OVERVIEW:
81,800 original miles – Third Owner – 5 speed manual - 'Tender Blue' metallic exterior, grey cloth interior – Never in an Accident – 100% southern car – No rust – no dings or dents - runs beautifully!

With low original miles and completely pure (stock), this car is an absolute must for a rotary enthusiast.  Additionally, unique from other first generation RX-7’s, the GSL-SE was only available for model years 1984/1985 and comes equipped with the more powerful, fuel injected, 13B 1.3L rotary engine. This engine became Mazda's staple rotary on the second generation model.  This car is a true enthusiast’s dream as it is the most coveted of the first generation RX7's.

The car is loaded with everything, including the rare bronze factory tint. It does NOT have factory leather (thank goodness; it only came in ugly brown or burgundy) or factory power steering.

An absolute joy to drive. She pulls hard, shifts smoothly and looks great. Twist up the roof, open the dash vents (the old kind that let air flow directly into the car, the faster you go, the more air it blows!) and listen to the great sounding engine and exhaust. Don’t fret about the Racing Beat exhaust, it doesn’t sound like a Civic with a big exhaust. Great handling as you navigate the twisty roads and enjoy that feeling of a pure vehicle, low to the ground.

CARE & MAINTENANCE:
The vehicle has been well maintained myself or with Mazcare in Marietta (a rotary specialized shop).  Typical oil changes and maintenance have occurred.

When purchased, the catalytic converter had been removed for the Racing Beat exhaust and muffler, I had the catalytic converter reinstalled to meet emissions in metro Atlanta through 2010. It was since removed, replaced with pre-silencer and the catalytic converter goes with the car.

I replaced all exterior light bulbs, interior lights, headlights (Sylvania Silverstar), replaced rear hatch rubber molding, driver/passenger door rubber moldings, rear hatch struts, stock speakers with exact fit replacements. I had one door ding removed several years back, body is in excellent shape – very unusual for the age.

Recent maintenance (05/2013) at Mazcare included, re-installation of presilencer, new spark plugs, new distributor cap and rotor, ignition wires, ignition coil, repack of front wheel bearings, replace idler arm bushings, fan clutch and alternator belt. All of this was done to keep car in tip-top shape.

Everything is in working condition with the following exceptions:
• power antennae does not work: I’ve since turned stereo and antennae off so that it doesn't needlessly run the antenna motor; the motor would run at start/stop. The stereo works great, just not the best reception with the antennae in the body of the car.
• a/c compressor runs but is not cold, needs freon recharge or converted to 134a. I just did not drive the car on really hot days as the little compressor could not keep up with the Atlanta heat.
• rear wiper does not work (it did work after I replaced hatch shocks, but hasn't for some time now)
• minor tear in seam of driver’s seat
• paint oxidation/fading on sunroof/roof (worst) and hood

VEHICLE FEATURES:
• 1985 GSL-SE model with 81,800(+) miles!

• Limited-slip differential
• 5-speed MANUAL transmission

Weekly Recap: Mazda's rotary revival ignites Tokyo Motor Show

Sat, Oct 31 2015

Forty-eight years ago Mazda pioneered rotary engines in the Cosmo Sport. Mazda then honed the technology, won with it on the racetrack, and made it one of its signature features. If you're an enthusiast, rotary was a reason you like Mazda. It's a great part of the company's past. But until this week, that's exactly what we thought it was. History. That all changed with the reveal of the RX-Vision concept at the Tokyo Motor Show, which reignited the passions of the Mazda faithful. Suddenly, rotary was no longer a relic. The rotary concept shown in Japan was a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports car wrapped in the company's latest Kodo design language. It's powered by a Skyactiv-R unit (R for rotary), though specs were not disclosed. Mass production is "currently on hold," Mazda said, maintaining it never stopped development of rotary technology, even after the demise of the RX-8. Beyond that, we know nothing, other than the optimistic statement Mazda offered that: the "RX-Vision represents a vision of the future that Mazda hopes to one day make into reality." Put simply: we agree. OTHER NEWS & NOTES: Subaru previews next-gen Impreza While the Mazda concept was the headliner from Tokyo, Subaru's Impreza design study also stood out. The five-door concept is a signpost for the look of next-generation Impreza. It blends sportiness with functionality, and it's wrapped in a striking shade of 'high-luminance silver.' The fenders are flared to signal Subaru's all-wheel-drive capability, and the front has futuristic headlights that look like something from an Audi E-Tron concept. While most of this will be toned down in production, the concept suggests an elevated style for the Impreza, which is due as a 2017 model. Porsche adds potent GTS model to 2017 Macan line Porsche is giving the Macan crossover the GTS treatment, which will start at $68,195 when it goes on sale in March. GTS translates to more power, a sportier suspension, and interior and exterior design cues that sharpen the looks and reflexes of one of the most athletic SUVs on the market. Porsche recalibrated the 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 from the Macan S to make 360 hp and 369 lb-ft, (up from 340 hp and 339 lb-ft in the S). It teams with a seven-speed PDK gearbox and all-wheel drive. An air suspension is standard. The body features a slew of black accents, and the standard 20-inch RS Spyder wheels are done up in a shade of satin black. The cabin gets leather, Alcantara, and GTS logos.

Japanese students turning Mazda CX-5 into Dakar Rally-ready off-roader

Mon, Dec 30 2019

Students at Japan's Nihon Automobile College (NATS) are transforming a first-generation Mazda CX-5 into a full-blown off-roader that looks ready to compete in the Dakar Rally. Named CX-Runner, the one-of-a-kind model will make its debut at the Tokyo Auto Salon opening its doors in January 2020. The Tokyo Auto Salon is the Japanese equivalent of the annual SEMA show, so anything goes under the bright lights. NATS students began the CX-Runner project with a used 2012 CX-5 and seemingly set out to leave as few original parts as possible. While the project isn't finished yet, a sketch released by the school suggests the crossover will receive wheel arch extensions, an external roll cage, a beefier suspension, and a shorter front bumper that increases the approach angle.  Photos published on the school's official Facebook page show the project is moving along nicely. The body extensions are made with a composite material that looks like Kevlar, and fitting the rear wheel arches required sealing the back doors, which is fine; the CX-Runner will be a two-seater. We don't know if students are planning to make changes to the CX-5's powertrain yet, but a thick skid plate will protect whatever is under the hood from expensive impacts with obstacles encountered off-road. nats-mazda-cx-runner-project-1 View 3 Photos The Tokyo Auto Salon will open its doors on January 10, so the students have time to finish the custom-made body kit, install the suspension, paint the CX-Runner, and fit the roll cage. They're not just doing this for fun, though. NATS began offering a customizing class in 1998, and building a tuner car is one of the requirements aspiring builders need to fulfill in order to graduate. With that in mind, it's no surprise that NATS will again have a big presence during the 2020 edition of the Tokyo Auto Salon. In addition to the CX-5 off-roader, its students are building six custom cars including a Nissan 370Z roadster wearing front and rear fascias sourced from a GT-R, a Toyota 2000GT-inspired convertible based on the Suzuki Cappuccino kei car from the 1990s, and a four-door, five-seater Toyota 86 built on Camry bones but powered by the coupe's flat-four engine. Road & Track to take Miata on million-mile march

Sat, 11 Jan 2014

Road & Track has taken on a Miata project. One hell of a project, if we're honest. You see, the Miata in question, a 1989 example in Mariner Blue, isn't a high-mileage Mazda that the publication intends to fix up, or make race-worthy, or try to flip or give away to a reader or something. No, it's a rather typical well-used NA, with a hefty 325,000 miles on the clock to-date that the staff plans on driving until the six-digit odo reads all zeros again. One million miles or bust (or both, most likely).
Procured for the bargain-basement price of $1,600, complete with seat covers that "really do look like muppet pelts" (according to Zach Bowman) and a bondo-filled love tap on the nose, the NA Miata actually looks like just the sort of fun-machine that a real driving enthusiast would pick up to get some cheap thrills in. The R&T team already has some interesting plans for the Miata, including a potential run up Pikes Peak and loaning it out to readers (or perhaps your author...). Click through to read all about it.
