Standard features on the Laredo include a six-way power driver seat and 60/40-split folding rear seats with folding head restraints. Step up to the Limited and you also get amenities such as electroluminescent instrument lighting and the Jeep Memory System keyed into the driver seat, radio and driver-side mirror. Freedom versions include a unique chrome trim on the grille, graphite-painted 17-inch wheels, tubular side rails and Freedom Edition badging. The Special Edition offers monochromatic paint similar to the Limited and four-wheel-drive versions get foglights, Quadra Trac II, a 10-disc CD changer with Infinity speakers and special badging. Luxurious Overland offers special leather seats, a 4.7-liter V8 as standard, dual-zone climate control and a 10-disc CD changer. Options available on all trim levels include adjustable brake and accelerator pedals, a tire-pressure monitor system and an engine block heater. The Columbia Edition offers unique wheels, a sunroof, foglights, two-tone seats, aluminum dash trim, the Infinity stereo and a complimentary Columbia parka. Powertrains and PerformanceThe Grand Cherokee is available with Jeep's old standby 4.0-liter inline six or a 4.7-liter V8. The six is good for 195 horsepower and 230 pound-feet of torque and the V8 is available in high-output form making 265 hp and a 235-hp version. The more powerful high-output V8 is standard on the Overland and optional on the Limited and Freedom. The Overland offers only a V8, Laredo offers only a six-cylinder and all other trim levels have a choice of six or eight cylinders. All Grand Cherokees are available in two- or four-wheel drive. The Laredo 4x4 features Select-Trac full-time transfer case or Quadra-Trac for users who don't tow heavy loads. The more advanced Quadra-Trac II on-demand system is standard on the Special Edition and Limited models. SafetyMultistage driver and front-passenger airbags are standard across all trims; ceiling-mounted side curtain airbags are standard for the Freedom trim and optional for Laredo and Limited models. In NHTSA frontal-impact crash testing, the Grand Cherokee earned three stars for the driver and front passenger. In side-impact testing, the Grand Cherokee rated four stars out of five for front-seat occupants and a full five stars for rear-seat occupants. In rollover resistance, it merits just two stars. The IIHS gave the 'ute an overall "Marginal" rating in offset crash testing. Interior Design and Special FeaturesThe Grand Cherokee seats up to five passengers, and offers ample head- and shoulder room. However, maximum cargo space is a mere 71 cubic feet. Overland and Freedom models offer comfy seating, but rear-seat legroom is lacking. Driving ImpressionsThe Jeep isn't a pleasant companion for the daily slog. It feels heavy, steers slowly and exhibits ample body roll. Taken off-road, its story changes; the Grand Cherokee is the best midsize SUV on the market when it comes to boulder-bashing. |

Inexperienced Jeep driver buries his Wrangler at sea
Mon, May 16 2016There's an old maxim in off-roading that states, "Four-wheel drive doesn't keep you from getting stuck, it just gets you stuck in worse places." The truth of this statement was perfectly illustrated recently in a YouTube video of a Jeep Wrangler digging its own grave at the beach. On May 11, a YouTuber named Dan M uploaded a video he titled, "Drunk guy doesn't know how to off-road and ruins nice Jeep." The video, shot at dusk on a rocky looking beach, shows a blue Wrangler driving out into the surf without a care in the world. Dan, providing commentary along with an unseen female companion, was impressed with the Jeep driver's dash at first. "Wow, he must do that a lot because he ain't scared of getting stuck or anything," said Dan. As the Wrangler got deeper into the water, the Dan's friend expressed her doubts that the Jeep driver would make it out, especially when the Jeep got snagged on a little spit of sand sticking out into the water. Dan wasn't worried, however. "No, he'll manage to get out of there, he'll make it out of there. He'll back out and get out," he said. Dan's confidence in the Jeep driver was sadly misplaced, unfortunately. The driver managed to get the Jeep stuck on the sand bar then made the rookiest of rookie mistakes–he just gunned it. "Oh man, he's done! He's done!" yelled Dan as the Jeep driver proceeded to dig a huge hole in the sand that sunk the Wrangler up to its frame just as the tide started coming in. With that kind of dunking, especially in salt water, that Wrangler was probably a total loss, much like the Grand Cherokee that got washed downriver last week somewhere in Europe. Dodge and Jeep recalling 895k SUVs for possibility of headliner fires
Fri, 11 Jul 2014Dodge and Jeep are announcing recalls of a total of 895,000 Durango and Grand Cherokee models worldwide from the 2011 through 2014 model years. There's a possibility that the wiring in the sun visor can short circuit and cause a fire. It specifically affects vehicles built between January 5, 2010, and December 11, 2013, and there are approximately 651,000 of them in the US, 45,700 in Canada, 23,000 in Mexico and 175,000 outside of North America.
Screws that fasten the sunvisor to the headliner may pierce wires in the visor, if the part has been removed or serviced, potentially causing a fire risk. If the wires short circuit, they could overheat and potentially combust. The automakers report three injuries caused by this defect, and according to the investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, "there may be a total of 52 unique fire incidents."
To fix the problem, Dodge and Jeep will inspect the vehicles for suspect wiring, and all of the models, whether damaged or not, will get a new sun visor spacer with a wire guide to stop the possibility of short circuits. According to the automakers' announcement, "this condition is not present in vehicles which have not had the headliner or vanity mirror serviced." They will notify affected owners, and repairs will begin in August.
