For sale is a 1999 Mazda Protege ES (1.8L 4-Cyl engine) with manual transmission. Overall it is in fair condition.

The bad: The body has some rust (primarily around rear wheel wells) and couple small dents and scratches. The passenger sideview mirror can't be adjusted. The engine leaks some oil (which then falls onto a hot part of the engine and gets burnt up and kinda smells). The check engine light is on. There is a rattling noise when you go over bumps. The clutch slips at high rpms.

The good: The car has low miles for a 15 yr old car. The engine runs well. The car drives well. Within the past few years the exhaust has been replaced, the starter has been replaced, the clutch has been replaced (though has some slippage issues), the transmission was replaced with a used transmission, and the battery is just a few months old. There have been other minor repairs but I don't remember what was fixed.

This car is good for getting around town. I wouldn't recommend taking any long road trips with it though unless you get some work done on it, like getting the clutch fixed. It would make a good first car for someone or for someone to use until they can save up to get a better car.

I have owned the car since 2010, I bought it used from a Honda dealership in Syracuse, NY. I am currently located in Champaign, IL. The title for the car is clean but is from NY state so keep in mind that when you purchase it you will have to transfer the title to IL.

The Kelly Blue Book value is $1,353. I am asking for $1,200.

Mazda CEO says rotary not viable, so don't look for a new one

We have some very sad news to report, rotor-heads fans: Don't expect a new rotary-powered vehicle anytime soon. This comes straight from Masamichi Kogai, the CEO of Mazda, which is the only company to ever market a commercially successful rotary-powered automobile in the world. The issue, as it has pretty much always been, is environmental.
While the Wankel rotary engine does indeed make a lot of power in a small, lightweight package, it does so while burning lots of fuel and emitting lots of noxious gases into the atmosphere, at least when running on gasoline. And that means the rotary engine will likely only ever be able to power niche vehicles. And that, in turn, means that it is very difficult to turn a profit on vehicles with rotary engines, particularly for a small automaker like Mazda.
"It has to be a viable commercial proposition. If we are going to adopt it, it has to be a product that can generate at least sales of 100,000 units a year. We have to be able to achieve a profit," said Kogai in an interview with Automotive News. Mazda sold 56,203 RX-7 models in the United States (the automaker's biggest market) in 1986. Sales of the RX-8 peaked in 2004, its first full year on the market, with just 23,690 units.

Fiat 124 caught entirely undisguised

Dear automakers, please continue making these kind of mistakes. Thanks to what we're guessing is some lax security, the all-new, Mazda MX-5 Miata-based Fiat 124 was spotted taking part in a photo shoot near Santa Barbara, CA. The images show what we'd consider a fairly simple rebadging job. The 124 gets new front and rear clips that not only harken back to the original 124 (not to mention other Fiat roadsters, like the Barchetta), but also serves to distance this droptop from the rest of the company's US range. The similarities between the 124 and the car it's based on are even more obvious in the cabin. This is an MX-5 interior with Fiat's big, red badge on the tiller. That means the same quality materials and knob-dial infotainment system that have been so well received in the Miata. It's under the hood, though, where the Fiat really differs from its Japanese cousin. According to our spy, the vehicle shown here features some kind of two-pedal setup – probably the six-speed Euro twin-clutch used in the 500L and Dodge Dart. Don't worry, though, a six-speed stick will also be on offer. Regardless of transmission, we can expect a 180-horsepower version of the 1.4-liter, turbocharged, four-cylinder offered in the 500 Abarth. And if that's not enough good news, a dedicated Abarth model will likely arrive after launch, which our spies claim will use the 1.75-liter turbo and DCT from the Alfa Romeo 4C. While this represents a good look at the new 124, we'll probably be waiting until the LA Auto Show in November for the official look. Stay tuned.
