Infiniti's Detroit concept to be 'very, very, very, very close' to new Q60

Fri, Nov 21 2014

Add one more vehicle to the tally of reveals slated for the 2015 Detroit Auto Show. Alfonso Albaisa, executive design director at Infiniti, has confirmed that the marque will be showing a new concept on January 13, the second media day. More importantly, though, this concept won't be another flight of fancy like many of Infiniti's past show cars. Instead, it will foreshadow the arrival of a replacement for one of its oldest vehicles, the Q60, a model better known as the G37 Coupe. "On January 13, you're going to see a concept car that's very, very, very, very close to the next Q60," Albaisa told Motor Trend. There isn't much to go on beyond that, sadly, although we are free to speculate. Infiniti's past would indicate that the Q60 would carry on its role as a two-door version of the Q50 sedan, with styling influenced by its four-door sibling. While that makes sense, there's also an argument to be made for departing from the Q50's styling in favor of a more expressive look that could allow the two-door model to stand out. Whichever avenue Infiniti chooses, we'll have an even better idea in just a few short months.

A look inside Infiniti's variable-compression engine

Thu, Sep 29 2016

We're sympathetic to anyone who had trouble understanding what's going on with Infiniti's new variable-compression engine. While we got a full tech briefing on the novel VC-Turbo back in August, the visual aids were lacking. The cutaway engine Infiniti brought to the Paris show fixes all of that. You can thank the little green and pink lines on the cutaway for making the whole idea a little more clear. Click through the gallery to see two lines – one green and one pink – that represent the different strokes allowing for different compression ratios. Remember, the compression ratio is the amount of volume in the cylinder on intake compared to the amount at the end of the compression stroke. Leave more room at the end and you lower that ratio. The length of the stroke doesn't change with this system, but where it sits along the cylinder does. Hence those two lines. The variable compression ratio allows this new turbocharged engine to maximize fuel economy when the turbo isn't needed by raising the compression ratio. It will see its first use in the next Infiniti QX50 crossover, previewed by the QX Sport Inspiration concept that's also on display in Paris, and has performance targets of 268 horsepower and 288 pound-feet of torque. After, it will migrate to other Infiniti and Nissan vehicles, with transverse front-drive-based applications first in line. Eventually, it's likely to completely replace Nissan's corporate 3.5-liter V6. We'll be poking around the engine a little more in Paris today to try and get some more info. For now, enjoy those cutaway images and those friendly little lines. 2022 Infiniti Q50 adds standard features, drops base trim

Wed, Sep 22 2021

The 2022 Infiniti Q50 is nearly unchanged for the new model year. The only really substantial changes are a couple new interior features. Apple CarPlay can now be used wirelessly, and is standard along with wired Android Auto compatibility. Your streamed tunes also play through a standard Bose 16-speaker sound system. Additionally, all Q50 models come with real leather upholstery, power memory seats and power tilting and telescoping steering column. The trim line-up also gets a tweak. The base Pure trim has been eliminated, leaving just three trim levels: Luxe, Sensory and Red Sport 400. Engine and drivetrain options are the same, with the standard engine being a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 making 300 horsepower. The Red Sport 400 gets a 400-horsepower version of the engine along with brake and suspension upgrades. Both engines use a seven-speed automatic transmission and can be paired with rear- or all-wheel drive. With the loss of the Pure trim, the base price has naturally jumped. The new starting point is the $43,125 Luxe, which is also $300 more than last year's Luxe. The Sensory starts at $48,825, and the Red Sport 400 starts at $56,975, each trim costing $100 more than last year. The 2022 Q50 models will arrive at dealers this month.
