozen Drivers' Championships, eight Constructors' Titles and 182 grand prix victories to its name hasn't won a race since 2012, and finished the past two seasons down in fifth place. But now it begins a new era – or rather, restarts one. And this is the machine that's kicking it all off. After a 23-year parting of ways, McLaren has brought Honda back onto the grid for this season, and will be the only team running the Japanese automaker's brand-new RA615H turbocharged hybrid power unit. Both parties are undoubtedly hoping the rekindled partnership will bring them back to the winning days of the late Eighties when Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost memorably drove their equipment to four consecutive World Championships. Largely an evolution of last season's Mercedes-powered MP4-29, the new chassis features a new front-end design to comply with the latest adjustment to the regulations from the FIA, and also incorporates a slimmer rear end built around the new Honda engine and gearbox. It also features a revised livery that adds more black to the red and silver color scheme, and does without a title partner for the time being, but includes the logos of sponsors Mobil1, SAP, TAG Heuer, Johnnie Walker, Hilton, CNN and KPMG, as well as that of Honda. Though this season will likely be more of a transition and development year for McLaren and Honda, all eyes will surely be fixed on the team to see how the new MP4-30 will fare. Fortunately, they've lined up a compelling roster of drivers, lead by former World Champions Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button.
