McLaren's official winter tire package makes your 570S a weather beater

We're just about to December, the temperature is dropping all around the country, and at least here in Michigan, we've even seen some snow flurries in the past month. That means it's time to squirrel away the fancy expensive sports cars in favor of some safe, boring box until warm weather returns and salt departs, right? Wrong! If you have a McLaren 570S, 570GT or 570 Spider, you already have your winter car, because McLaren has a winter tire package for it. The company partnered with Pirelli to offer a set of MC Sottozero 3 winter tires designed specifically for the Sports Series McLarens, which includes the whole 570 line in the U.S., as well as the 540C overseas. The tires come pre-mounted to a set of forged, gun-metal finish wheels for quick installation. The company says they provide substantially better performance than normal tires at temperatures under 44 degrees Fahrenheit, and the chunkier tread is better for displacing water and snow. We're not sure how many McLaren owners will take the company up on this new option, considering how protective people are over their supercars, but we sure hope some will. We certainly would enjoy being able to drive a McLaren all year long. It would even be a fairly smart choice for winter duty, particularly in salt-happy regions, since the carbon fiber body and chassis are naturally rust-proof. McLaren's 10,000th car shows how close it is to catching up with Ferrari and Lamborghini

The move from Formula One to road-worthy production cars isn't an easy one. Just over five years since production on the MP4-12C began, McLaren completed production of its 10,000th car. Even more noteworthy, it took 42 months to build the first 5,000 cars but only 22 months to make it to 10,000. The automaker, which until 2011 had only built a single line of road-going cars, appears to be on a roll with more volume and more models hitting the streets every year. McLaren is set to nearly double its year-over year sales in 2016. The automaker sold 1,654 cars in 2015 and expects to hit 3,000 sales in 2016. While those are good sales number for a relatively new full-line supercar manufacturer, they're still short of the competition. Lamborghini had its best year ever in 2015 with 3,245 cars sold. Ferrari plans to expand production to 9,000 cars annually by 2019. McLaren may be able to compete with the big boys on the track, but it still has a ways to go before it can match their sales. The 10,000th car to roll off the line was a 570S wrapped in Ceramic Grey, a color from McLaren Special Operations. MSO is the division behind awesome cars like the 679-horsepower McLaren MSO HS. The car will be held by the company for its Heritage Collection. The McLaren Sport Series (540C, 570S, and 570GT) were a big boon toward boosting the company's output. An additional production line was built, doubling output from 10 to 20 cars per day. We hope McLaren can continue this growth, and we're looking forward to more new products like the upcoming three-seat F1 successor. We just wish they could come up with some better names. One F1 comeback is enough for Jenson Button

MONACO - Formula One may have seen the last of Jenson Button following the 2009 world champion's Monaco Grand Prix comeback as stand-in for McLaren race regular Fernando Alonso. The 37-year-old Briton made it abundantly clear at the weekend that while he enjoyed the experience more than expected he had no desire to do any more Formula One races this year. "It has not whetted the appetite for any more -- definitely not," said Button, who started last and from the pit lane due to penalties and retired from the race after colliding with Pascal Wehrlein's Sauber. Button, who was deemed at fault by race stewards and given a three-place grid drop for a next race that may never happen, will have breathed a big sigh of relief to see double world champion Alonso emerge unscathed from a crash-strewn Indianapolis 500. Had the Spaniard been injured in a race he led for 27 laps before his car's Honda engine expired in all-too familiar circumstances with 21 of the 200 laps remaining, Button's services might have been required further. Asked before the race whether he might return as a stand-in later in the year if required, Button replied: "Who knows, but I don't plan on it. "I also know that the team don't plan on moving their race drivers around. "So no, it's definitely not the plan for me to race again this year in Formula One. In other categories, possibly yes. But not in Formula One, I've got my own things that I'm enjoying away from the sport at the moment." Former champions McLaren -- the only team yet to score a point this year -- have an option on Button for 2018 but he left no doubt that he had not missed the sport he left at the end of last year. While he said he had enjoyed practice "more than I have for a couple of years to be fair", he was also clearly unsettled by the width and characteristics of the new cars and the prospect of trying to overtake. The best moment of his afternoon was perhaps a phone call from Alonso before the start, with the Spaniard wishing him luck and asking him to take car of his car.
