McLaren 600LT gets impounded minutes after new owner drives it off the lot

Canada doesn't mess around with excessive speeding, as a McLaren 600LT owner just found out the hard way. The West Vancouver police department caught the 39-year-old McLaren owner doing 161 km/h (100 mph) in a 90 km/h (56 mph) zone. Unfortunately for the owner, Canada impounds cars for speeding that much, and so police impounded the McLaren. The real kicker? This guy had taken delivery of the brand-new car only 10 minutes prior, according to a police statement and local news reports. Tough luck. Getting up to 100 mph in a 600LT takes only about 6 seconds from a dead stop. Yeah, cars are fast these days — the 600LT and 600LT Spider are especially fun to drive. Though we're guessing any sort of plea along those lines would not have worked on the officers in charge of this decision. West Vancouver police took the liberty of photographing the car, using it as an example to other would-be supercar speeders. They also ticketed the driver $368 Canadian for the infraction. Frankly, the $368 fine can't be much of a deterrent for folks who can afford an over-$240,000 car. It's the weeklong separation from the car and dinged license that probably hurt the most. Under British Columbia law, speeding at 40 km/h over the posted speed limit results in the immediate impoundment of the car. That's equivalent to about 25 mph over the limit. This McLaren was doing 70 km/h over. So, anyone driving through British Columbia not wanting their car to be impounded, make sure to keep your speed in check. Even more so if you happened to just pick up a brand new supercar.

McLaren reportedly has another Ultimate Series car in the works - the P15

Automotive publication Autocar is reporting that McLaren has another new Ultimate Series hypercar in development that will be quicker than the P1. The publication says the car is called P15 and will be bare bones with a focus on function and lightweight to make it a monster on the track. The estimate Autocar gives for weight is under 2,900 pounds, and it estimates power to be about 789 horsepower from a version of McLaren's ubiquitous 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8. The publication doesn't say whether the P15 will use some kind of electric assist. If it's as basic and light as implied, there's a decent chance it won't be electrified. But McLaren has previously said it wants to have electrification in all of its cars within 10 years, and that was back in 2014, plus the P1 and the upcoming BP23 had and will have hybrid powertrains. So it would seem natural to give this P15 some form of hybrid motivation. There are reasons to believe this rumor. Back in 2014, McLaren did confirm to us a report, brought up by Autocar, that it was working on a car with the P15 designation. At the time, it was predicted that this car would fit between the top level Super Series car, which is now the 720S, and the P1, and cost roughly half a million dollars. That would at first seem to contradict this new rumor that the P15 will be quicker than P1, but perhaps McLaren will still position it lower if it's as bare bones and stripped out as Autocar suggests. Additionally, Autocar was right about a rumor that McLaren was working on a three-seat F1 successor. which turned out to be the aforementioned BP23. McLaren's CEO confirmed the car's existence and three-seat layout along with a few other details. Specifically, it will be the fastest, most powerful McLaren yet, it will use a hybrid powertrain, and McLaren will build only 106 units. Rowan Atkinson selling his McLaren F1 for $12M

Likely most associated in the US with his portrayal as the bumbling Mr. Bean, British comedian Rowan Atkinson has been quite an auto fanatic for years, making several appearances and at least one crash at the Goodwood Revival. When not racing or acting, he's known for driving a dark purple McLaren F1, but the supercar is now up for sale. Atkinson isn't just giving it away, though, with an asking price of 8 million pounds ($12 million). Atkinson bought the iconic McLaren new in 1997 but has crashed it at least twice since then. The first was a low-speed hit with an Austin Metro in 1999, but a shunt in 2011 did much more harm. McLaren Special Operations reportedly estimated the cost to rebuild the F1 at 910,000 pounds, and Atkinson's insurance company paid to have it done, according to the Western Daily Press in the UK. Now, the McLaren is up for sale by broker Taylor and Crawley with 41,000 miles on it, though it's not pictured on the company's website, as of this writing. "Apart from the accidents, I think Rowan has enjoyed every minute with the F1 and I think he will have withdrawal when it is gone," said David Clark, owner of Taylor and Crawley, to the Western Daily Press. The price of Atkinson's F1 is certainly eye watering. One sold in the UK for about $5.6 million in 2012 and a GTR version went for $5.28 million in 2014. Gooding and Company even estimated one at $12-$14 million during the Monterey Car Week.
