Quality issues drive resignation of Hyundai R&D president

Hyundai released a statement Monday announcing that its research and development president, Kwon Moon-sik, and two other executives resigned from their positions, Reuters reports, to "take responsibility for a series of quality issues," according to the statement.
The resignations seem to be related to recent recalls around the globe. A few weeks back, Hyundai recalled 27,500 Genesis sedans from model years 2009 to 2012 in the US for brake fluid that doesn't prevent corrosion of the electronic hydraulic control unit. The recall recently was expanded to include 43,500 Genesis sedans in the US, but nearly 150,000 are reportedly affected including the South Korean market.
"The latest personnel change shows our firm commitment to quality management and reaffirms our will to continuously improve R&D competitiveness," says Hyundai.

Hyundai preps an off-road shredder for SEMA

Hyundai is teaming with Rockstar Performance Garage to bring a nitrous-powered Santa Fe to the SEMA Show later this month. It will share space with the Hyundai's collaboration with tuner Bisimoto, which spawned a wicked 1,040-horsepower rear-wheel drive Santa Fe. Where the Bisimoto concept was all about on-road performance, this new Santa Fe was built to handle the trails. It starts with the basic, 3.3-liter V6 Hyundai Santa Fe. Rockstar then thoroughly re-worked the crossover, adding an AEM cold air intake, Mishimoto cooling system, and a nitrous-oxide injection system. Big R1 six-piston front and four-piston rear brakes were also fitted along with King coilovers up front and shocks in the rear. Much of the rest of the suspension is custom, including tie-rods and control arms. Rockstar also added 17-inch KMC XD 301 Turbine bead-lock wheels wrapped in Mickey Thompson Baja Claw 35-inch off-road tires. The engine exhales through a custom Magnaflow exhaust. The Santa Fe also gets bespoke bumpers and rock-sliders. A Warn winch, Bulldog LED lighting, and a roof rack add style and function to the exterior. Hyundai looking to add plant in Mexico

Mexico is rapidly becoming the go-to place for North American auto production, and companies including Toyota, General Motors, and Audi are all building new plants, expanding or shifting some production there. Now, Hyundai is investigating joining them in the future. "I'm sure that over the years we'll see production of Hyundai products in Mexico," Pedro Albarran, managing director for the automaker in Mexico, said to Bloomberg. Albarran indicates that a likely location for such a factory might be the state of Nuevo Leon, where Kia also has a forthcoming $1 billion plant. The site would be an ideal location near suppliers. It's probably going to be a while before any of Hyundai's models start coming out of Mexico. According to Bloomberg, the automaker wants to wait to make a final decision until sales there reach around 50,000 annual units, and that benchmark isn't expected until 2018. While Kia's plant is slated to have a capacity around 300,000 vehicles a year when it opens in 2016, Albarran thinks Hyundai might start smaller at just over 100,000 annual examples. Some of those would likely include subcompact models for the Mexican market. The Korean automaker was rumored to be looking into a factory south of the border as far back as 2013.
