McLaren recalls P1 for faulty backup hood latch

The Basics: McLaren Automotive is recalling 122 examples of its P1 hybrid hypercar in the United States, manufactured at the McLaren Production Centre in Woking, England, between March 1, 2013, and October 31, 2015. The Problem: After being disengaged, the secondary hood latch may not properly reengage. So if the primary hood latch is inadvertently released, the front hood could open while the vehicle is in motion, severely hindering visibility and increasing the risk of a crash. (Later examples are already fitted with the new latch.) Injuries/Deaths: Only one incident was reported wherein the hood opened while the vehicle was in motion. The fix: McLaren dealers will install a redesigned hood latch starting this month. The remedy is only expected to take a technician half an hour to complete. If you own one: First of all, you're a very fortunate individual. As relates to the recall, you can expect to hear from the manufacturer to bring your P1 into one of the 18 McLaren dealers across the country to have the repair work carried out. The affected vehicles have a secondary hood latch that may not properly re-engage. As a result, if the primary latch is released inadvertently, the hood may open while the vehicle is moving. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 113, "Hood Latch System." CONSEQUENCE: If the hood opens while driving it may increase the risk of a crash. REMEDY: McLaren will notify owners, and dealers will replace the hood latch with a newly-designed latch, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in January 2016. McLaren divulges Ultimate Series Speedtail hypercar will make more than 986 hp

With as much as we know about the McLaren Speedtail, we're still missing the finest, most important details. Now that hypercars are no longer unicorns but regularly released products, upper three- and four-digit horsepower figures need to be placed in the context of the segment and technical aspects to make the most impact. However, the latest morsel of news on the Speedtail is another step in the right direction. McLaren Automotive CEO Mike Flewitt told TopGear magazine at an owner's club gathering that the next Ultimate Series champion would produce "more than 1,000 PS," meaning at least 986 horsepower. Flewitt would only say about the rest of the engine that it will employ a recognizable architecture and "a slightly different hybrid application" than in the P1. We'll take that as euphemism for the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 that features throughout the Sports and Super Series ranges, making 426 hp in the 570S GT4 and 710 hp in the 720S. The P1 used a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 making 727 hp, helped by an electric motor adding another 176 hp, for 903 in total. We're not sure how much any owner will feel the 83 hp difference between his P1 and his Speedtail, but Flewitt said the company's focused "on attributes rather than engines." What an owner will register is the Speedtail being much faster than the P1; the latter was limited to 217 miles per hour, the English automaker has already pledged the Speedtail will be the fastest-ever McLaren, which means eclipsing the 243 mph that the F1 achieved. It's likely that the 106 Speedtail owners will also note the three-seat coupe is more comfortable than both than its spiritual inspiration the F1, and the P1. Flewitt said his team's developed a hypercar that's "super comfortable, super to drive," and a "better driving proposition" than some of the multi-million-dollar competition going for top speed records. Speaking of top speed records, the McLaren Speedtail won't be going for any. The horsepower wars might not be over, but when an Aston Martin road car makes 1,130 hp, the battle's effectively been won by everyone who can take the field. Upstarts are turning their armaments on the physical walls of top speed, and Flewitt wants none of it.

Race recap: 2016 Hungarian Grand Prix was the pits

The Hungarian Grand Prix hasn't seen a race this calculated since 2012, when Lewis Hamilton – driving for McLaren – led from pole position to the checkered flag. We don't expect massive action from the Hungaroring, but Hamilton's first win for Mercedes in 2013, the thrilling wet mess in 2014, and Ferrari's surprising dominance in 2015 made us hope for more on-track commotion this year. Hungary denied us that. Hamilton parked his Mercedes-AMG Petronas in second on the grid but stole the lead through Turn 1 and never looked back. Teammate Nico Rosberg yo-yoed behind him in second place, getting into DRS range on a few occasions but never close enough to pass. Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo kept the leading duo honest, but the Aussie couldn't put genuine fear into the German team and finished third. This is the third year in a row for Ricciardo on the Hungary podium. The pits provided our few scraps of excitement. During a stretch when Ricciardo managed to close on Rosberg, Mercedes told Hamilton to speed up. When Hamilton said he couldn't go faster, Mercedes said they'd pit second-place Rosberg first instead. Suddenly, Hamilton found the extra pace. Ricciardo pitted in early, hoping that fresh tires and fast laps could allow him to pass one or both Mercedes drivers when they pitted, but once Hamilton hit the throttle the Red Bull couldn't respond. Further down the lineup, Jenson Button came in on Lap 5 so McLaren could fix his brake pedal problem. The radio exchange before the stop included one forbidden instruction to Button, though, so the Englishman had to return to the pits for a drive-through penalty. Renault's Jolyon Palmer beat Force India's Nico Hulkenberg in a straight-up pit stop battle on Lap 40, but threw the good work away on Lap 49 with a spin on track that cost him three places. A pit wall miscommunication meant the Force India pit crew wasn't ready for Sergio Perez when the Mexican arrived for his second stop on Lap 43. And Daniel Kvyat's regrettable run at Toro Rosso continued, first with car issues, then a drive-through penalty for speeding in the pit lane. Sebastian Vettel brought his Ferrari home fourth, sniffing Ricciardo's gearbox at the flag but unable to get around the Red Bull. Max Verstappen enacted a replay of the final stages of the Spanish Grand Prix, finishing fifth by holding Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen behind for 19 laps.
