1988 Lotus Esprit Turbo - 40th Anniversary #71 of 88 made. 2.2 Turbo

I purchased this car with the intention of bringing the car back to 100% but recent financial difficulties have changed my priorities.  The car was last inspected and on the road in 2007 and has been garaged kept since.

The body and paint are 98% perfect and almost flawless.  There are some scuff marks under the front faring but only noticeable from under the car.  One headlight motor is not working.  I have a cross reference for a new one.  I have not looked at it so it may be something simple.

The interior is about 80%.  Is missing the horn button and the emergency brake and fuel door releases need to be repaired.  It also looks like the trim under the column is missing.  There is one small tear where you would rest your elbow.  Someone stole the amplifier out from under the bonnet so there are some loose wires there and the radio does not power up.  It has a hard wired front and rear radar detector but its probably out dated.

The engine compartment is beautiful and clean.  From my estimation this engine has had to be out of the car.  I have looked at about a dozen of these cars and none were this clean.  It is missing one carpet piece on the boot floor and the cover for the Relays.  These are simple to replicate.  The engine had not been started in a few years.  I took the time to properly lube the cylinders and cam shafts.  I rotated the engine by hand, changed the oil and primed the oil pump prior to starting the car.  I also drained both tanks and remarkably the fuel was not too bad.  It fired right up and there was no visible smoke whatsoever.  Upon the first test drive the turbo over-boosted and the engine management system quickly retarded the engine properly.  I pulled it back in and removed the turbo waste gate.  It was frozen and the diaphragm was torn.  I found a used one and rebuilt it, reground the valve seat and reinstalled it.  The car now runs and boosts properly.   WOW what a thrill to drive.  The transmission shifts properly through all of the gears.  The vacuum pump is making racket and the brakes are stiff so it will need to be replaced.  I have the NAPA part number so no worries about finding one.

I carefully inspected the timing belt and it appeared to be good but recommend replacing prior to putting on the racetrack.  It appeared that the prior owner took exceptionally good care of this car.  It looks like they have replaced many of the water hoses with silicone hoses.  I think it has an aftermarket muffler I think it is an "Offenhauser"???

The tires look like new but clearly are at least 6 years old so your call on them.  I would love to finish this car but am a single dad and just need my money back out of it.  Feel free to call me to discuss any other details. 703-898-7511  I have listed everything I can remember about the car.

I have this for sale through many other publications so if it may sell there first.  I am sorry if this happens.  2 people have come and looked at it and both were over 6' 1" tall.  They did not fit!  If you are over 6' tall you might want to reconsider unless you are going to drive with the Glass roof removed.

Please no scams.  I will need cash or a cashiers check. The bank cashiers check will need to be verified prior to releasing the car or title.  No exceptions.  I have been through the fake check thing before and wont do that again.  I would also ask that for 2 checks for any amount over $10,000 so there wont be a long waiting time for them to clear.  Thank you for understanding this prior to buying.

This is how ground effects work in a nutshell

Wed, Mar 30 2016

There are two ways to generate downforce. One is with all manner of wings and spoilers on the surface of the vehicle. The other is with ground effects. One you can clearly see, the other remains something of a hidden mystery. Fortunately, the good folks at Lotus and Goodwood are here to dumb it down for us non-engineer types. It's called Bernoulli's Principle, named after Swiss physicist Daniel Bernoulli who literally wrote the book on the subject way back in the 1700s. Countless engineers have spent their careers focused on its study and application, but the crux of the matter is that, as the speed of air (or other "fluid") increases, pressure decreases. Play with the air's increasing speed and decreasing pressure just right and you can generate downforce underneath the body of a car without significantly increasing drag as you would with surface spoilers. For evidence of how Bernoulli's Principle applies in practical terms, just look at the last Ferrari to pack a turbocharged V8 in the middle and the latest one. The F40 had a giant wing on the back, where the 488 GTB has none. But because the 488 uses underbody aerodynamics (or "ground effects"), it generates significantly more downforce than the winged F40 ever could, and at lower speeds. Ferrari, however, was not the first outfit to harness the power of ground effects. Lotus did with the legendary 79 that Mario Andretti drove to the world championship back in 1978. That was the genius of Colin Chapman, and to explain how it all works in layman's terms, our friends over at Goodwood Road & Racing brought in Colin's son Clive Chapman, head of Classic Team Lotus, to put together the video above. Aston Martin and Lotus each issue recalls

Sun, 14 Oct 2012

A pair of head-turning high performance cars are catching some attention off a different kind, in the form of safety recalls. Aston Martin and Lotus have issued recalls for the V12 Vantage Coupe and Evora, respectively.
Aston Martin's affects 169 examples of the 2009-2012 V12 Vantage Coupe. It concerns the tire-pressure monitoring system, and is less a malfunction than it is a compliance issue. The TPMS does not alert the driver until the front tire is more than 25 percent below the recommended cold tire pressure. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 138 states that the alarm must sound when tire pressure is "equal to or less than either the pressure 25 percent below" the recommended cold inflation pressure. To address the issue, Aston Martin will notify owners and reprogram the software, free of charge.
As for Lotus, 80 supercharged Evoras have been recalled, all built between February and September, 2011. The problem involves an engine-mounted oil feed pipe, which could rupture, causing loss of engine oil or a possible fire if the oil sprays onto a hot engine.

Miami real estate investor selling world's largest collection of Bond cars

Tue, Feb 25 2014

In 2011 Miami real estate investor Michael Dezer bought dozens of cars used in the James Bond films from the Bond Museum in Keswick, England. Since then, he's added to the trove which now stands at 59 cars, as well as motorcycles, boats, jetskis, tanks and thousands of photos, posters and memorabilia. It is the largest collection of 007 cars in the world, and Dezer has put it up for sale for 20 million pounds ($33.25M US) - the caveat is that you have to buy the entire collection. But what a collection it is. Among the six Aston Martins are the DB5 from Goldeneye, the Vanquish from Die Another Day and both V8s from The Living Daylights. There is also the Lotus Esprit from The Spy Who Loved Me - not the Esprit submarine that Elon Musk bought last year at auction, but the pre-dive roadgoing car. The new owner of the collection will keep things up to date with the Audi A5 and the Land Rover Defender 110 from the opening scene of Skyfall, and properly varied with the dragon tank from Dr. No, the Fairey Huntress yacht in From Russia with Love, and the chopped-in-half Renault 11 from A View to a Kill. An agency in the UK is handling the sale. We will now leave you to handle the money transfer from your people in Liechtenstein.
