2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata first in-car observations

Sun, 07 Sep 2014

We've had few days to digest the all-new 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata since the roadster was first revealed on Wednesday evening when we offered you our first impressions. Since that time, we've gone back and looked at the car a number of times in person here in California, and we've even seen it briefly run under its own power (okay, it was more of a saunter). What we didn't get the chance to do at the reveal, however, was sit inside the car. We've since been able to remedy that, and while we haven't been allowed to drive the new roadster, we do have some initial in-car impressions to share with you.
First, the location and feel of the major controls is quite excellent. The three-spoke steering wheel is an MX-5 specific item - it's not shared with any other Mazda. That's vital, because others would likely be too big in diameter or have the wrong rim thickness. The wheel's redundant controls seem to be well laid out and the airbag boss is very small. The column tilts, but unfortunately and somewhat inexplicably, it still doesn't telescope.
Pedals are well-spaced, and the six-speed manual has the same short throws and positive engagement that we've come to know and love.

2018 Mazda6 Wagon: Beautiful but forbidden

Tue, Mar 6 2018

Mazda has finally revealed the updated Mazda6 wagon it announced a few weeks ago. It's just as beautiful as we expected. The exterior features most of the same updates as the sedan version. They include a grille with more depth and dimension, a cleaner lower fascia, and headlights that are more integrated with the grille. Inside, the dashboard has been revised to look less cluttered, and the high-end leather and suede trimmings of the Signature trim are available. View 12 Photos Of course, the 2018 Mazda6 wagon still won't be available in America. And that's particularly disappointing, especially for this author, because the car looks so great. But we do understand the reasons why. Nobody buys wagons, at least without plastic body cladding on them. Plus, Mazda already offers the CX-5 here in the United States, and it serves effectively the same purpose, but in a much more popular crossover package. Seriously, the CX-5 is Mazda's best-seller over the last two months, selling more than twice as many as the next best-seller, the Mazda3. But there's still a silver lining to our lack of a wagon. You see, a close examination reveals that while the European Mazda6 sedan and wagon get most of the same updates as those in the American market, they won't get the 250-horsepower, 310 pound-feet of torque-producing turbocharged 2.5-liter gasoline engine we're getting. And given a choice, we would probably prefer more power than a wagon variant. The most potent engine over in Europe will remain the diesel 2.2-liter engine making 181 horsepower and 328 pound-feet of torque. Related Video: This content is hosted by a third party. Crossovers help Mazda post its best January sales in 24 years

Mon, Feb 5 2018

Mazda's 2017 ended on a bit of a flat note. It wrapped up the year with 2.8 percent fewer U.S. sales than 2016, and 8 of the 12 months lower month-over-month. But 2018 is off to a much brighter start with the company having its best January sales month since 1994, with just under 25,000 cars sold. Besides that headline statistic, the higher sales also mean this January exceeded 2017's sales by 15 percent or about 3,300 cars and put it ahead of January in that healthy 2016 year. Compared with this past December, though, sales are down about 2,000 cars. The gains are entirely due to the success of Mazda's crossover SUVs. The CX-5 was the best of the best with a month-over-month gain of over 66 percent. In actual numbers it sold about 13,500 copies compared with about 8,000 last January. The big three-row CX-9 had a big jump going from 1,600 units sold last January to about 2,300 for a gain of almost 47 percent. Even the little CX-3 saw a small gain between the two Januarys, going from about 1,200 to 1,350 sales. View 14 Photos Mazda's January would've been even better if its conventional cars hadn't dropped so much. Both Mazda Miata and Mazda6 sales dropped by just over half. The Mazda dropped from 3,300 sales to just under 1,600, and the Miata dropped from a little over 900 to a little over 400. Mazda3 held on a little better with just a 12 percent drop from last January going from about 6,600 to 5,800 sales. The lopsidedness of these sales isn't all that surprising. Crossovers have been a boon to loads of manufacturers. For example, Mitsubishi had an 2017 full of sales improvements, with the company finally breaking 100,000 units for the first time in years, and it was all because of improving crossover sales. January's sales also continue an unfortunate downward trend for Mazda's cars, with both the Mazda6 and Mazda3 having month-over-month declines every single month since February. It will be interesting to see if the new turbocharged engine option on the Mazda6 will improve sales of the sedan later this year. Related Video: This content is hosted by a third party.
