So the all too familiar story goes like this..... "Man buys barn find Jeep with intent to restore.  Man gets married, has kids, Jeep sits in garage for years....completely ignored.  Under intense scrutiny from significant other Jeep becomes expendable."

SO....up for auction is a 1973 CJ-5 with what I truly believe to be 38,379 original miles.  I purchased this Jeep in March of 2008 from a very reputable classic Jeep dealer in Athens, AL, Gilbert Jeeps and 4x4 http://webejeeping.com/.  Mr. Gilbert had found this Jeep in a barn in North Alabama where it had spent the last dozen years sitting.  After replacing the gas tank, spark plugs and ingition coil, the Jeep fired right up and ran suprisingly smooth and strong.  Obviously the CJ was not road worthy after years of neglect, but was certainly a prime candiate for a full restoration.  I purchased the CJ from Mr. Gilbert for $3,500 and happily trailered it back to my Louisville, KY home.

With rightful excitement, I began work in my garage immediately by pulling the battery, removing the seats, seat frames, dash and instrument cluster, removing the far gone rusty windshield frame, and removing all of the lights.  The CJ was very difficult to roll in and out of my garage due to the giant, dry rotted Gumbo mudders that it had, so I sourced a set of F-150 wheel and tires that were much easier to manage.  And this is where the Jeep's life takes an unexpected turn...it sits...untouched in my garage for the next 3 1/2 years.  In September of 2011, my family moved to our current home where the Jeep has sat outside for the last 18 months.

The Jeep is 100% orginal with exception of the F-150 wheels and tires, and a set of aftermarket Cherry Bomb mufflers that were on it when I bought it.  The CJ has its original AMC 304 V-8 motor, 3 speed T-15 manual tranny, a super-strong Dana 44 rear diff, full-floating Dana 30 front diff, and obviously 4 wheel drive powered by a 2 speed Spicer 20 transfer case.  While the windshield frame was severly rusted and tool box compartment under the passenger seat rusted through, the remaining sheet metal is in decent shape.  The floor pans and body tub are solid, as well as the tailgate, hood and grille.  One of the fenders in dented pretty good and would need to be replaced.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  This CJ ran and drove when I purchased it in 2008.  I drove it around Mr. Gilbert's lot and on to my trailer, so I do not feel that it would take much to get it running again.  My Father and i restored a CJ when I was in my teens and this Jeep is a prime candidate for a full, frame off resto...I simply no longer have the time or resources to do it myself.  The odometer reads 38,379, and like I mentioned before, I truly believe that to be accurate but I certainly cannot prove it.  Even parted out, this Jeep is easily worth the modest reserve I have set.  I simply cannot stand to let it sit untoched any longer.

The Jeep is located South of Louisville, KY, just 4 miles from Exit 117 on I-65.  Any winning bidder would responsible for pickup.  I can also provide more detailed photos upon request.  I have every piece that has been removed with exception of the seats and original tires and wheels.  All parts will be included with the CJ as well as a 1973 service manual.

Happy bidding!

Jeep: Beautiful Lands

Mon, Feb 2 2015

Jeep emphasized the global nature of its all-new Renegade in a 90-second spot during the 2015 Super Bowl. Starting out in America, and with This Land is Your Land playing in the background, the spot splices images of the all-new Renegade with scenery from across the United States. As a global product and the first Jeep built outside the US, though, the spot quickly moves beyond America's borders, showing Renegades, people and scenery from around the globe. As for the Renegade, you can read all about it in our First Drive.

Chinese automaker Great Wall wants to buy Jeep

Mon, Aug 21 2017

As Chinese automakers look to break into the U.S. market, we've been hearing about how companies in China are courting FCA. After GM and Volkswagen each shut the possibility of a merger, an unnamed Chinese company stepped up to the table. Its offer to buy FCA was refused, but the suitors are still knocking. Now, Automotive News reports that Chinese automaker Great Wall is interested in making a deal specifically to purchase the Jeep brand. Great Wall President Wang Fengying told Automotive News in an email that her company is "connecting with FCA" to start the negotiation process. FCA, though, told the publication that it hasn't been approached by Great Wall. Great Wall's offer, if accepted, would separate Jeep ͗ FCA's most valuable brand ͗ from the rest of the FCA portfolio. It's not unthinkable that FCA would consider selling Jeep on its own. FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne has said he'd consider spinning off Jeep and Ram. The company also said it could see making Maserati and Alfa Romeo into a separate company as well. Jeep, though, might be worth more on its own that the entirety of FCA with Jeep included, according to Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas. This complicates the matter for any potential buyer that owns FCA franchise dealerships, and for FCA, for which Jeep is an attractor for selling the company as a whole. Great Wall, which only generates $14.7 billion in annual revenue (compared to FCA's $131 billion), is confident it could raise the funds to buy Jeep. As Automotive News points out, though, there could be a bidding war brewing if Jeep can be bought separately from the rest of the brands. Still, As Great Wall spokesman Xu Hui said, the company has been following Jeep, and sees it as a key to achieving its goal of becoming "the world's largest SUV maker." Great Wall already has research and development facilities in Detroit and Los Angeles. The Chinese company is also considering building a factory in the U.S. rather than in Mexico. Whether or not Great Wall acquires Jeep, it wants to sell SUVs in the U.S., and having a factory in the States means it wouldn't have to worry about Trump renegotiating NAFTA. Jeep is currently expanding its market presence, and has new vehicles, the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer, on the way in 2019. Related Video: This content is hosted by a third party. Fiat 500X poised for Paris catwalk

Wed, 05 Feb 2014

We've known for some time that the new, Fiat-based baby Jeep (which may or may not be called the Jeepster) is set to arrive at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show. What we weren't sure of was whether its platform mate, the so-called Fiat 500X, would be doing so alongside or at a later date. Well, according to Reuters, we'll get to see the first all-wheel-drive 500 later this year in the City of Lights.
Yes, we can expect the 500X to arrive at the 2014 Paris Motor Show, according to an official with an Italian trade union. The unnamed source cited retooling at Fiat's Melfi factory, in southern Italy, which currently produces the Grande Punto. It's expected that the newest member of the growing 500 family will replace the Suzuki SX4-based Fiat Sedici, although when the X will go on sale remains an open question.
According to Reuters, both the Jeepster and 500X will be built alongside each other in Italy. Whether the 500X will cross the pond with it's slat-grilled cousin, though, remains to be seen (we're leaning towards yes).
