I have a nice little 1971 CJ5 for sale. If you're looking for one to make a cream puff out of this may be it.

Let me clarify one item so we're all on the same page. I'm going to say this Jeep is rust free. What I mean by that is there are no panels to replace, no floors to repair, none of that painful stuff. Now is there some light surface rust in places, certainly but nothing major. This Jeep stayed in an enclosed garage all its life. The dad bought it in 71. Mississippi didn't have titles at the time. The son acquired it in 78 and that was the first title issued. He has had it up until a few months ago. A guy bought it for his wife, she couldn't drive a manual transmission and I ended up with it. I have no idea what the actual mileage is.

Starting with the good. Sound body, new windshield, 10ft paint job (not professional). Runs and drives nice. Transmission shifts perfectly, Spicer/Dana 18 single stick transfer case shifts and works great. Locking hubs on front. Seats are OK, but could stand new covers. The headlights work and one tail light works. Blinkers are toast. New steering wheel (it had a chain steering wheel on it when I got it).

Now for the not so good. None of it really bad, just things that will need to be addressed. The previous owner (PO) was let's say creative and so there are some things needing attention.

Let's start with the gas tank. It had this monster what looked to be homemade tank in it when I brought it home.It had been sitting for a little over a year so thankfully they decided to use a boat tank (pictured) and not try to use this tank. It must have been near full when they stopped driving it since the tank had several inches of crud and rust in the bottom. It was also welded into the Jeep. I cut it out and you can still see part of one of the mounts in one of the pictures. So the boat tank is in it for the present. Your choice would be a rear mounted original tank or getting an underseat kit available online. While we're taking about the tank. The PO cut a access hole in the bed floor to access the sending unit and fuel line hookup. Can easily be repaired but its there. For some reason when he put the monster tank in it, he moved the gas filler to the side where the spare tire mount would be. No clue why. I moved it back to the correct spot, put a spare tire carrier back on and covered the hole with aluminum (pictured).

If it doesn't sell, my plans are to get a EZ Wiring 8 circuit kit and rewire the Jeep. The wiring on these Jeeps was sketchy to begin with. The lights and blinkers need addressing so doing the whole thing just makes sense. The kits are less than a $100. Cheap for the peace of mind. I've already bought a new turn signal assembly with horn for the Jeep.

Part of the heater was missing and the fan didn't run. I was able to pick up a good original heater for the Jeep and this will be included. I've been leaning more to a Mojave type heater mounted on the passenger side. Just an option.

The dash is nice except where the PO drilled some holes for a speaker. I think this could be repaired with little trouble. There is no glove box. I noticed a homemade cover over the hole to access the brake master cylinder.

The tool box under the passenger seat has some minor surface rust but otherwise good to go. A little brushing and some paint and it'll be fine. Seats could use some attention but serviceable as they are.

It has a 225 Dauntless V6. Runs great. Starts right up. The air cleaner is one I had laying around. I would like to find an original so I could hook up the PCV hoses correctly. The PO put a crossflow radiator in it at some time. The rear seal on the transfer case was leaking pretty bad when I got it. I replaced the seal this past weekend and now good to go. It has a new starter in it. It starts up fine but I'm just not sure about the sound it makes when the starter engages.  4WD and hubs lock in and out as they should.

The left front fender took a lick at some time and had a 2 - 3" split in it. It looks like they put bondo on it and didn't weld the split up. The bondo has since fallen out. Will need to be repaired.

As for the tires. Although they look good in the pics, they would only serve you around the neighborhood at slow speeds or on the farm. They will need to be replaced. They're cracking on the sidewalls pretty bad.

That's about it. I need to free up some space in the shop but I'm not going to give it away. Its too nice a Jeep for that. You don't find Jeeps like this east of the Mississippi, especially in mud country.

$500 non-refundable deposit within 48 hours of auction end. The rest due in cash at pickup. Cashier's Check Ok but must clear bank before Jeep will be released. All moneys  should change hands within 7 days. I'll work with you or your carrier to get it loaded. If you have less than 10 feedback, don't bid, I will cancel and block your bid. No exceptions. Please ask all questions through Ebay before bidding. I'm available most of the time to talk so leave your number and I'll call you back. Thanks.

Maserati Levante crossover not Jeep based after all?

Thu, 20 Feb 2014

Maserati has been teasing its crossover project since 2011, which is when it first showed off the Kubang concept (pictured above). Still, the production version, rumored to be called the Levante, remains a complete mystery. The CUV was first rumored to borrow the platform from the Jeep Grand Cherokee, but new rumors indicate that the Italian, luxury crossover might actually take the underpinnings from the Quattroporte and Ghibli.
In a brief interview, Maserati CEO Harald Wester told CNN Money that the Levante wouldn't use Jeep's platform. Motor Trend spoke with an unnamed Maserati engineer who confirmed the rumor. Officially, the company says that no decision has been made.
We can add this to another long list of rumors about the Italian CUV. It was originally supposed to be built at Chrysler's Jefferson North assembly plant in Detroit. Then, plans were changed to build it in Italy.

Abandoned Jeep found under twenty feet of snow in Donner Pass

Tue, Mar 14 2017

You guys have heard of Donner Pass, right? The dreaded mountain pass in the northern Sierra Nevadas out in California where an ill-fated group of mid-19th century pioneers got lost and fell to cannibalism to survive? Of course you have. Well, it seems that the pass has claimed another victim. It's not a pack of overly-optimistic farmers from Illinois this time, but a sad and lonely Jeep Cherokee. Last Thursday, the California Highway Patrol base at Truckee, California, posted a picture of the rear end of a forlorn-looking XJ with a mangled rear end buried under a veritable mountain of snow and ice. Discovered by a CalTrans truck-mounted snowblower around Serene Lakes near Donner Summit, a CHP representative told Jalopnik they believe the old white XJ has been sitting there since the beginning of winter. More than twenty feet of snow and ice are piled atop the Jeep, a winter's worth of snowplow leavings. Thankfully, the CHP found no bodies or anything else untoward in the XJ when they were arrived. CHP Truckee suggested that the Jeep's owner left it there, perhaps after a breakdown, and left it when successive layers of snow and ice entombed it. Since it's not blocking traffic and doesn't pose a safety hazard, CalTrans decided to leave the Jeep where they found it. The XJ's owner hasn't been identified yet. Hopefully they're not in too much of a hurry to get their Jeep back, because that thing isn't moving until late spring at the earliest.
