F1's Fernando Alonso gets 35-place penalty for latest Honda engine change

MONZA, Italy — McLaren's Fernando Alonso will collect a 35-place grid penalty for Sunday's Italian Grand Prix after Honda announced changes to his car's power unit. The penalty means the double world champion, whose future at McLaren remains uncertain due to the team's continuing engine woes, will start at the back of the 20-car grid for the last European race of the season. His chances were limited anyway at Monza's 'Temple of Speed,' the fastest circuit on the calendar where engine performance is crucial. His Belgian teammate Stoffel Vandoorne suffered a similar fate when he was handed a 65-place penalty for his home race at Spa-Francorchamps last weekend. Such meaningless penalties incurred through no fault of the driver have come increasingly under scrutiny in Formula One with some saying the system has got out of control and must change. "I hate the fact that we're having to affect the racing because of the technical issues," Formula One managing director Ross Brawn, a title-winning former team principal and ex-Ferrari technical director, told motorsport.com. "I know you can say if a car breaks down in a race that's a technical issue and you've affected the race, but I think the fans understand that. "For a fan to stomach that his hero is on the back of the grid because he had to change the engine, that's not great sport," added the Briton. Brawn suggested a different form of penalty, or removing it altogether, but acknowledged that the sport might have to wait until 2021 when new engine regulations will come into force. The current Formula One regulations stipulate that each driver may use no more than four power units during a championship season, with that number due to be reduced to three next year. Each power unit is made up of six separate elements; the engine, the motor generator unit-kinetic (MGU-K), the motor generator unit-heat (MGU-H), the energy store, turbocharger and control electronics. Grid penalties are imposed if a driver uses more than four of any one of the elements during the course of a season, and for successive breaches. Honda said Alonso was now on his seventh engine and MGU-K, his ninth turbocharger and MGU-H, his sixth energy store and fifth control electronics. Alonso retired from the Belgian Grand Prix but some components of the power unit used there will be run again in Friday's second practice after Honda said they could find no obvious problem.

What sort of livery would you choose for your McLaren P1 GTR? Given that McLaren will only build 35 of them, each priced at nearly $3 million and almost all of them already built by now, it's a choice few of us will ever have to make. But to give us an idea of the answers arrived at by those who have, the British constructor has provided a rare glimpse inside the McLaren P1 GTR Workshop. Located at the company's headquarters in Woking, next to the McLaren GT racing department and the McLaren Special Operations studio, the workshop is charged with looking after those examples of the P1 GTR that their owners have opted to leave in the factory's care. McLaren will bring the cars to specially organized track days and tend to them in between by a crack team of hand-selected technicians and engineers. McLaren's chief designer helps each customer choose how they want their GTR spec'd out. Pictured above are twelve of those examples. There's one in the throwback yellow and green Harrods livery in which the model was launched, one with a similar treatment in deep blue with a yellow stripe, another reminiscent of the F1 GTR's iconic FINA livery, one in a light blue camo made up of racing circuit layouts, a couple in varying shades of McLaren's signature orange, and a handful inspired by the outfit's more recent grand prix racing liveries – including one that looks just like the concept from Monterey. Of course, each P1 GTR is mechanically identical, with their 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 hybrid powertrains tuned to deliver 986 horsepower, unburdened by excess weight, and with aggressive aero. The first seven took part in the first track session at Catalunya in Spain this past October, and they will forever wear a special badge to boast as such. But there'll be more to come this year, including one at Silverstone, another at Spa, a trip to Abu Dhabi, and another to Austin right here in America. Aside from shipping the cars themselves, the staff at the workshop put together 80 metric tons of support equipment for each session. Related Video:

McLaren 720S Spa 68 edition honors McLaren's first F1 win

A couple weeks after McLaren announced a special six-car run of 570S models to commemorate significant moments in the automaker's history, the company has debuted another special edition with racing ties. The "720S Spa 68" collection, fittingly commissioned by McLaren Brussels, honors McLaren's first Formula 1 win which took place at the '68 Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps 50 years ago. It was Bruce McLaren's fourth and final F1 victory before his sudden death in 1970. As McLaren notes, the maiden win in June '68 was later followed in the years since by eight constructor championships and 12 drivers' championships, the first of both in occurring 1974 with Emerson Fittipaldi driving. The three 720S cars all wear MSO's Anniversary Orange paint, the hue of which has been done in the style of the original 1968 M7A F1 car. There are outlines of the track on the bodywork and on the headrests, and numerous inscriptions also note the occasion. There's also a numbered plaque to mark the series number.
