Lamborghini's next limited-edition experimental supercar coming soon
Thu, Sep 14 2017Lamborghini plans to release a very limited-edition supercar, which is at the time of writing still unnamed. As the company's R&D director Maurizio Reggiani said to CarAdvice in an interview, "Soon we will present to our most important customers a new version of what we call a one-off." By "one-off," Reggiani says the company means a short run of experimental cars created to showcase a new design direction and to introduce new technology, like the Lamborghini Centenario did. Call the resulting supercar a sellable concept car, if you will. In the Centenario, Lamborghini brought out rear-wheel steering. The new car would show the design direction of the Aventador's eventual replacement. What's more, Reggiani expects the upcoming car to be sold out by the time it is announced, just as the Reventon and its roadster version, the Veneno and the Sesto Elemento did. " We will announce it with our loyal customers that wait for this, we don't need to do more, we arrive at the motor show and the production is already sold out." CarAdvice deduces that the new car will be announced at the Geneva Motor Show next March, where Lamborghini will also show the new Urus – which will break cover in December. It will be a plug-in hybrid with a twin-turbo V8 engine. When Reggiani discussed the Urus with Autocar in December, he said that Lamborghini will keep turbocharging out of its supercars; the Urus needs the grunt that turbos provide, but the supercars will need the responsiveness of a naturally aspirated engine. Whether the "one-off" series car will still be naturally aspirated remains to be seen.Related Video:
Lamborghini Miura Retro Review: What it's like to drive the original supercar
Wed, Mar 29 2023“Glon, youÂ’re in the Miura.” Hang on, IÂ’m in what now? About a minute later, I have the keys to a 1973 Lamborghini Miura SV finished in Oro Metallizzato. Five minutes later, IÂ’m annoyed by the frosty winter air whooshing onto my face but too enthralled by the V12Â’s noise to close the window. The person who coined the phrase “never meet your heroes” clearly hasnÂ’t been let loose in the original supercar, a model of paramount importance in the pantheon of automotive history. Unveiled in 1966, and positioned above the 400 GT as LamborghiniÂ’s range-topping model, the Miura may as well have landed from a far, unexplored corner of the galaxy. It stretched about 172 inches long, 69 inches wide, and merely 41.5 inches tall, dimensions that gave it proportions more closely aligned with todayÂ’s definition of a supercar than with the crop of GTs whizzing by in the left lane of the Italian autostrada in the 1960s. I canÂ’t say that the Miura broke with tradition, Lamborghini didnÂ’t have much in the way of tradition three short years after its gutsy inception, but it looked nothing like the 400 GT. Highly respected Italian designer Marcello Gandini penned the Miura while working for Bertone. Its Fiat 850 Spider-sourced headlights were mounted nearly flat, its door handles were integrated into a column of fins, and its roof line peaked above the seats before flowing into a Kammback-like rear end. Mamma mia! It may look humble parked next to an Aventador, but its design was revolutionary in the 1960s. Equally revolutionary was the technical layout. While the 400 GT — and most high-end GTs sold during this era — were fitted with a front-mounted engine, the MiuraÂ’s 3.9-liter V12 was positioned directly behind the passenger compartment. Odder still, it was mounted transversally. Some historians claim that the inspiration for this arrangement was the original Mini, which stretched just 120 inches long thanks in part to a transverse-mounted engine. The MiniÂ’s role in shaping the Miura has never been proven, but whatÂ’s certain is moving the engine back and turning it 90 degrees changed LamborghiniÂ’s history. More than simply a new model for what was then a small, obscure company, the Miura became nearly a deity in the automotive stratosphere. It blazed the course that dozens of supercars have followed since. Rejigging the proportions required rearranging the interior.
Lamborghini Huracan Sterrato Opera Unica special edition took 370 hours to paint
Fri, Aug 4 2023This Lamborghini Huracan Sterrato is a one-off special edition model named the Opera Unica, and it was made to further celebrate Lamborghini’s 60th anniversary year that has already spawned other special projects. WhatÂ’s unique about this particular Sterrato isnÂ’t the performance, but instead, itÂ’s the paint. LamborghiniÂ’s Ad Personam customization department devised a new “crystal effect” paint process for this vehicle, and the total paint time amounted to 370 hours. By our math, thatÂ’s a lot of hours. The goal was to create a car that gave the effect of frozen liquid, and Lamborghini combined three different blues to make that happen. Its main backdrop color is Blu Amnis, but then painters went in by hand with Blu Grifo and Blu Fedra to give it the effect you see in the photos. Lamborghini says its inspiration comes from marine landscapes and the colors of Sardinia. As contrast to the blue, matte black paint is then used on the roof, sills, front-light casings, front and rear splitters, fenders and wheel arch extensions. Of course, the interior is unique, too, with Blu Delphinus leather and blue-dyed Alcantara. The start/stop switch cover is finished in the same crystal effect paint as the exterior, and youÂ’ll also find that look applied to the “Opera Unica Porto Cervo 2023” special edition plate. In case you were wondering, Lamborghini is in fact considering this Sterrato as one of the 1,499 it will ultimately build. It hasnÂ’t named an owner or a price, but considering the craftsmanship that went into this vehicle, itÂ’s sure to be an extravagant number for whoever puts it into their garage.
