Jeep Scrambler truck to debut at L.A. Auto Show next month
Wed, Oct 31 2018Jeep is planning to premiere a pickup truck at the Los Angeles Auto Show next month. We all know what that means: It's Scrambler time, folks. This news comes courtesy of a press release talking about the show in general. It casually mentions that "a pickup truck from Jeep" is coming. Up until now, we weren't sure when the Wrangler-based pickup would make its debut, but that's not a problem anymore. There sure aren't any other pickups from Jeep in the works we know about. The release details a few other debuts happening at L.A. as well. Audi confirmed we'll be seeing the E-Tron GT four-door concept. Mitsubishi is planning to show off a new concept car — it better not be an SUV with any Evo references. Hyundai is debuting an "all new" vehicle, and Kia is apparently planning on multiple new vehicle debuts. All of that is great, but the biggest splash is almost guaranteed to be the highly anticipated Scrambler. Everything is still speculation, but we're expecting the Jeep truck to offer both the Wrangler V6 and turbo four-cylinder powertrains at launch. We anticipate a diesel showing up at some point down the road, but almost certainly not at this auto show. L.A. mostly plays host to a whole lot of mobility pod news, but there are always a few big reveals like this one. Porsche fans will be able to see the 992-generation 911 on the show floor that we've already seen about 10 times over in spy photos too. Texan finds creative way to clear highway fast lane
Tue, Jun 14 2016Few things are as infuriating as someone driving slow in the fast lane. A Jeep driver from Texas found himself in just such a predicament near Fort Worth, and came up with a creative way to urge the offending lane-blocker to get a move on. Machine, a YouTuber and off-road enthusiast from the Lone Star State, posted some dashcam footage to his account back in March which showed him stuck behind a slow driver. He was attempting to pass a slow-moving bobtail Peterbilt tractor when he got hung up by a white Ford Econoline squatting in the passing lane. On his YouTube page, Machine stated that the van, which apparently belonged to a plumbing company, was traveling along between 60 and 70 miles per hour along a stretch of highway with a stated speed limit of 70 mph. Confronted with the slow-moving van blocking the left lane, and traffic in the right lane, Machine called the number on the back of the Econoline and politely asked him to get out of the way. In the Econoline, the passenger picked up and was momentarily confused as Machine asked him to ask his driver to move out of the lane and let traffic pass. The van sped up, passed a tractor-trailer, and got out of the way, much to the relief of the traffic behind him. According to CBS news, 38 states have laws on the books to punish slow drivers squatting in the passing lane. In five of those states, the fine is upwards of $1000, and 22 states classify it as a misdemeanor. Chrysler resolves recall issue with NHTSA, will inspect, upgrade affected Jeeps
Tue, 18 Jun 2013Chrysler made big news earlier in the month by refusing a recall request from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for the 1993-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2002-2007 Jeep Liberty. Last week, NHTSA boss David Strickland countered by defending his agency's request for the recall of 2.7 million Jeep SUVs. Today marked the deadline for Chrysler to formally respond to NHTSA, and it seems that both parties have met in the middle with Chrysler inspecting and upgrading some of the affected vehicles without using the word "recall," which would constitute the admission of a defect; instead, Chrysler said that it is conducting a "voluntary campaign."
At issue on these vehicles is the positioning of the fuel tank behind the rear axle that could get damaged during a rear-end collision. NHTSA has stated that at least 51 people have been killed in rear-end collisions involving these Jeeps after the vehicles caught fire, to which Chrysler countered by pointing out that both models "met and exceeded" the requirements for fuel-system integrity.
As a compromise on the situation, Chrysler says that it will inspect all pre-2004 Grand Cherokees and pre-2007 Liberty models and, "if necessary, provide an upgrade to the rear structure of the vehicle." According to Automotive News, this upgrade will consist of adding a trailer hitch that will presumably better protect the rear-mounted gas tank. Vehicles already equipped with a factory or Mopar hitch will not be modified. Chrysler's official statement on the matter is posted below, but no additional information has been released, such as when the campaign will begin and how many vehicles could be affected.
