McLaren, unlike Ferrari or Lamborghini, won't build an SUV
Wed, Jan 17 2018Lamborghini now has one, and Ferrari says it will introduce one by late 2019 or 2020. But don't expect McLaren to taint its supercar DNA by giving into the temptation to tap into the hot-selling sport utility vehicle segment. "I'm not the first person to point out an SUV is neither particularly sporty or utilitarian," McLaren's chief designer, Dan Parry-Williams, told Top Gear. "It's not 'everything for a reason,' unless the reason is to clutter up the streets," referring to a McLaren design mantra ("everything for a reason", a nod to minimalism and purposefulness in the company's cars). In other words, they're not going to build one since it doesn't fit with the mission of the company: to build ultra high-performance sportscars. Lamborghini showed off its new Urus SUV at an event on the sidelines of the Detroit auto show earlier this week, making for its first presence at the Detroit auto show in several years. It'll start at $200,000. Meanwhile, Ferrari CEO Sergio Marchionne said at the auto show Tuesday that the Italian brand will make not only a battery-electric supercar without peer, but also its first SUV, which will be the "fastest on the market" when it arrives in late 2019 or 2020, according to Bloomberg. McLaren has already said that it aims to increase production, invest GBP1 billion (about $1.38 billion at current exchange rates) and expand its product portfolio, saying that half of its new models will be hybrids by 2022. It's also talked about making a fully electric powertrain for a future Ultimate Series model based on the hybrid P1. Just don't plan on any of them sitting on a new SUV platform — for now, at least.Related Video: This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. The new 679-hp McLaren 688HS leaks online
Fri, Aug 12 2016McLaren, since returning to the road car business a few years back, has refused to let up. Every year the company has released a new model or a new variation of a previous one, and they've all been pretty damn good. Now that the limited production P1 and 675LT are all sold out, the company has been working on a fast new track-focused model to replace it. Thanks to a user on the forum McLaren Life, we now have our first glimpse of the upcoming 688HS, F1-inspired roof scoop and all. The 688 High Sport was commissioned by McLaren Special Operations, the group that builds small-batch bespoke vehicles like the 650S Le Mans or the 650S Can-Am. Carscoops reports the new car will be limited to just 25 models, making it one of the most exclusive road cars on the planet. Like the 675LT, the 688HS will be a faster and leaner version of already fantastic 650S. The number 688 refers to the 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V8's output in metric horsepower, or about 679 in American ponies. It is set to lose weight over the 650S and will be fitted with a number of carbon fiber aero modifications. The photos show a large scoop on the roof and out back two uprights for what appears to be a fixed rear wing. Expect a zero to 60 mph time of less than three seconds and a price tag of more than $350,000, although all 25 models are presumably spoken for. Those itching for a rare car from MSO can hold their breaths for the rumored F1 successor. McLaren may be planning P15 to slot between MP4-12C and P1
Sun, Jan 26 2014McLaren hasn't tried to hide the fact that it is working on cheaper sports car codenamed the P13 that will directly take on the venerated Porsche 911, but now rumor has it that the automaker is also working on a second new model that would slot between the MP4-12C and P1 supercar, which is pictured above. While the car, codenamed P15, is still in the earliest stages of development, McLaren Chief Executive Officer Mike Flewitt teased the project to Autocar. Flewitt admitted that the P15 is still "quite a long way off." Like all of McLaren's current production cars, the P15 would use a tuned version of its 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V8 mounted in the middle of the company's MonoCell carbon fiber monocoque. Flewitt did not say whether the car would use hybrid power like the P1, stick with the 12C's turbos or otherwise. The exact specifications are still being decided. Pricing for the P15 will likely be around 400,000 pounds, or about $660,000 at current exchange rates. That price will position it nicely between the 12C's $229,000 base price and the P1 at $1,150,000. McLaren is reportedly hoping to sell as many as 2,500 P15 models a year when it goes on sale in 2015 or 2016.
