South Korea island of Jeju becoming an EV-incentive heaven
Tue, Apr 1 2014When it comes to providing some island EV love, we can point to Hawaii, which has been pushing hard for greater electric-vehicle adoption through subsidies and a broader charging network. Now, South Korea has Jeju. We're not sure if the surf is as good. Like Hawaii, Jeju is focusing on a "carbon-free" existence and lowered fossil-fuel dependency as a way to help the environment while addressing the extra expenses involved in providing fuel locally, Wards Auto says. Jeju, which is about 720 square miles, provides about $7,000 worth of EV incentives on top of those provided by the South Korean government. As a result, the cost of buying an EV can be cut in half. In the case of a Chevrolet Spark EV, going electric actually has a lower out-of-pocket price tag than buying a gas-powered counterpart on the island. South Korea's Ministry of Environment has earmarked about $14,000 in subsidies for each EV purchase, while 10 South Korean cities are adding on incentives anywhere from about $2,800 to $7,400 per vehicle. South Korean automaker Hyundai and affiliate Kia are just starting to do their part to boost the country's EV sales, which didn't even break the 800-unit mark last year. Kia recently said it will start making its 2015 model-year Soul EV in April, with sales debuting in South Korea by the end of the year. Hyundai is said to start selling its own EV starting in 2016. Hyundai Elantra snags IIHS Top Safety Pick+
Thu, Jul 28 2016The refreshed Hyundai Elantra has just earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's ( IIHS) highest award – the Top Safety Pick+. Now in its sixth generation, the new Elantra's crash test rating is a large improvement over the previous model's, which didn't earn the prestigious award due to getting a rating of "acceptable" in the small front overlap test. The good rating – the best rating possible – only applies to 2017 models built after March, as the vehicles have stronger bodies and a modified front airbag. The Elantra also has an available front crash prevention system, which is a requirement for cars to qualify as a Top Safety Pick+. In order for a vehicle to qualify as a Top Safety Pick+, it must score a rating of good in the moderate overlap front, small overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraint tests. The car must also offer a front crash prevention system that has to earn either an advanced or superior rating. Here it is, Hyundai's headlining Super Bowl commercial
Fri, 01 Feb 2013Hyundai has ponied up for five commercials to play in, around and after the Super Bowl on Sunday, and it's slowly been releasing them one by one this week to attract as much attention as possible to these expensive ads. You've stuck with us through the first four, and we've got one last ad from Hyundai, its headliner, to show you.
Called Epic PlayDate, the ad's big hook is alt-rock band The Flaming Lips, who not only appear in the ad, but also wrote a new track called Sun Blows Up Today just for the spot. The track is available on iTunes as a single today, and will be a bonus track on their new album called Terror, which comes out in April.
The commercial is meant to sell something, and that something is the new three-row Santa Fe crossover. It follows a day in the life of a family with kids who do all sorts of crazy things, and we're told by Hyundai that the activities in which they partake pay homage to "signature band references" of The Flaming Lips.
