I have a 1982 Mazda RX7 GS with a rarely seen carbureted 6 port induction 12A rotary engine. The car has 150k miles. The engine was installed in the mid 1990's as a in service replacement imported from Japan. This rare Mazda 6 port induction engine was never offered in the U.S.A. as a factory RX7 option. The mileage on the engine is unknown but my research from the past 2 owners (including the owner that installed the engine) reveals that it was not driven much since installation. There are no fluid leaks, does not smoke and has great compression, 130+ in both rotors. The average costs to overhaul a 12a rotary engine is around $3,000.00, much of a RX7's value is the condition of the engine and this one is in great shape. I have put about 2500 miles on this car with no major issues.

The known problems are the trip meter when reset will only run up to 10 miles and stops. The rear window defroster does not work, the tabs on the glass for the electrical connections have come off. The A/C blows cool but could use a can of Freon (R12). The manual windows roll up and down ok but need a little help to align correctly when reaching the top. The center console lid hinge is broken, I leave the lid off and use the open space for drinks etc since the car has no factory cup holders. The (outer) door window seals need to be replaced. The door seals are a bit rough but the car seals up well, I have noticed no water leaks to the interior during a hard rain. The dash has cracks in the area above the speedometer. The clutch may be getting a bit thin as it engages near the top of the travel and the car sometimes shutters when taking off from a stop but it shifts normally through all gears with no slippage. The seats are in good condition with a little tearing only on the side vinyl of the drivers seat. I have new black and red seat covers that are included with the sale. The car has a very nice aftermarket Alpine AM/FM/CD stereo. As you can see from the pictures the interior IMHO is in way above average condition for a 32 year old car.

I have replaced both rear wheel brake cylinders, installed new idler arm bushings and a new windshield. Performed tune up with new plugs, wires, cap & rotor. With the exception of the clutch issues the car starts easily & runs and drives great, the transmission (synchros) and rear end run smooth and quiet. The body has a few bumps and bruises with a few spots of light surface rust,  nothing serious or structural.  The left rear quarter panel needs some finish detail work before painting. Please review all the pictures in detail as they are part of the description.

This car is not a pristine museum piece but all things considered has been a nice daily driver for me.   If you are serious about getting a good 1st generation RX7 daily driver then you must take a close look at this one.  Please email with any questions.  The reason I am selling is that I have too many cars, about a dozen total and 6 are RX7's.  Others I may be selling in the future are a 1985 GSL-SE with 82K original miles,  a 1983 S car with some GS options and 123k original miles and last but not least a near perfect time capsule 1983 GSL survivor car with only 45k original miles that has been stored indoors all it's life with only 2 owners, I am the 2nd.  Thanks for looking and hope to find this car a good new home soon.

Please take a good look and ask all questions as the sale will be final.

Mazda 16X rotary engine two years away, will arrive in all-new model

Fri, 16 Aug 2013

We last reported on Mazda's next-generation rotary engine project in June of 2012 when the automaker built its last Renesis-powered RX-8, but rumors of this new engine's development had been around way before that final car left the production line in Japan, last year.
We now have enthusiastic confirmation that this next-gen rotary engine is really and truly going forward. It is still referred to as 16X and has several priorities. First is to lower fuel consumption compared to the RX-8's engine, while still making gains in terms of performance. The second is to reduce the burning of oil that was happening at the highest revs. And the third and final priority, and perhaps most key for enthusiasts, is to give the powertrain a big torque upgrade.
What we were told by a Mazda USA insider (while we are all here together at the festivities in Monterey) is that the first application of the new 16X engine will be happening in two years' time in an as yet undisclosed new model. Oh, the mind races to our eternal Mazda wish list...

LA Design Challenge invokes biology for 2025 concepts [w/poll]

Wed, 13 Nov 2013

Participants in the annual LA Design Challenge always manage to come up with edgy, wacky designs for future vehicles, but with a theme of "Biomimicry and Mobility: 2025" this year's crop of cars might be the quirkiest we've ever seen. As usual, automotive designers from around the world participated in this year's competition, and all the designs will all be unveiled next week during the LA Auto Show with a winner being announced on November 21.
Chinese automakers made a strong showing with Qoros, SAIC Motor, JAC Motors (the company responsible for the Ford F-150 clone) and Changfeng all bringing interesting takes on the biology, human intelligence and sustainability theme. One of the more innovative ideas among these automakers is the Qoros Silk Road System allows autonomous vehicles to drive in packs similar to how ants travel. Speaking of ants, the SAIC Motor Mobiliant (shown above) gets its design from the shape of an ant's body, and, like the insect, it can climb building acting as a personal elevator as well. The JAC Motors design also merges vehicle and building design, while the Changfeng LaBrea inspired by the design of muscle fibers.
Other entrants include Subaru and US-based design teams for BMW, Toyota and Mazda. BMW's duo of concepts mimic plant and animal life. The LA Subways concept acts as a submersible, single-person vehicle to take advantage of the LA river, with a shape similar to an Ocean Sunfish. The Sustainable Efficient Exploratory Device (SEED) imitates the shape of a seed pod, and uses propulsion methods inspired by a shark, dragonfly and a water bug. Mazda's Auto Adapt might be the most car-like concept of the bunch, while the Subaru Suba-Roo and the Calty-designed, Toyota e-grus are the most mind-blowingly awesome.

Mazda on sales upswing in Europe but won't build there

Sat, 20 Jul 2013

Auto sales in Europe have been a tricky proposition for some years, but Mazda has seen some success on the backs of the CX-5 and new Mazda6. According to a report form Automotive News Europe, though, that doesn't mean we should be looking for the Japanese manufacturer to set up production operations there.
Mazda's European CEO, Jeff Guyton, explained to AN that "Our intention is to have manufacturing scale. That gives you scale economy and quality through repeatability." In other words, a big honking plant in one part of the world is preferable to a half dozen small factories building the same vehicles.
European sales for Mazda are up 5.4 percent in the first half of 2013, with 74,000 units sold. That kicked the Zoom-Zoom brand's market share up from one to 1.2 percent. Small gains, but gains nonetheless. According to Guyton, Mazda would need to sell 200,000 units of just one model in Europe for local production to make sense. Mazda's best European year saw 320,000 units sold across the entire range.
