LAPD now on patrol with its own Lamborghini Gallardo
Mon, 17 Mar 2014Last year, the Dubai Police made news by purchasing a string of supercars to act as patrol vehicles around the city. Apparently, a generous family in Los Angeles thought that the LAPD needed to keep up with the Joneses, because they recently donated use of their Lamborghini Gallardo. Unfortunately, you won't be seeing the Italian coupe in any high-speed chases, as it's being used exclusively for display at charity events.
The Lamborghini has arrived courtesy of Nathalie and Travis Marg, proprietors of telecommunications contractor Light Source 1 Inc. They approached the force with the idea to use the supercar because "they admire what the LAPD does for the community," said LAPD Sergeant Frank Preciado to Autoblog. Galpin Auto Sports was tapped for the custom wrap to make it look like a police car, and according to Sgt. Preciado, the police force can use the car indefinitely. Importantly, the LAPD says no tax dollars have been expended on this vehicle.
The LAPD Gallardo will be on display to the public at Los Angeles County Air Show on March 21-22, and Sgt. Preciado said the police have already received many inquiries to display the car at other events. The police have even set up dedicated Twitter and Instagram accounts to promote its newest addition. Too bad it won't be catching speeders anytime soon.
Lamborghini Urus production body revealed in spy shots
Fri, Feb 10 2017After years of concepts and teasers, we finally have a our first look at the production version of the upcoming Lamborghini Urus. While these spy shots don't feature much variety, they do give us a fairly decent look at the front and side of the new model. Although there appear to be a number of changes from the concepts, it's still undeniably a Lamborghini. The Urus appears to wear the new Lamborghini face, similar to that of the updated 2017 Lamborghini Aventador S. The shape is generally the same as the concept, but it's been tamed and pulled back slightly. The intakes in the bottom corners are far smaller than the concept, and the entire front appears far more blunt and upright. The headlights look about the same, but it's hard to tell for sure through all of the camouflage. Around the side we can see that the wheel arches, though smaller, are generally the same shape as the concept. The crease in the door is still present, but far less aggressive. The mirrors are totally different than the miniscule ones fitted to the concept. The bold, sloping BMW X6-esque roofline looks nearly identical, though the production car has been fitted with roof rails. Unfortunately, we don't have any pictures of the rear to tell how aggressive that roofline really is. Earlier this week, Lamborghini confirmed full production will start in April. That means we should see a final production version fairly soon. Look for a twin-turbocharged V8 and an a plug-in hybrid system in the final version. This may not be as tough as the old Rambo Lambo, the LM002, but it still doesn't look like anything else on the road. Related Video: This content is hosted by a third party. Lamborghini shows off 2023 Huracan 60th Anniversary models at Fashion Week
Fri, Apr 28 2023As promised, Lamborghini pulled back the covers on its run of 60th anniversary Huracans. The three trims, Super Trofeo Omologata (STO), Tecnica, and EVO Spyder each come in two fashion-influenced colorways, and each will come in a run of 60 units for a total of 180 produced. The STO is inspired by sportwear and the athletic team kit. The first version comes in various shades of blue over black, the second version in gray over black. The Huracan Tecnica looks to motorsports liveries and the Italian flag, one variant in gray over black and red, the other in white with green stripes over black. The droptop EVO Spyder is a remix of the other two, available in either blue and white over black, or green with white strips over black. Of note, CEO Stephan Winkelmann said "The special editions of the Huracan not only celebrate the 60th anniversary of our brand, but also give our customers maybe the last chance to purchase an otherwise sold-out V10-powered Lamborghini." We think "maybe" is an important word in this sentence. The high-riding Sterrato only got 1,499 units that disappeared faster than wet cotton candy. The standard Huracan is sold out through 2024, as is everything else coming out the Sant'Agata Bolognese factory. Yet the Huracan successor isn't due until the end of 2024, according to a Road & Track report. Eighteen months that will include the afterglow of a huge birthday year is a long time to go without one-third of the lineup, especially at a company that loves — and succeeds so well at — special editions. As for that successor, about the only agreement among rumors is that the chassis be a modified version of the platform created for the flagship Revuelto. Car magazine says the hybrid V12's carbon-heavy "monofuselage" will be reworked with aluminum to lower the price. As recently as last November, some pubs said they expected Lamborghini to stick with a V10, Auto Express writing about Lamborghini technical officer Rouven Mohr saying, "[the new car is] not a range-oriented hybrid and there will be no kind of downsizing," the mag saying Mohr conveyed the sentiment "that itÂ’s against LamborghiniÂ’s philosophy to reduce the engine size and then 'compensate' with electrification as some rivals have done." A twin-turbo hybrid V8 has come up more recently, this engine being of Lamborghini's design. No longer having a corporate sibling in the Volkswagen Group stable to share V10 hybrid costs and upkeep with, a hybrid V8 makes much more sense.
