Hyundai, Kia expanding plug-in vehicle line-up in Korea

Thu, Jan 30 2014

Hyundai is shedding a bit of light on its electric vehicle plans. About time, too, since the company has spend a long period being quite vague about plugging in while touting its hydrogen plans. The Hyundai and Kia brands will both release their first plug-in hybrid vehicles next year in Korea; an all-electric version of the Kia Soul will roll out in May of this year and a mid-size electric vehicle will be launched as early as next year. Test versions of the Hyundai i10 electric vehicle have been on Korean roads since first being used at the G20 summit in Seoul in 2010. There have been hints about an electrified Hyundai coming to America, and at the Washington Auto Show last week, Michael O'Brien, vice president of corporate and product planning for Hyundai Motor America told AutoblogGreen that a new EV will be coming to the US market sometime within the next three years. A Hyundai executive told Korean national daily The Chosunilbo that the company will be significantly increasing its investment in hybrids and EVs to roll out a few eco-friendly models starting in 2015. It's hard to say which of these might come to the US market – a new LF Sonata will be coming out in both a regular gasoline and hybrid system in Korea; the US already has the Sonata Hybrid for sale. As for plug-in hybrids, Hyundai said that there will be both Sonata and Kia K5 (Optima) models coming out next year. These will also be the first-ever plug-in hybrids in the Korean market. A new Hyundai Accent arrives next week with baby Elantra styling

Fri, Feb 10 2017

The teaser video above doesn't leave much to the imagination, giving us a very good look at the shape and some details of the 2018 Hyundai Accent sedan. But this is all we get until the car is fully revealed at the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto on Thursday, February 16. From the flashes of light and silhouettes, it's apparent the new subcompact Accent sedan will take pretty much all of its cues from the compact Elantra, which itself was updated for 2017. The Elantra, in turn, looks like a combination of about three other cars, but it manages to blend those designs in a handsome way. Its almost fastback design, LED lighting signature, and hexagonal grille all appear to carry over to the new Accent. We expect Hyundai to continue to offer a five-door Accent hatchback in this next generation as well. As for the interior, we expect a similar complement of new features, like infotainment with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay functionality and some new safety systems. Mechanicals are likely to be very similar to what's available on the Accent today, which means a relatively efficient four-cylinder, probably again displacing 1.6 liters and making about 140 horsepower. We'll of course bring you all the details once the car is revealed next week. Related Video:

Hyundai reportedly eyeing a takeover of FCA

Fri, Jun 29 2018

The CEO of Hyundai Motor Group plans to launch a takeover bid for Fiat Chrysler ahead of the planned retirement of FCA Chief Executive Sergio Marchionne next spring, Asia Times reports, citing unnamed sources close the situation. CEO Chung Mong-koo will wait for an expected decline in the Italian-American automaker's shares to make his move. Hyundai isn't commenting on the rumors, unsurprisingly, but would presumably stand to benefit by gaining Chrysler's dealer network and the lucrative Jeep brand and probably Ram, too. An FCA spokeswoman in Auburn Hills told Autoblog the company had no comment. But like any story about a possible takeover, this one gets complicated with inside players — and President Trump's posturing on international trade issues. FCA has been the subject of takeover interest before, including by Hyundai, but Marchionne has denied a merger was likely, instead saying his company was in talks with the Korean automaker about a technical partnership. In 2015, Marchionne lobbied General Motors hard, but unsuccessfully, for a tie-up; he was also spurned by Volkswagen. Marchionne had repeatedly stressed the need for car companies to merge to decrease overcapacity and better afford the massive investments needed for things like autonomous and electric vehicles. In the case of Hyundai's reported interest, there is a cast of characters. One is Paul Singer, principal of the hedge fund Elliott Management, an activist shareholder with a $1 billion stake in Hyundai and a major owner of equities in Fiat's home turf of Italy. Then there is FCA Chairman John Elkann, who reportedly disagrees with Marchionne on a successor as CEO of Fiat Chrysler but has little interest in running the company himself and would prefer a merger. Compounding things is what the Trump administration would think of a further blending of Fiat Chrysler's international DNA, though a deal with a Korean automaker is thought to be more palatable to the president and members of Congress than by a Chinese conglomerate like Great Wall Motor, which has confirmed its interest in taking over all or parts of FCA.
