Item For Sale: 1999 Isuzu Amigo 2 door SUV with 4-wheel drive and removable soft top! These Amigos are rare and hard to find, especially in good running condition.
Options and Accessories: Fuel Injected V6, 5 Speed manual transmission, power steering, brakes, mirrors, locks and windows, pop-up sunroof, soft top, alloy wheels, AM-FM cassette and CD stereo, air conditioning, factory tachometer, push button 4X4 with high-low range floor lever, rear spare tire carrier, taillight guards, rear step bumper, Jet black with gray interior, front bucket seats, rear bench seat, deluxe cloth, etc...COOL LITTLE SUV! Interior Condition: Minor wear/ stains typical of age and use but all in all great condition. Clean, comfortable seats. Prior owner was a smoker, but no noticeable major stains or burns. Body Condition: Excellent, solid, straight and clean original body. Has minor blistering at bottom of rear rocker panels just in front of rear tires but no hols and is just starting to bubble. One spot on the rear door where the metal has been slightly pushed out. On the front driver side, the quarter panel is pushed slightly in on the front edge (see picture). Other than that, the body is very nice and has straight doors, quarters, fenders, , bumpers, etc. Paint Condition: Nice, decent, still pretty shiny overall and appears to be original. Minor scratch or chip here or there but really looks great overall and is very nice. Tire Condition: Almost new, with still about 85% tread on them. Everything is balanced, and tires have been rotated at regular intervals. No shakes or wobbles here! Running/Driving Condition: Starts excellent and runs great. Revs up strong with no hesitations. Transmission shifts through all gears very smoothly, and clutch grabs well. 4X4 engages as it should, and works great. When I first bought the Amigo, I only drove it 140 miles before the original motor threw a rod. I replaced the motor with one from an Isuzu Trooper that had 95K at the time. When the engine was installed, I had my mechanic check the clutch and put a new timing belt on as well. This is one of the best starting engines I've ever seen, and will be a great runner for years to come. Also included with sale is the original engine, to be used at your discretion. Also this model Amigo does not have cruise control, but I have almost all of the parts to get that installed, and shouldn't be a problem, these are all included with sale. Since I've had it, I have installed a good running engine, new Rain X Latitude wipers, 4 new shocks all around, and timing belt. As with all Isuzus with the 3.2 motor, this one does burn oil; about a quart every 800 miles or so. It's easy to stay on top of though, just a quick check when you fill up with gas. Overall, this is an excellent little SUV for going around in style in the Summer with the top down. It gets good mileage (17-19) and is pretty peppy too with plenty of passing power. A hard top and hitch can be added too, parts are readily available. Don't hesitate to contact me with any questions, or to come take a test drive before you buy. You won't be disappointed! |

Junkyard Gem: 1997 Acura SLX
Tue, Nov 27 2018When I'm prowling wrecking yards, I'm always on the lookout for obscure examples of badge engineering, and the weirder they are, the better I like them. While I haven't managed to spot a junked Suzuki Equator yet, I have photographed such rarities as the Saab 9-2x and Isuzu Ascender. A few weeks ago, I encountered one of the real oddities of the Honda-Isuzu dealmaking of the 1990s: a 1997 Acura SLX, a luxed-up Isuzu Trooper that sold very poorly and is now mostly forgotten today. Plenty of Acura SUVs designed and built entirely by Honda roll out of American showrooms today, but the 1990s SUV boom caught Honda by surprise. The first MDX wasn't ready until the 2001 model year, so Honda made a deal to take Isuzu Troopers, apply wood and leather inside and Acura badges outside, and cash in on North Americans' increasing disdain for minivans, sedans, and station wagons. Americans were very familiar with the Trooper, which was sold here from the middle 1980s until the 2002 model year, when the Chevrolet Trailblazer-based Ascender went on sale. The Isuzu name stuck around on these shores until 2008. The SLX was a decent enough truck, but there was no disguising its proletariat Trooper roots from status-conscious SUV shoppers who wanted to look more oligarchic while conquering a half-inch of snow in the mall parking lot. It didn't help that the 1997 Trooper L listed at $27,800 and the SLX Premium cost $38,300 (that's about $44,200 and $60,900 in inflation-adjusted 2018 bucks). SLX sales started off weak and plummeted after that. After 1999, the SLX was done. I spent years trying to find one in California and Colorado wrecking yards, but the few that were sold seemed to be sturdy enough to stay alive for a couple of decades. Finally, this high-mile '97 appeared in a Denver yard. This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. Manage Settings.
Cars with the most reckless drivers are full of surprises
Wed, Oct 13 2021Insurify is a site for comparing auto insurance quotes. Because insurance shoppers need to submit information like the vehicles they're driving and the infractions they've compiled while driving those vehicles, Insurify has quite the database of correlations tying certain models to a habit of breaking certain laws. When the site's data analysts decided to compile a list of the top ten models for reckless driving citations in the decade from 2010 to 2019, the ranking contained a few wild entries. The Dodge Challenger making the countdown will surprise precisely zero people. But the Saturn L200? First, a definition: USLegal.com defines reckless driving as "driving with a willful or wanton disregard for safety. It is the operation of an automobile under such circumstances and in such a manner as to show a willful or reckless disregard of consequences." So this list is a caution about particular drivers more than the cars. For a baseline, according to Insurify data, for any random model, 15 out of 10,000 people who drive that model have picked up one citation for reckless driving. Back to that Challenger, then. No shocker for being here, but it's actually number 10, with 44 out of 10,000 Challenger drivers nabbed for a willful disregard of consequences on the road. That's better than the first surprise entry, the Saturn L200, a sedan only on sale for six years, with the least horsepower on the list, and out of production since 2005. The data set put drivers of GM's extraterrestrial sedan at 45 reckless pilots per 10,000 drivers. There are two pickups on the list, the only modern one being the Ram 1500 at eighth, with a rate of 46 in 10,000. Somehow, drivers of the third-best-selling pickup in the U.S. outrun the overwhelming numerical superiority of the best-selling vehicle in the States, the Ford F-150. The other pickup is the Chevrolet K1500 at number five, with a rate of 56 in 10,000. This is not only the oldest vehicle on the list, it went out of production in 2002, before any other vehicle on the list. Between the trucks, the Volkswagen CC slotted in at seven with 47 in 10,000 reckless driving chits, the Cadillac ATS slipped into sixth with 48 in 10,000. The top four is a bag of unexpected. The Nissan 370Z is the first hardcore sports car on the list at number four, with 61 in 10,000 Z drivers flaunting their Fairladys in the face of Johnny Law.
Junkyard Gem: 1986 Isuzu I-Mark Hatchback
Wed, Mar 13 2019Thanks to the long global reach of The General's tentacles, Americans looking for economy cars at GM dealerships during the middle 1980s could buy Suzukis (the Chevrolet Sprint), Opels (the Chevrolet Chevette), Daewoos (the Pontiac LeMans), and Isuzus (the Chevrolet Spectrum). Just as Mitsubishi sold Mirages in the United States while Chrysler continued to sell the Mirage's Colt sibling, Isuzu moved in with the new front-wheel-drive I-Mark to compete with its Spectrum twin. These cars weren't big sellers and they didn't last very long on the road, but I managed to find this '86 in a Denver, Colorado, self-service wrecking yard. The I-Mark was known as the Gemini in its Japanese homeland and in Europe; the front-wheel-drive second-generation Gemini debuted in 1985. This one didn't make it to 150,000 miles, unlike most of its Honda, Toyota, and Nissan competitors, but it was pretty cheap when new. The hatchback listed at $7,149 in 1986, dismayingly more than the stripped-down '86 Civic 1.3 hatchback ($5,479) but closer to the similarly equipped Civic DX hatchback ($6,699). If you were really brave that year, you could have purchased a new Hyundai Excel for a mere $4,995. This is the base engine, a 1.5-liter four rated at 70 horsepower. Believe it or not, an I-Mark Turbo was available a year later, and it boasted 110 horses. My favorite thing about 1980s Isuzus is the way the HVAC controls are labeled. You can choose between "wind in your long, feathered hair" and "wind on your high-heeled disco boots" settings here. This car is in very nice shape for a dated econo-commuter from a long-departed brand, considering that it survived for a good 20 years while being worth approximately scrap value. For the very strong owners of decade-old Chevy Vegas, the Isuzu I-Mark seemed like a wise choice. Some of the first appearances of the soon-to-be-legendary Joe Isuzu were in I-Mark ads. Priced at only $9!
