It has a NEW Mazda reman engine with a 12 month, 12K mile warranty from Mazda. The warranty started 04/30/13 so you there is 8 months left! The new motor has about 3000 miles on it. I am a former mechanic and installed the motor myself. I also installed a brand new Exedy HD clutch. Its the same as the OEM clutch just with a little more durability.
Common Problems With RX-8's that ARE REPAIRED on this car:
1. The Engine. RX-8's are excellent cars, but the motors are notorious for losing compression. 600 miles after I purchased this car, the engine lost compression. A new motor from Mazda is $2001 plus about $2000 in labor for the installation. According to the warranty records this is this RX-8's third motor, the first one made it to 27K and the second to 96K. If you are looking at other RX-8's that seem ok, even if they are from a dealer (mine was), be very careful. Its likely it was traded in or sold because the motor is loosing compression which can only be truly tested at a Mazda dealer. You will start to notice the motor takes a crank or so longer to start when the motor is hot. 600 miles later it begins to stall and won't start at all when the motor is warm. DON'T BUY AN RX-8 WITHOUT A WARRANTY unless you can afford another $4,000 for an engine replacement. This car has a new motor with excellent compression, and if taken care of, it should last another 50-100K miles.
Since the motor was installed it has been running pre-mix oil(2-stroke) to help lubricate the engine. First generation RX-8s only have four oil injectors instead of six on the second generation. I have been using Shell Nautilus. Other first gen motors not running pre-mix will end up failing pre-maturely. Its only a matter of time.
2. The ignition system. Most RX-8's have issues with the ignition coils going bad. This car has brand new coils and wires.
3. The emissions system. Other RX-8's have issues blowing through catalytic converters. This car has a new cat that was covered under warranty and is good to go. Dealer price on a new cat is $1200.
4. The clutch pedal. The RX-8 was designed with a poor clutch assembly. The metal will literally snap off and leave you stranded with no way to disengage the clutch. This car had the clutch pedal removed and professionally welded.
The Bad:
1. There are some hail dings on the hood. It is noticeable in the right light.
2. The body overall is not perfect. There are a few door dings, and a scrape on the rear bumper. I would give the body a 7/10.
3. The clutch does squawk a little while its engaging, this in no way effects performance, its just the surfaces mating.

Other than that the car drives like new. There is no rust because they car is originally from Washington and they use beet juice on the roads, not salt. Other RX-8's in the north may seem like they have no rust but just wait a year or two.
Sounds like RX-8's are a problem car, why would you want one?
RX-8's are amazing cars with the best handling in its class. The motor is powerful yet extremely smooth. I bought it because it was the closest thing to a roadster that would still fit a car seat in the back. Unfortunately we don't use it enough to justify keeping it as a fourth vehicle.

Mazda RX-3 restomod makes Leno scream, us cheer
Tue, Aug 25 2015The Mazda RX-3 Savanna was the rotary-engined version of the Mazda 808 Grand Familia. Sold in the US from 1971 to 1978, the little Japanese fastback earned a reputation as an excellent racecar, winning events all over the world. A racing connection is how a fantastic 1973 restomod example owned by Savant Young made its way to Jay Leno's Garage. Young said that when he was a boy his uncle used to street race an RX-3, and Young liked how the RX-3 sounded and the fact that a tiny import could go up against and beat big V8s of the time. Leno admitted that he has no connection to the RX-3, saying it's not the kind of car he typically likes. But he liked Young's custom update so much that when he saw the coupe sitting outside the Petersen Museum in Los Angeles, he waited for the owner to show up. Young's changes over the 15 years he's owned the car include dropping in the rotary engine and running gear from the second-generation Mazda RX-7, bridge-ported and methane injected. At 15 pounds of boost he says it's putting out about 400 horsepower. The rear end comes from a Toyota Hilux half-ton pickup, to help put all that power down in a car that weighs maybe 2,100 pounds. The color is taken from the Lamborghini palette. Disc brakes all around, 14-inchers up front, control the velocity. Nothing controls the gas mileage, said to be "maybe 12 mpg." And nothing could stop Leno from whooping it up during the driver. Check out the fun in the video above.
Mazda RT24-P brings KODO style to the Rolex 24 at Daytona
Thu, Nov 17 2016In addition to its new CX-5 crossover, Mazda revealed its new racecar, the RT24-P, at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The car has been designed for the Daytona Prototype international (DPi) class in IMSA's WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and will make its racing debut at the Rolex 24 at Daytona. It was designed using Mazda's KODO design language, which the brand has so successfully applied to its road-going cars. The racer's relation to Mazda's production cars is made obvious by the small five-point grille at the tip of the RT24-P's nose. While plenty of credit needs to go to the stylists and aerodynamicists at Mazda and Multimatic, one of the companies Mazda partnered with on the car, some of the credit needs to go to IMSA's new DPi rules for 2017. The new DPi class is very similar to the LMP2 class that it competes with in the WeatherTech series, with some noteworthy differences. The DPi class allows manufacturers to create unique bodies and engine packages for one of the four chassis available. The LMP2 class requires competitors to use the chassis companies' bodies, and are restricted to one engine package. View 14 Photos As for the powertrain, the Mazda RT24-P uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that puts out roughly 600 horsepower. Mazda used the same engine in its P2-class race car last season. Mazda's body and engine will ride atop a chassis developed by Riley Technologies and Multimatic. You may remember that latter company as the one that developed the awesome spool valve shocks on the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2. The RT24-P will be campaigned by Speedsource, a company that has been racing Mazdas in American endurance racing for years, including last year's P2 cars. Considering Mazda's success in making such a cool race car, we're excited to see what other manufacturers do with the extra design freedom of the DPi class. Both Chevrolet and Ford competed last year in the WeatherTech prototype class with Daytona Prototype-style cars, and Honda competed with an LMP-style racer. Depending on what other makes decide, this year's WeatherTech line-up could have some nifty designs.
