Lego Lamborghini Sian is a life-size, 400,000-piece masterpiece
Tue, Jun 8 2021Three years ago, Lego took its model-building abilities to a new level with a life-size Bugatti Chiron model made entirely of Technic building pieces. Now the company has built another life-size supercar, this time, the Lamborghini Sian. This one went together faster and with fewer pieces, though the end result is just as impressive (and oddly, heavier). The total number of pieces used in this model was more than 400,000. And at the approximate price of 10 cents per piece, replicating the model would require around $40,000. Of course, you would need to obtain the 20 unique pieces designed specifically for this build. The other 134 piece designs are normal production Technic components. Alternatively, you could pick up the 1:8-scale kit Lego sells. It took a team of 15 people 8,660 hours to design and build the Lamborghini model. Of those, 3,290 were spent on the actual assembly. The final product weighs in at a whopping 4,850 pounds, or close to 1,000 pounds more than the real car. Lego also brought the model to Lamborghini to have the company give it a coat of paint. Lamborghini's path to the future is paved with forged composites
Wed, Jul 13 2016As far back as 1983, Lamborghini has been researching carbon fiber for automotive use. The automaker felt confident enough in its ability to work with the high-tech material in 1985 that a team led by Maurizio Reggiani, now the Lamborghini Board Member in charge of Research and Development, crafted a revolutionary Countach with a chassis made almost entirely of hand-laid carbon fiber. The result was spectacular in that the car's chassis weighed about half of its all-metal counterpart. It turned out that first foray into carbon fiber was just as spectacular when it was finally tested for crashworthiness, but in a completely different way. Catastrophic would be an appropriate word, according to Paolo Feraboli, who now leads Lambo's brand-new Advanced Composite Structures Laboratory in Seattle, Washington. Proving how far Lamborghini has come since that ill-fated carbon-fiber Countach Evoluzione, Feraboli told us during the ACSL's grand opening that today's Aventador, which boasts a high-tech carbon chassis, aced its very first crash test in 2009. Chalk that success up to high-tech computer modeling and the practical application of lessons learned over several decades of trial and error. The dull red monocoque of that crashed Aventador now hangs on the wall at the ACSL like a functional piece of art, a reminder of Lamborghini's cutting-edge milestones of the past. Lamborghini's future will be hewn from what the company calls forged composites. First seen on the stunning Sesto Elemento Concept from the 2010 Paris Motor Show, the patented carbon-forging process forgoes hand-laid sheets, injected resins, and high-heat autoclaves. Instead, wads of randomly oriented carbon fibers that sort of resemble the kind of dough you'd use to make pasta undergo a three-minute press inside a mold. The resulting parts are just as strong as other carbon-fiber bits, but can be mass-produced at a fraction of the cost. While it's true that cost is often a secondary consideration for high-end supercars, it's still relevant. By reducing the cost and increasing the scale of composite pieces, Lamborghini can then afford to spend more money on other parts of the car. It's not just body panels and chassis components that Lamborghini thinks it can build using forged composite technology. The Sesto Elemento featured forged-composite suspension control arms that haven't yet made it into production, but probably will soon.
Lamborghini Urus makes North American debut, will arrive in September
Wed, Jan 17 2018After officially revealing the production version of the new Urus last month, Lamborghini pulled the sheets off the super-SUV on Monday night at a private event at the Museum of Contemporary Art here in Detroit to give both North American media and customers of the brand their first look at the vehicle in the metal. It's the first time the Italian carmaker has had a presence in the Motor City during the Detroit Auto Show for quite some time, perhaps a sign of the importance placed on this model. The United States is Lamborghini's largest market, and the company expects nearly a third of its Urus production is destined to cross the Atlantic. If all goes to plan, the newly remodeled Sant' Agata Bolognese factory will have doubled its production output by this time next year. We will have a full eight months before we start to see how well Lamborghini can convince buyers to write checks, as the company tells us the first deliveries will start in September. With a starting price of $200,000, the Urus will have only a handful of competitors, namely the Bentley Bentayga and perhaps a very well-optioned Porsche Cayenne Turbo or Land Rover Range Rover SVAutobiography — though it now looks certain a Ferrari SUV is coming. Still, Lamborghini maintains that the Urus will be in a class of its own with its unrivaled horsepower-weight ratio and top speed of 189 mph.
