McLaren 720S Spa 68 edition honors McLaren's first F1 win

Thu, Dec 27 2018

A couple weeks after McLaren announced a special six-car run of 570S models to commemorate significant moments in the automaker's history, the company has debuted another special edition with racing ties. The "720S Spa 68" collection, fittingly commissioned by McLaren Brussels, honors McLaren's first Formula 1 win which took place at the '68 Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps 50 years ago. It was Bruce McLaren's fourth and final F1 victory before his sudden death in 1970. As McLaren notes, the maiden win in June '68 was later followed in the years since by eight constructor championships and 12 drivers' championships, the first of both in occurring 1974 with Emerson Fittipaldi driving. The three 720S cars all wear MSO's Anniversary Orange paint, the hue of which has been done in the style of the original 1968 M7A F1 car. There are outlines of the track on the bodywork and on the headrests, and numerous inscriptions also note the occasion. There's also a numbered plaque to mark the series number. There's an orange script on the carbon fiber sill cover just inside the door. This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. Manage Settings. Two of the cars have reportedly already been spoken for, so there's still an available special edition car left for one lucky buyer. Related Video:

Novitec McLaren Senna can hit 124 mph in 6.5 seconds

Wed, Apr 15 2020

The McLaren Senna is quick. Really quick. Zero-to-124-mph-in-6.8-seconds quick. But rather than focusing on the achievement of that absurd number, the Novitec Group looks at the time between 0.0 and 6.8 seconds as a window of opportunity. That's the place where never-satisfied dreamers live, and Novitec has managed to whittle that opening down to 6.5 seconds with its just-announced tuning pack. The standard McLaren Senna comes equipped with a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 that officially registered as the most powerful McLaren road car engine ever made. Paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, M840TR, as it's internally known, produced a claimed 789 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. With Novitec's maximum tune, it makes 889 horsepower and 655 lb-ft of torque.  Put to use, the Novitec Senna can catapult from a standstill to 62 mph in 2.7 seconds, down from 2.8 seconds. Sprinting from zero to 124 mph takes 6.5 seconds, and it boasts a top speed of 208 mph, the same as the regular Senna. Like with its tuned McLaren 720S, Novitec offers three levels of tuning but does not specify the numbers for the two lower tiers. All three are accomplished by adding Novitec's plug-and-play Novitec N-Tronic module. This piece of technology adapts to the Senna's electronic engine control unit (ECU), re-maps the car's injection and ignition, and modifies the electronic boost pressure control. The car's experience has also been altered by a Novitec Race GTR high-performance exhaust system made of Iconel. The exhaust has two 3.7-inch pipes that can be finished in polished stainless or matte black. In collaboration with Vossen Wheels, the Novitec Senna has some new centerlock shoes, too. The forged MC3 wheels feature seven twin-spokes and can be ordered in 72 different colors. The specialty wheels are wrapped in Pirelli P-Zero rubber.  Check out Novitec's new beast in action below. McLaren 720S Track Pack priced at $28,000

Fri, Oct 5 2018

UPDATE: McLaren has released official U.S. pricing for the McLaren 720S Track Pack. The package costs $28,000, and the cost of a complete car with the package is $332,770. The original text has been updated with the official pricing. Two years ago, McLaren Automotive permitted owners to sharpen the 570S coupe with a new Track Pack, which brought the added benefit of lopping 55 pounds off the already svelte two-door. The carmaker says 10 percent of buyers choose it. Earlier this year, the Track Pack migrated to the droptop 570S, eliminating 73 pounds of performance-blunting mass. With the 720S GT3 customer race car testing throughout Europe as you read this, McLaren has announced a Track Pack Specification for the 720S road car. McLaren made the announcement in the UK, but the circuit bundle is certain to make its way here, following the previous two. When it does, you can also expect it to cost roughly the same as a decently powered track car. That's because to get to the Track Pack, you first need to option the Performance Pack, which appends hood and rear fender intakes, carbon fiber exterior mirror caps, and ambient lighting in the engine bay. Outside, the Track Pack combines the so-called "MSO Defined Gloss Finish Visual Carbon Fiber Active Rear Spoiler" with a sports exhaust and "super-lightweight" forged 10-spoke wheels. Inside, a pretzeled titanium bar spanning the cabin secures six-point harnesses for the driver and passenger lightweight carbon fiber racing seats. The driver grips an Alcantara-rimmed steering wheel, and the bespoke division puts its 18th-century-novel naming scheme to work again with the "MSO Defined Satin Visual Carbon Fiber Extended Gearshift Paddles." No changes are made to the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8. Nevertheless, when it's time to win the track-day trophy, the properly equipped 720S driver can make best use of that engine with the McLaren Track Telemetry (MTT) system, which marries data-logging software to three video cameras around the car. When it's all assembled, adding equals subtracting: the $28,000 package price is less than the price of optioning Track Pack components individually, and returns a 53-pound drop in curb weight. Total cost for a Track Pack-equipped 720S is $332,770. Related Video: This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. Manage Settings.
