McLaren recalls P1 for faulty backup hood latch

Wed, Jan 6 2016

The Basics: McLaren Automotive is recalling 122 examples of its P1 hybrid hypercar in the United States, manufactured at the McLaren Production Centre in Woking, England, between March 1, 2013, and October 31, 2015. The Problem: After being disengaged, the secondary hood latch may not properly reengage. So if the primary hood latch is inadvertently released, the front hood could open while the vehicle is in motion, severely hindering visibility and increasing the risk of a crash. (Later examples are already fitted with the new latch.) Injuries/Deaths: Only one incident was reported wherein the hood opened while the vehicle was in motion. The fix: McLaren dealers will install a redesigned hood latch starting this month. The remedy is only expected to take a technician half an hour to complete. If you own one: First of all, you're a very fortunate individual. As relates to the recall, you can expect to hear from the manufacturer to bring your P1 into one of the 18 McLaren dealers across the country to have the repair work carried out. Related Video: RECALL Subject : Hood may Open While Driving/FMVSS 113 Report Receipt Date: DEC 11, 2015 NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V836000 Component(s): LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES Potential Number of Units Affected: 122 Manufacturer: McLaren Automotive Incorporated SUMMARY: McLaren Automotive Incorporated (McLaren) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 P1 hybrid vehicles manufactured March 1, 2013, to October 31, 2015. The affected vehicles have a secondary hood latch that may not properly re-engage. As a result, if the primary latch is released inadvertently, the hood may open while the vehicle is moving. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 113, "Hood Latch System." CONSEQUENCE: If the hood opens while driving it may increase the risk of a crash. REMEDY: McLaren will notify owners, and dealers will replace the hood latch with a newly-designed latch, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in January 2016. Owners may contact McLaren customer service at 1-646-429-8916. NOTES: Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Rogue semi tire totals MLB All-Star's McLaren

Mon, Dec 2 2019

No, unfortunately, that is is not a rear-mounted spare tire for a rally-inspired McLaren 650S. It's a semi truck tire with a mind of its own that crashed into a McLaren dealership and apparently totaled the innocent supercar Cincinnati Reds All-Star pitcher Trevor Bauer. Bauer's Thanksgiving week was a bit marred this year due to a freak accident that looks like something out of a Vacation movie. Well, if Clark Griswold drove a supercar worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, that is. On Bauer's Twitter, spotted by The Drive, he said, "Yesterday, if you told me a semi truck would total my Mclaren [sic], I would’ve believed you. If you told me it would happen like THIS? I wouldÂ’ve said youÂ’re out of your mind. If this isnÂ’t @Mayhem I donÂ’t know what is @Allstate." He explained further on his Instagram, saying, "Happy Thanksgiving everyone! IÂ’m #thankful no one was hurt when this semi truck tire came loose on the freeway crossed 6 lanes of traffic launched over two rows of cars and smashed my #mclaren650s while it was at the dealership."  The car was getting serviced at McLaren Houston, which is right next to Interstate 45, also known as North Freeway, in Texas. According to KHOU, the tire broke free of an 18-wheeler that had just crashed and found its way through the dealership glass. Luckily, nobody was injured. This content is hosted by a third party. McLaren granted trademark for ‘McLaren GT,’ but is it even a car?

Tue, Mar 13 2018

Last year McLaren Automotive Limited applied to trademark the name "McLaren GT" in the U.S. and the UK. Last week the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office granted the request. It's tempting to wonder if we're looking at the name of the new McLaren monster car, the three-seat road-going Ultimate Series offering so far known as BP23. McLaren has, after all, called the coupe a "Hyper-GT" in an official press release. There are two hitches to making that connection, though. The first and weakest hitch is that last month, Autocar reported that McLaren CEO Mike Flewitt said he wanted proper names for the company's Ultimate Series cars, "rather than an alphanumeric designation." The Senna was the first under that regime. Yes, we could consider "GT" a name, and there are no numbers involved. Yet that would be a pretty bland follow-up to the Senna, especially a follow-up that's meant to be the new capstone on what McLaren can do, faster than the 243-mile-per-hour F1 and more powerful than the P1. The second, more compelling hitch comes in the line describing what the trademark is for: "Retail store services featuring motor land vehicles." That pinpoints a different use than a road car trademark. McLaren's P1, 650S, 12C Spider, Spider, and Longtail trademark applications are all for "Motor land vehicles, namely, automobiles, and structural parts therefor." McLaren GT, on the other hand, appears to be some kind of storefront that will sell those cars. The trademark for "Jaguar Racing" is also for stores selling cars, among other things, and the trademark for McLaren Qualified applies to "Retail store services featuring pre-owned vehicles." Perhaps this is part of a future dealer initiative or rebranding effort. Or maybe it's nothing, you know how trademarks go. Does this mean the new hypercar won't be called "McLaren GT?" No. But we'll need more clues and a stronger case to make the call either way.
