The exotic 2008 Lamborghini Gallardo sports car comes in two body styles, coupe and Spyder, with the new Superleggera as coupe only. With a 520-horsepower (530 horsepower on the Superleggera), 5.0L V10 engine powering less than 3,500 pounds, both body styles are among the fastest production vehicles on the market today. The Spyder can accelerate to 62 mph in only 4.3 seconds and can go 195 mph with the top up.The Gallardo's V10 engine, mounted over the rear wheels, follows a 90-degree design and has features such as variable valve timing and four valves per cylinder for optimum performance. Power is delivered through a standard six-speed manual or optional "e.gear" transmission--an electronically controlled sequential gearbox. The e.gear system comes with three modes: normal, which allows manual gear selection; sport, which makes faster yet sharper shifts; and automatic, for smoother shifts more like a conventional automatic.Traction for all that power is more assured than might be expected, thanks to the standard VT (viscous traction) all-wheel drive system, which at constant speed brings 70 percent of engine power to the rear wheels but varies the ratio for best traction and stability. A mechanical limited-slip differential is used in back, and an electronic one is used in front. The Gallardo comes from the factory ready for the track, with a power-steering cooler, Z-rated Pirelli tires, a performance driving mode for the stability control system, and powerful Brembo brakes with eight pistons in front. The braking system can pull 1.1 g on dry surfaces, according to Lamborghini.Dual-zone air conditioning, central locking, bi-xenon headlamps, and a six-CD sound system, are all on the standard-equipment list. Head and thorax side air bags are standard, too. Notable options include heated mirrors, a navigation system, a video rearview camera, a garage door opener, and an onboard computer. The Gallardo's design was heavily influenced by contemporary aircraft construction. The cockpit is far forward within the car, and the windshield is one of the most sharply raked in any vehicle. A rear spoiler, which automatically deploys at about 75 mph and retracts when speed lowers to about 55 mph, helps increase stability at high speeds by creating down force. The Spyder has a power-operated convertible soft top that can be fully opened or closed in about 20 seconds, along with a fully retractable glass window, which can serve as a wind deflector with the top open. And when the top is open, it stows within a special carbon-fiber engine hood. The Spyder's eye-catching and different design is enhanced by the absence of roll bars--pop-up safety bars are deployed when a rollover is anticipated.Lamborghini added a new coupe to the Gallardo lineup for 2008.

Lamborghini Gallardo successor to rock us like a Huracan?
Fri, 13 Dec 2013Lamborghini is expected to drop the sheet on its replacement for the Gallardo later this month (think of it as an automotive Festivus gift), which means that speculation on the new supercar's looks and performance is reaching a fever pitch. While the discussion centers on powertrains, though, we're overlooking something equally important - the car's name.
We've been operating under the impression that it would be named Cabrera, after the Detroit Tigers eight-time All-Star and Triple-Crown-winning first baseman a famous line a fighting bulls, as per Lamborghini tradition. Now comes word that Lambo might be moving away from the bovine nomenclature, based on a 2012 trademark filing for the name Huracan. (Of course, it's entirely possible that Lambo historians will dig up some dusty lineage on a fighting bull with a breezy name).
That's left some wondering if the collective auto industry has it wrong. As AutoExpress points out, though, the Huracan trademark was filed at the same time the Italian brand registered the "Urus" name for its SUV concept. During that filing, Lambo also registered the name "Deimos," so really, this should all be taken with a grain of salt.
Watch the Lamborghini Sesto Elemento used as a commuter car
Mon, Feb 15 2016Lamborghini never homologated the limited edition Sesto Elemento for the road, but this guy threw caution to the wind by taking the track-only sports coupe on the highway. He even recorded the high-speed blasts on video and had a Rolls-Royce along as a posh camera car. Lamborghini made just 20 examples of the Sesto Elemento, and they sold for 2 million euros each, which equaled $2.8 million at that time. The powertrain was the 570-horsepower V10 and all-wheel drive system from the Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggera, and Lambo made extensive use of carbon fiber for the special coupes, which cut the weight to just 2,200 pounds. The company claimed they could sprint to 62 miles per hour in only 2.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 198 mph. This driver was clearly very excited to show off the copious power from the limited edition Lamborghini, but he might have had a better time at the track. That is where Lamborghini means for the Sesto Elemento to play, and there would be no worries about the authorities potentially confiscating his rare ride. Related Video:
Top Gear names BMW i8 Car of the Year, Corvette, Ferrari, Mercedes also win big
Fri, Dec 5 2014The lads at Top Gear have released their listing of the finest cars of the past year, handing the ultimate honor to BMW's revolutionary i8 plug-in-hybrid supercar. "The i8 is a milestone in the annals of automotive history and a glorious statement for an exciting and positive future. The i8 delivers - and then some," the British mag wrote. The i8, though, was far from the only hybridized car to take victories. James May and Richard Hammond both highlighted hybrids as their personal cars of the year, with May saluting the Ferrari LaFerrari and the Hamster, unsurprisingly, heaping praise on the Porsche 918 Spyder. Jeremy Clarkson, meanwhile, opted to shock many by selecting not only an American car as his best of 2014, but giving the honor to of all things, a Corvette. Clarkson wasn't the only person to honor the USA's iconic sports car, with the new, 650-horsepower Z06 variant being named TG's Muscle Car of the Year. Other big winners include Mercedes-Benz, which TG honored for S-Class Coupe (Luxury Car of the Year), the new AMG GT (Sports Car of the Year) and the not-for-US C-Class Estate (Family Car of the Year). The 458 Italia Speciale A snagged a second win for Ferrari. The best of the rest include the Citroen C4 Cactus, Renault Twingo, Volkswagen Golf R, Lamborghini Huracan and Audi TT. Take a look below for the celebratory press blast from BMW. The BMW i8 wins Top Gear Car of the Year The BMW i8 has been named as Top Gear magazine's global Car of the Year 2014. The plug-in hybrid performance vehicle beat off some stiff competition from a host of other premium and luxury manufacturers to win the overall award. The editorial team of Top Gear commended the BMW i8 for its breadth of abilities. Its 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine combined with an electric motor gives searing acceleration and driver enjoyment but all wrapped in a package that takes BMW's EfficientDynamics philosophy to the extreme courtesy of CO2 emissions less than 49g/km and a 135mpg combined cycle figure. Charlie Turner, Editor in Chief at Top Gear magazine, said: "The BMW is a milestone in the annals of automotive history and a glorious statement for an exciting and positive future. The i8 delivers – and then some. It's the kind of car we should celebrate, a beautiful vision of the future, delivered now.
