The RX line of performance cars is legendary for its unique rotary engine that uses two rotating triangle shaped rotors inside a cylindrical casing to generate power. With far fewer moving parts than a conventional piston engine, the rotary is easier to maintain while its compact size helps create a perfect 50/50 front to rear weight distribution, a major contributor to the RX-8's impressive handling. The RX-8's handling is otherworldly, amazingly neutral in the corners and completely predictable in rapid maneuvers. The RX-8 also has a unique body with forward facing rear half doors that allow access to a surprisingly roomy rear seat comprised of two bucket style seats divided by a wide center console. This set up allows you to have the look and performance associated with a high-end sport coupe, but the functionality of a two-door sedan. There is even a decent size trunk for when overnight trips beckon. The RX-8's stylish interior, great seats and marvelously precise transmission make it a delight to drive.
The RX-8 comes in Sport, Touring and Grand Touring trims. The Grand Touring RX-8 includes 4-wheel anti-lock brakes, front and rear ventilated disc brakes, power windows, locks and mirrors, AM/FM stereo with 6-disc CD changer, air conditioning, front side-impact airbags, cruise control, rear seat pass-through, side curtain airbags, steering wheel touch controls for audio and cruise, 18-inch alloy wheels, tilt wheel, tire pressure monitor, limited-slip differential, electronic traction and stability control, HID head lamps, fog lights, 300-watt Bose audio, power sunroof, advanced Keyless entry, heated side mirrors, heat leather seats, eight-way power driver's seat, and color-keyed synthetic leather door inserts.

Mazda CX-5 in auto-brake accident on Japanese test drive
Thu, 14 Nov 2013As we slowly march towards a world where our cars will drive for us, there will be mishaps. Systems will act up, not behave has intended or we'll simply forget to turn them on. We all remember when Volvo tested the S60's City Safety system. Now Mazda has had an issue of its own.
During a test of a Mazda CX-5's Smart City Brake Support on a dealership lot in Japan, a prospective customer and a dealership employee were injured when they hit a urethane barrier used for testing the system. According to Bloomberg, which spoke with the Saitama Prefectural Police, the impact with the barrier left the customer with an injured neck while the dealership employee suffered a fractured arm. Considering the injuries, we imagine this wasn't a small barrier.
"For any safety function, it's impossible to be 100-percent free of accidents. These technical functions aren't always the easiest to understand," IHS Automotive auto parts analyst, Hiroshi Ataka told Bloomberg.
2018 Mazda CX-5 spied testing in Southern California
Tue, Aug 9 2016It appears the replacement for the Mazda CX-5 is on its way. The current model, though a few years old at this point, is still one of our favorite crossovers on the market. Its combination of handsome styling, practicality, and a genuine fun-to-drive nature make it a winner in our hearts. Hopefully this new model doesn't stray too far from that winning recipe. At least on the outside, that seems to be the case. The spy photos reveal Mazda's Kodo design language in full bloom. The general shape is the same as the current model, but the curves are a little tighter and appear similar to the new CX-9 and Chinese-only CX-4. The grille loses the horizontal bars for a deep-set mesh pattern, while the whole fascia appears to be more upright. The headlights and taillights look to be slimmer and slightly re-sculpted versions of the current shape. Other details for the upcoming CX-5 are scarce. The crossover is expected to debut next year as a 2018 model. It's unknown what engines or transmissions will be available, though the current powertrains are likely to carry over. There's also the rumor of a Mazda diesel making its way over, but, as always, it seems like a long shot. Related Video:
2014 Mazda6 recalled due to fuel overfill fire risk
Fri, 02 May 2014Mazda is recalling 19,000 Mazda6 sedans from model year 2014, over concerns that the fuel tanks can be filled up too much. What is it with Mazda and fuel tanks?
The big concern is, obviously, spillage when filling up. There's also a risk that a radical temperature swing could cause the fuel volume to expand, causing a full tank to spill over without the driver knowing about it. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration bulletin, if the fuel spills over, it could end up in something called the charcoal canister, which helps with the car's emissions. If it fills up the canister, it could leak out onto the road. None of this is really desirable.
The affected vehicles were all built between October 25, 2012 and May 9, 2013. It's unclear if there have been any fires due to this problem. Dealers should have been notified by now, while owners should begin receiving official recall notifications very soon.
