2006 - Lotus Exige on 2040-cars
San Luis Obispo, California, United States
Model Overview The Lotus Exige was introduced in 2006 as a hard-top version of Elise. It carries many of the best features of the Elise, such as the all-aluminum chassis, and the feather-light design. Weighing in at 2,077 lbs, the Exige is one of the lightest closed cars available. Besides fixing the roof, Lotus stiffened the suspension and made subtle changes to the sheet metal. The Exige features a unique engine cover and rear wing, as well as a front fascia that helps provide additional downforce over the Elise. For 2007, Lotus wanted to improve engine performance, so they added a supercharger to the 1.8L Toyota-sourced engine. This boosted output to 220 horsepower and torque to 165 ft-lbs, all while increasing efficiency to 23 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. But what has not changed is how dedicated Lotus is to making the Exige the ultimate driver's car. The seats are specially shaped to embrace the driver, but the thin padding means that every nuance of the road is transmitted to his or her hips. The car sits extraordinarily low at 45 inches tall. The steering is not power-assisted, but the ratio is quick and communication with the road is razor sharp. The only transmission available is a six-speed manual. The Lotus also features only four cubic feet of cargo space--1.3 cubic feet less than a Mazda MX-5.But that's the cost of the Exige's blistering performance. Lotus claims a zero to sixty time of 4.1 seconds. The Exige's mid-engine design, racing-style anti-lock brakes, and Eibach/Bilstein suspension mean this is a serious sports car. Lotus didn't want to dilute the essence of the car, but they did spare a few popular comfort items. Among them, air conditioning, remote keyless entry, leather seats with leather inserts, and a Blaupunkt CD player. The Exige is available in several configurations to suit the ways different people intend to use it. The Touring Package adds full leather seats, power windows, and sound insulation. Description of Car Here is an absolutely beautiful 2006 Lotus Exige S that is in excellent condition and an absolute blast to drive. This particular car was loaded from the factory with every option, White paint, Touring Package with leather seats and an overall more comfortable interior and an i-pod hook up. Additionally this car was prepared with a Carbon Fiber Splitter, Schroth ASM Racing Harnesses, Light Weight Battery, Custom Engine Tune and Katana II supercharger means this engine is making 255 hp! Also fitted is a Larini Sport Exhaust, Ferodo Street / Track brakes, rigid engine mounts, “bollock” shift knob, Toyo R888 tires, DBW Pedals. This car performs flawlessly and makes for an excellent affordable track car that can be driven to and from the track! With the weight reductions and the supercharger, this car is making 260 hp per ton; compare that with a NEW Porsche 911 that only makes 230 hp per ton. You decide how this translates into driving fun. This car is fully street legal with current California smog!!! There are not many track day toys that can be as reliable as a Toyota, with the performance of a super car. Most of the original factory Lotus parts are available with the car. These truly are excellent cars and are very rare with less than 300 imported to the US. This is an accident free car that is ready to be driven and enjoyed. This is a great value and these cars will undoubtedly be sought after as collectible cars in the future!!! This car earns lots of thumbs up everywhere you go and is a pleasure to drive. It would make a great addition to any collection or a weekend showpiece. Lotus Evija's wild aero setup is detailed by chief aerodynamicist
Tue, May 12 2020The Lotus Evija is a car of firsts for Lotus. To that end, the company has spent a lot of time talking over the details. Today, we get to learn about the wild shapes aerodynamics and what Lotus engineers were trying to accomplish. Richard Hill, chief aerodynamicist for Lotus takes a dive into all the details, and the video at the top of this post offers a great visual. Most cars have to punch a hole in the air, to get through using brute force, but the Evija is unique because of its porosity, Hill says. The car literally breathes the air. The front acts like a mouth; it ingests the air, sucks every kilogram of value from it in this case, the downforce then exhales it through that dramatic rear end. We can see what Hill means as we look at the Evija in photos. Instead of a regular front bumper, this one has pass-throughs that direct the air back into the side of the car. Lotus hasnt released the all-important coefficient of drag figure yet, but we have to imagine its very low. The front splitter (below, left) is responsible for a few different things. The opening in the center takes in air to cool the battery pack that is mounted behind the seats. Then, the outer section of the splitter channels the air to the e-axle for cooling of the electrical components. And finally, it also produces downforce. There are a couple more tunnels for air to pass through in the rear. These holes are likely the most distinctive design feature, especially when accentuated with the LED taillights. Hill says that these are also fully functional and help to reduce drag. They feed the wake rearward to help cut drag, Hill says. Think of it this way; without them the Evija would be like a parachute but with them its a butterfly net, and they make the car unique in the hypercar world. On top of all these porous body structures, there are pieces that move. The rear wing can elevate upward from its flush body position and deploy into clean air above, creating more downforce. And then theres an F1-style drag reduction system. This uses a horizontal plane that deploys from the car to make it slipperier through air. The final big piece of this puzzle is the underbody sculpting that directs air into the massive rear diffuser. This causes an upwash of air, in turn creating a massive amount of downforce. Hill sums it up quite nicely.
Renault settles on Lotus, to take 65-percent stake in F1 team
Sat, Aug 29 2015Renault's coquettish moves toward becoming a constructor again have been news all season. The expected maneuver, should Renault say "Oui" to such, was for the French carmaker to repurchase the Lotus team - the team it sold at the end of 2010 to Genii Capital. Then last week we got the surprise news that Renault had been talking to Force India about taking a majority stake, but that information came with the context that Renault had discussions with several teams about such a move. Autosport reports that Renault has finally decided to get back together with Lotus, taking a stake worth up to 65 percent for 65 million pounds. The deciding factor was said to be the facilities that Lotus has available compared to Force India, including the Enstone factory formerly owned by Renault, plus a computational fluid dynamics program, driver-in-the-loop simulator, and a 60-percent-scale wind tunnel. The final shareholding stake will be split between Gerard Lopez at 25 percent and Renault ambassador Alain Prost at 10 percent. Renault will make a 7.5-million-pound payment immediately, completing the acquisition by paying 5.75-million-pounds per year for the next ten years. On top of that, Renault will invest a budget commensurate with those of Mercedes-AMG Petronas and Infiniti Red Bull Racing. The carmaker's board and CEO Carlos Ghosn have approved the deal, it is up to Lotus shareholders to agree to everything by Monday, when Autosport says the papers will be signed. The deal puts team drivers and the Red Bull engine supply in question. It should be expected for Romain Grosjean to remain, but keeping Pastor Maldonado is not a certainty. As for engines, Red Bull's engine supply contract states it must be Renault's priority, so Renault could stick with the Mercedes power unit Lotus currently uses for one more year, or help Red Bull get in bed with Mercedes. We should know more next week. Related Video:
The Caterham Seven Sprint is a perfect retro-style British roadster
Mon, Sep 12 2016A Caterham Seven oozes retro style. Modern engineering may mean the car no longer shares any parts with its original Lotus counterpart, but one look at the little roadster and it's easy to see the car's heritage. Caterham loves pumping out variants of the Seven, and the 2016 Goodwood Revival seemed like the perfect place to announce the latest version, the throwback Caterham Seven Sprint. Caterham calls the Seven Sprint a design "that was seemingly planned in the mid-1960s but never launched." It's apt then that the company is using it to kick off its "60 Years of the Seven" celebrations. The Seven Sprint is based off the European-only 160 model, meaning it's powered by an 80-hp turbocharged three-cylinder Suzuki engine. While the bonkers Seven 620 R may be the biggest and baddest Caterham available, the bare bones Seven 160 just feels more appropriate here. There are a number of retro styling touches throughout the car. The limited edition Seven Sprint comes wrapped in one of six colors originally offered by Lotus in 1966 and 1967. The Chassis is powder-coated grey, just like the Series 2 Lotus Seven. The cream-colored wheels feature polished hubcaps, while the interior features a wood-trimmed wheel and the interior is trimmed in a wonderful shade of red. The body has been slightly reworked to look more like the original Lotus designed car. Mechanically, not much has changed. Power from the Suzuki three is fed through a five-speed manual. Some of the suspension bits are similar to Colin Chapman's original design, but that's true of the standard 160. The car should be just as much of a riot as any other Caterham, just packed to the gills with style. The Seven Sprint is available only as a fully-complete factory car. It's unknown if any of the 60 produced will make it to the US. Prices in the UK start at GBP27,995, or about $37,000.
