Stellantis and LG announce Canadian EV battery joint venture

Wed, Mar 23 2022

SEOUL — South Korean battery giant LG Energy Solution (LGES) said on Wednesday it plans to invest $1.5 billion to set up a joint venture with Stellantis in Canada. LGES owns 51% of the joint venture, tentatively named "LGES-STLA JV" and Stellantis owns 49%, LGES said in a regulatory filing. In October, LGES and Stellantis NV struck an electric vehicle (EV) battery production joint venture, targeting to start production by the first quarter of 2024 and aiming to have an annual production capacity of 40 gigawatt hours of batteries. In a separate regulatory filing, LGES said it plans to acquire a stake worth $542 million in ES America to respond to demand from EV startups in the United States. LGES is considering building a factory in Arizona to meet demand in the United States, two people familiar with the matter told Reuters, adding that the plant is expected to primarily produce cylindrical battery cells. LGES has its own factory in Michigan and two battery joint ventures with General Motors in Ohio and Tennessee. "We are considering a new production site, but nothing has been decided yet," said a spokesperson at LGES. LGES, which counts Tesla, GM and Volkswagen among its customers, currently has battery production sites in the United States, China, Poland, Indonesia and South Korea. Jeep Wrangler pickup renderings: Latest imaginings of the Scrambler

Wed, Apr 4 2018

The Jeep Wrangler-based JT pickup, which everybody refers to as Scrambler (boy, we're sure going to be surprised if that isn't the real name), doesn't hit the showroom floor until April 2019. That is a long time to wait. What's an impatient nation of Jeep fans to do in the intervening year? Speculate on what it looks like, of course. Jeep Scrambler Forum has sent renderings of the truck our way, shown in the photo gallery above. They depict the Scrambler in two scenes and in four classic colors: Sarge Green, Hella Yella, Sting-Gray and Firecracker Red. The illustrations, we're told, are based on "spy photos, CAD leaks and insider tips we've received." View 7 Photos Like the coming Ford Ranger, the Jeep truck stands to make a huge splash in the hot midsize pickup market, with Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne saying he expects to see 100,000 Wrangler pickups sold each year. Compare these latest renderings with a set of renderings that ran back in June on JL Wrangler Forums. (We're reprising a gallery of them below, along with a gallery of spy shots.) You'll note some differences between them and the latest renderings, a key one being the seeming absence of that kink (Jeepmeister kink?) where truck cab meets bed. See what other differences you can spot. It'll be a good way to help pass the time until next April. Dodge and Jeep recalling 895k SUVs for possibility of headliner fires

Fri, 11 Jul 2014

Dodge and Jeep are announcing recalls of a total of 895,000 Durango and Grand Cherokee models worldwide from the 2011 through 2014 model years. There's a possibility that the wiring in the sun visor can short circuit and cause a fire. It specifically affects vehicles built between January 5, 2010, and December 11, 2013, and there are approximately 651,000 of them in the US, 45,700 in Canada, 23,000 in Mexico and 175,000 outside of North America.
Screws that fasten the sunvisor to the headliner may pierce wires in the visor, if the part has been removed or serviced, potentially causing a fire risk. If the wires short circuit, they could overheat and potentially combust. The automakers report three injuries caused by this defect, and according to the investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, "there may be a total of 52 unique fire incidents."
To fix the problem, Dodge and Jeep will inspect the vehicles for suspect wiring, and all of the models, whether damaged or not, will get a new sun visor spacer with a wire guide to stop the possibility of short circuits. According to the automakers' announcement, "this condition is not present in vehicles which have not had the headliner or vanity mirror serviced." They will notify affected owners, and repairs will begin in August.
