2018 McLaren 570GT Sport Pack Drivers' Notes Review | Best of both worlds

The 2018 McLaren 570GT is the "entry-level" McLaren, representing the British automaker's Sport Series and slotting under the Super Series models like the 720S. The 570GT, like all McLarens, uses a twin-turbo V8 and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. In the 570GT, the engine displaces 3.8 liters and makes 562 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque. The GT is the twin to the 570S, though for 2018 you can get the GT with the Sport Pack, giving the GT the best of both cars. The $5,950 Sport Pack changes the car's dampers and steering rack, pulling them closer in line with the 570S. The adaptive damping and stability control are tuned the same as on the S model. Our car also comes with carbon-ceramic brakes, Pirelli P-Zero Corsa tires, 10-spoke wheels ($6,200), carbon-fiber trim ($3,090) and a 12-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system ($2,280). It's powerful, has standout design and is one of the reasons McLaren is carving a niche against other European exotics. When the company relaunched its automotive business a decade ago, there were legitimate questions as to why an enthusiast would buy one. Driving this machine on a gorgeous Friday morning with the windows vented, I couldn't help but think that uncertainty has been largely put to rest. Zero to 60 in 3.3 seconds? That feels slow. I pulled up to a stoplight, goosed the throttle and effortlessly hit 60 as I blitzed by dawdling traffic. The brakes are instantaneous and direct. The steering is connected and quick. Tuned for the track, it was more than confidence-inspiring when I had to pull a hard left as another stoplight turned yellow. Oh, and you're so low to the ground. Associate Editor Reese Counts: I like but don't love the 570GT. Yes, it's astoundingly quick. The 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 packs plenty of power. It handles well, with communicative steering and a firm suspension that doesn't punish you over rough pavement. It's relatively practical, too. The interior has a number of small bins, and the luggage shelf above the engine provides an extra bit of storage. Still, it's not enough to win me over. There are a number of little things that bug me.

McLaren, unlike Ferrari or Lamborghini, won't build an SUV

Lamborghini now has one, and Ferrari says it will introduce one by late 2019 or 2020. But don't expect McLaren to taint its supercar DNA by giving into the temptation to tap into the hot-selling sport utility vehicle segment. "I'm not the first person to point out an SUV is neither particularly sporty or utilitarian," McLaren's chief designer, Dan Parry-Williams, told Top Gear. "It's not 'everything for a reason,' unless the reason is to clutter up the streets," referring to a McLaren design mantra ("everything for a reason", a nod to minimalism and purposefulness in the company's cars). In other words, they're not going to build one since it doesn't fit with the mission of the company: to build ultra high-performance sportscars. Lamborghini showed off its new Urus SUV at an event on the sidelines of the Detroit auto show earlier this week, making for its first presence at the Detroit auto show in several years. It'll start at $200,000. Meanwhile, Ferrari CEO Sergio Marchionne said at the auto show Tuesday that the Italian brand will make not only a battery-electric supercar without peer, but also its first SUV, which will be the "fastest on the market" when it arrives in late 2019 or 2020, according to Bloomberg. McLaren has already said that it aims to increase production, invest GBP1 billion (about $1.38 billion at current exchange rates) and expand its product portfolio, saying that half of its new models will be hybrids by 2022. It's also talked about making a fully electric powertrain for a future Ultimate Series model based on the hybrid P1. Ice-T arrested for not paying a toll — in his new McLaren

He plays a cop on TV, but that wasn't enough to keep rapper/actor Ice-T from getting arrested Wednesday morning — with the real cops saying he evaded paying a toll on the New Jersey side of the George Washington Bridge. T, who plays an NYPD detective on "Law & Order: SVU," was in the E-ZPass lane, for cars with a toll transmitter. His brand-new McLaren 720S did not have one. And, being new and freshly shipped in from California, the McLaren didn't have license plates yet, either, another matter the Port Authority police took exception to. In some states, you don't get plates right away. It's unclear whether he had a temporary tag, but presumably the cops figured the lack of plates was part of an attempt to elude the toll. Ice-T told center-of-the-celebrity-news-universe TMZ that he forgot he didn't have his E-ZPass, and that he has seven of them. (And therefore, he must have at least that many cars. Wonder if they're all on the order of the McLaren — yeah, based on his Instagram account, that appears to be a yes.) More money, more problems. He says he was arrested but was allowed to leave the scene of what can only loosely be termed as the crime, and went to work on the "SVU" set, equipped with fresh background material on police work. So, high-profile guy, extremely high-profile car. Doesn't catch a break for portraying a cop, and perhaps that even worked against him. And his Twitter followers offer a couple of other entirely plausible explanations. But to arrest anyone for not paying a toll? Cue that weird sound effect in the "SVU" opening: Chunk-chunk.
