Model Overview
If you want the more powerful V6 in the Sorento, you'll need to step up to the top-of-the-line EX trim. Otherwise, the 4-cylinder engine is offered with Base, LX, and EX trims. Standard equipment on all Sorento models is extensive, and includes a trip computer, power windows, locks and mirrors, air conditioning, a Bluetooth hands-free calling interface and a sound system that includes an MP3-compatible CD player, USB and aux inputs and Sirius satellite radio. Base models are equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission, while LX models step up to a 6-speed automatic in addition to body-color heated mirrors with integrated turn signals for a more upscale appearance. Automatic one-touch up/down windows, a rear center armrest are also included. Top EX models include push-button start, smart keyless entry, dual-zone climate control, upgraded upholstery, fog lamps, heated mirrors, automatic headlamps and larger 18-inch alloy wheels. Options on the Base model are very limited, but options on the LX include a third-row seat, plus a Convenience Package that includes heated front seats, a backup system, fog lamps and roof rails. Some of the best options are reserved for the EX. Among the exclusives are a Premium Package, with a panoramic sunroof and leather seats; a rear DVD entertainment system and a Limited Package that brings chrome wheels plus a navigation system, real-time traffic information, accent interior lighting and a 550-watt Infinity surround-sound system. Both engines in the Sorento are new for 2011. A 175-horsepower, 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine is the base offering, and the 6-speed automatic that's available through most of the line is an all-new design. The optional V6 makes 276 horsepower and brings especially strong acceleration with a smooth, refined character, while the 4-cylinder is quite economical, achieving EPA ratings of up to 21 mpg city, 29 mpg highway. All-wheel drive is available with LX or EX trims, regardless of the engine. Kia's all-wheel drive system can send up to 50 percent of power to the rear wheels when needed and comes with a locking center differential that can help provide better traction in harsh weather conditions--deep snow, for example, or to traverse a muddy back road. First and second-row seating in the Sorento is ample for full-size adults, and the optional third-row has enough space for children though it does reduce cargo room. Second and third-row seats both fold forward to allow 72.5 cubic feet of cargo space in all. The new Sorento has the suspension configuration of a typical sedan, with MacPherson struts in front and an independent multi-link setup in back, so it rides quite well. Kia hasn't completely forgotten about weekend hauling and towing needs--the Sorento can tow up to 3,500 pounds. Safety features on the 2011 Sorento now include seat-mounted side airbags, side-curtain bags and front active headrests on all models, along with electronic stability control and anti-lock brakes, plus Hill Start Assist Control and Downhill Brake Control, which uses the vehicle's transmission to help moderate speed on slippery grades.

Kia Soul EV spied, shows over 250-mile range

Thu, Sep 27 2018

The upcoming Kia Soul EV has been spied again at the Nurburgring. This time, it was wearing substantially less camouflage, revealing a shape very similar to conventionally powered Kia Soul prototypes. We also get our first look at the compact hatchback's interior. The interior reveals that the Soul EV should have impressive driving range, too. We'll get to the design aspects of this prototype in a moment, but first we want to address the car's range, which is shown on the infotainment display. It clearly shows that this car had 92 percent of its charge remaining, with an estimated range of 437 kilometers, or about 271 miles. That's a lot of range, and it's also in keeping with the European range estimate for the Hyundai Kona Electric, which was 292 miles. We don't expect quite that much range in the U.S., since the Kona is rated for 258 miles under EPA testing. But this makes us think the Soul could have roughly the Kona's U.S. range, which would be impressive. This could also suggest that the Soul EV will have the same 201-horsepower electric motor as the Kona and the Kona's cousin, the Niro EV. It isn't just range that's revealed with this prototype. This example gives us the best look we've had yet at the little electric. It shows us that the Soul EV shares the same boxy shape, boomerang-shaped taillights, and full-width headlights of the gasoline models. There are some unique deviations, though. While the wide headlight section is the same shape as the internal combustion model, it actually appears to house the main illuminating lights. The other version puts the lights for forward illumination lower in the front fascia. On the Soul EV, these lower light pods are still there, but they appear to be for accent lighting, maybe turn signals or possibly fog lights. The large lower grille of the gasoline Soul is also virtually gone except for a small opening at the bottom. It will be interesting to see what Kia does with all this extra space. The interior is an evolutionary take on the current model. The biggest difference appears to be a revised infotainment system with a wider screen and buttons placed underneath, rather than on each side. This being the EV model, it has a little rotary knob for shifting rather than a lever, and the instrument panel shows a speedometer and a dial that provides power information. The doors seem to have some interesting metallic trim with swoopy patterns.

2019 Kia Niro EV starts at $1,500 more than Hyundai Kona Electric

Wed, May 1 2019

Pricing for the 2019 Kia Niro EV has been revealed, and it has the highest starting price of any Hyundai or Kia electric car that we know the price of right now – assuming the Soul EV won't be pricier. The base price for the Niro EV EX is $39,495 before the federal tax credit. With the credit, the price falls to $31,995. The top trim Niro EV EX Premium jumps up to $44,995 before the credit, and $37,495 after it. For the extra $5,500, the Niro EV EX Premium adds a sunroof, real leather trim, heated and ventilated front seats, eight-inch touchscreen, navigation and wireless phone charging. The standard Niro EV is still well-equipped with standard adaptive cruise control, seven-inch touchscreen, lane centering, automatic emergency braking and blind-spot warning. Each also comes with standard DC fast charging capability. In comparison, the 2019 Hyundai Kona Electric starts at $37,995 ($30,495 with tax credit), which is $1,500 less than the Niro. The Kona is a bit smaller than the Niro, though it also offers more range than the Niro with 258 miles versus 239. The Chevy Bolt EV's base price is the cheapest at $37,495, but the tax credit has been reduced for the Chevy to $3,750 – and Chevy isn't dropping the price any to compensate. That means with the credit, the Bolt EV ends up the most expensive of these three at $33,745. The Bolt EV doesn't include DC fast charging as standard, either, and its EPA-rated range is a mile shy of the Niro's.

Kia Niro crossover is the company's first dedicated hybrid

Thu, Feb 11 2016

Kia arrives in Chicago this week with the Niro, an all-new hybrid crossover joining the company's growing electrified lineup. It's not Kia's first hybrid, but it is the first dedicated hybrid, designed from the ground up with gasoline-electric power. Following the Niro concept from the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show and the teaser images that followed, the production Niro joins the Soul EV and Optima Hybrid in the automaker's EcoDynamics line. Though full specifications and dimensions have yet to be revealed, the Niro rides on a 106-inch wheelbase to slot it size-wise in between the smaller Sportage and larger Sorento. The parallel hybrid powertrain mirrors that of the Ioniq – which is, in turn, parent company Hyundai's first dedicated hybrid and which we're not expecting to see in person until next month. The system pairs a 1.6-liter four with an electric motor, a lithium-ion battery, and a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. The sum total is 146 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque, and a projected fuel-consumption rating of 50 miles per gallon. View 18 Photos According to Kia's product guru Orth Hedrick, the company has tuned the Niro for "the best combination of outstanding mpg, an engaging driving experience, utility, and most importantly, a stunning design that doesn't shout 'hybrid'." Of course the taller, less streamlined form means it won't cut through the air like a more streamlined sedan or hatchback would, but it's still much slipperier than most crossovers: its drag coefficient of 0.29 comes a lot closer to the Ioniq's 0.24 than it does to the Soul EV's 0.35. We'll wait to see it in person before we decide how that streamlined crossover styling comes across. But for now you can scope out the full details released thus far in the press release below.
