I purchased this vehicle in Chicago from a dealer who had it for sale for about 30 mins.  When i purchased it it had a CEL for emissions.  I drove it across country to SoCal where construction of this project would take place.

I replaced everything related to emissions and smog with new parts, i removed the intake and cleaned all the carbon, replaced the gaskets and most of the vacuum hoses and the intermediary intake tube between the air filter canister and the throttle body because it was split and sucking in dirty air.  I replaced the cat and O2 sensors and had the exhaust completely replaced using a magnaflow muffler.  once the vehicle ran well and passed the stringent smog test here in CA., i set about to building the LX up to the standards of going anywhere and having a good time while doing it.

Having been in business building off road vehicles for the last 30 years you can rest assured no shortcuts were taken.

  1. The front bumper is 1.75" .120 wall tubing and houses a smittybuilt 8K winch, the bumper is bolted to the frame so it can be removed for service.
  2. There are 11 forward facing lights on the LX
  3. the suspension was done in house and has a 3.5" OME lift (medium spring rate) with OME shocks (it rides beautifully)
  4. The rear bumper with dual swing-a-ways house the full size spare, hi-lift and the kolpin fuel cans and maxtrax
  5. there are two LED rear facing lights that go on in reverse and have a bypass switch to aid on setting up camp or trailside repairs
  6. there is a $900 rearview mirror with backup camera built into it.  the camera is mounted to aid in backing up and hitching a trailer alone.
  7. the rear bumper has an additional pair of LED stop/turn/tail lights because the tire partially obscures the factory tail lights.
  8. the fuel carrier has a "euro" light in it, when the lights are turned on the red light stays on at all times (it is very bright)
  9. The LX has a set of bestop power boards which we custom fabricated mounts for so when a door is opened full length steps drop down to aid in entry
  10. the quad headlights have been converted to HID
  11. PHH done 1K miles ago
  12. I replaced the factory head unit so you can listen to a cd or any USB input device
  13. the driver seat leather is so-so
  14. the rest of the leather is in great shape
  15. the third row seats look BRAND NEW
  16. i installed a 1,000 wat inverter under the drivers seat
  17. the custom made roof basket can carry over 1,000 lbs.  it is built from .095 tubing and fully welded (it is painted not powder coated) it needs a touch up
  18. all lights are on relays
  19. the 33" ProComp AT's are new and have roughly 3K miles on them.  the wheels are factory FJ Cruiser and have been painted with outdoor furniture texture paint to match the factory paint (the lower plastic on the vehicle has also been painted with it).  it has been on wheels and vehicle for 3 years, it looks great but could use a touchup.
  20. all decals can be removed
  21. i had the windows tinted
  22. there is a cobra all in one CB radio
  23. there are husky liner floor mats in the front and rear not the very rear.
  24. there is damage to the carpet in the very rear, it looks like someone transported a battery and acid got on the carpet.
  25. the paint is great shape for its age and while there are no dents there are various scratches indicative of a 16 year old off road SUV
  26. It has a safari snorkel and a K&N filter in the housing
  27. it has a scangauge that monitors fuel mileage, temps and gives an accurate speed
  28. on the freeway at 70MPH it gets 13-17MPG
  29. it has been on every trail in SoCal rated 5 or harder and does it with ease (pulling a trailer)
  30. I will miss this vehicle
I am selling this because i am going to use the money for a new business venture, there is nothing wrong with it that i know of.  Last week it stopped running so i had to replace the fuel pump (lovely job).

I have a gallery online with over 200 photos of this vehicle.  if you would like to see more photos please email me and i will send the link.  finishlinewestinc at gmail dot com

2013 Lexus IS F

Mon, 25 Mar 2013

Sometimes fortune really smiles on even shiftless car-reviewing Dutchmen like myself, I must admit. I had come into Austin, TX the week before I was supposed to meet up with the good people at Lexus, who had graciously invited me to drive the 2014 IS. I flew in early because Austin is a pretty good place to eat, as well as being a place that my wife doesn't live. Let me say that a nicer way... while my stunningly attractive wife pretty much represents all things good and light in this world, she does occasionally shoot me a sideways glance when I dig in for my fifth Tacodeli breakfast taco. Thankfully, I leave most of my good sense and information about the effects of high-calorie diets on lifespan at home with Molly when I come to Texas, so I can better focus my laser-like attention on car reviews and TexMex. You guys are worth it.
Aside from all the tacos, I was also lucky to be visiting town the weekend before South By Southwest really kicked off in earnest, because it was that Sunday that my good old buddy John, and my new old buddy Pat, were headed up to the Circuit of the Americas to see the first ever SCCA Majors event there. It was lucky that I had planned to be out at CotA, which is east of Austin, because that made it very slightly easier for a very nice woman named Marcia to bring me a 2013 Lexus IS F from Houston, roughly 150 miles away.
Marcia brought me the IS F to replace another press car, which was having mechanical troubles; I didn't ask for the fire-breathing IS but when it was offered up I figured I couldn't do much better as a warm up for the 2014 IS program I was about to go on. See, lucky right?

Lexus planning a hydrogen fuel-cell LS by 2017

Sun, Jan 4 2015

Toyota's Fuel Cell System will certainly migrate to other vehicles in the carmaker's lineup, but Australian car site Motoring reports that one of the models at the head of the queue is the Lexus LS. According to its sources, the executive barge powered by hydrogen will be released by 2017 and take the top spot in the range, rolling in above the LS Hybrid. We're told that Toyota engineers will find a way to slide two hydrogen tanks into its bodywork with the same general setup as on the Mirai – one under the rear seats and another under the rear parcel shelf. The 150-kW fuel cell stack will be placed under the front seats. Motoring says the resulting sedan and its 220-kW electric motor would come in "at around 2,100 kg," which is 4,620 pounds; that's a ginormous 539 pounds less than the listed curb weight of the current LS Hybrid, and 387 pounds more than the standard LS. Assuming all goes as planned, it would have a range of roughly 238 miles, a few dozens less than the Mirai's range of about 300 miles. It would look slightly different, too, the front end getting larger intakes to cool the power unit. It wouldn't surprise us if Lexus does have a hydrogen LS planned – it would be a statement car, and the company likes making statements, even if few heed them; it has stuck with its LS 600h for the past seven years, yet of the 7,539 LS models sold through the end of November this year, only 61 of them were hybrids. The timing would be intriguing, however; by the time the LS hybrid came out, Lexus had already worked over its filet-and-potatoes models. And if the hydrogen version is going to come in above the $120,440 hybrid, well, that will be a statement indeed.

US buyers show little interest in big hybrids

Sat, May 10 2014

The idea of producing large, luxury-vehicle hybrids is turning into a "what were they thinking?" exercise in futility, USA Today reports. General Motors is discontinuing hybrid versions of the Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon SUVs, while Mercedes-Benz and Toyota's Lexus division are doing the same with their S-Class hybrid and LS hybrid sedans, respectively. The culprit? Big price increases for fuel economy improvements that border on the unimpressive. Granted, the Escalade hybrid gets 31 percent better fuel economy than the standard version, but that still maps out to a combined fuel-efficiency rating of just 21 miles per gallon. That can be seen as a worthwhile increase, if it didn't cost over $8,000 extra. The 2014 Escalade Hybrid, for example, starts at $74,425 while the non-hybrid can be had for $66,295. Meanwhile, the Lexus full-size hybrid costs $6,000 more than the regular version but only gets 1-2 mpg better combined fuel economy. The result of all these high costs? Low sales. Through April, GM sold 82 of its hybrid SUVs and pickups, down from 541 a year earlier. And the LS hybrid sales were in single-digit territory for April. That isn't stopping Lexus from promoting its hybrids as the right solution (with the wrong facts), though. There are still automakers giving big hybrid vehicles a shot, though. Nissan's Infiniti division is selling a hybrid version of its QX60 and says an impressive 10 percent of QX60 buyers choose the hybrid, which costs just $3,000 more. Looks like money talks.
