McLaren Speedtail hits 250 mph over 30 times at Kennedy Space Center

Mon, Dec 23 2019

The McLaren Speedtail was billed as having a 250-mile-per-hour top speed when it was revealed over a year ago, and now McLaren is proving it. High-speed testing at the Johnny Bohmer Proving Grounds at Kennedy Space Center in Florida saw a Speedtail prototype named XP2 hit 250 mph over 30(!) times. McLaren chief test driver Kenny Brack was the lucky man behind the wheel mashing the go pedal. It’s impossible to talk top speed and McLaren without mentioning Andy WallaceÂ’s epic runs in the McLaren F1 at the Ehra-Lessian proving ground in Germany. That carÂ’s official record is set at 240.1 mph, and itÂ’s still the fastest production car in the world with a naturally aspirated engine. It managed to attain this top speed record with a 627-horsepower V12 and six-speed manual gearbox. The Speedtail has a hybrid powertrain that puts out a combined 1,055 horsepower and 848 pound-feet of torque. WeÂ’re still waiting on exact details as it concerns the SpeedtailÂ’s powertrain combination of gas engine and electric motor(s). McLaren also announced today that production of the Speedtail has begun at the McLaren Production Center in Woking, UK. These are the first of 106 customer orders set to be built, and deliveries will begin in February 2020. As a reminder, the Speedtail wonÂ’t be road legal in the U.S. due to the three-seat configuration not meeting safety requirements. Regardless, one-third of all Speedtails were sold to American customers, which means those folks will need to apply for a show and display exemption to enjoy their Speedtails. Related Video:

Seat hatches hot little Ibiza Cupra Concept in Beijing [w/video]

Mon, 23 Apr 2012

Just about every brand under the Volkswagen Group umbrella has its own performance line these days. Marques like Lamborghini, Bugatti and Porsche may not need them, but Volkswagen has the R line, Audi has the RS range, Skoda offers the vRS models, and Seat badges its under the Cupra name.
It's a nameplate that's become synonymous with Latin-flavored hot hatches in markets around the world, and one of those vital markets is China. Little wonder, then, that Seat chose the Beijing Motor Show to launch its latest Cupra model.
Technically billed as a "concept," even Seat admits the vehicle you see here is pretty darn close to the production model that is scheduled to debut later this year. It starts out with the latest Ibiza hatchback (which itself shares its underpinnings with the Volkswagen Polo) and upgrades it with VW's celebrated 1.4 TSI engine that packs a turbocharger, supercharger and direct injection to produce a solid 180 horsepower. All that juice is driven to the front wheels through an electronic differential and seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

This McLaren F1 replica was built from scrap by a Top Gear fanatic

Tue, Dec 16 2014

If Field of Dreams had been made about an automotive enthusiast, its most famous line would need to have been, "If you build it, they will come... and then build their own replicas of yours." More evidence of that comes from Polish amateur mechanic Jack Mazur, who decided to build a copy of his dream car, the McLaren F1. Mazur spent eight years on it, using scrap metal and parts to fabricate everything from the chassis to the seats, spending 20,000 pounds ($31,297 US) to get it done. Mazur is no novice at such endeavors, either, having worked up a homebrew Porsche 911, a Meyers Manx dune buggy and at least three Lamborghini Countachs, among other creations. It sounds like his McLaren replica, however, is the only one with a special seat just for Top Gear co-host Richard Hammond. This video tells Mazur's story in his own words.
