Hyundai gives 3 millionth Elantra in America to hurricane hero near Houston (Update)

Correction: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that the car given to Henry Rogers was the 3 millionth Hyundai in America. It was actually the 3 millionth Elantra in America. The text has been updated to reflect the correct information. Hyundai has just crossed a significant milestone in its history. Since the company's Elantra compact sedan was introduced to the American market back in 1991, the company has now sold the 3 millionth example here. The 3 millionth car is a normal Elantra sedan, a handsome, competent car that we don't find to be terribly exciting unless it's the Sport model with the turbo engine. But we're certain the owners of this new Elantra are pretty excited regardless. See, Hyundai didn't exactly sell the 3 millionth American Elantra. It donated it to Henry Rogers, a paramedic field supervisor in Baytown, Texas, near Houston. His town was pummeled by Hurricane Harvey, and he was out helping people for two days straight. Unfortunately, while he was out helping the citizens of Baytown, his family's home was being swallowed up by water. Neighbors came by to rescue his wife, three adopted kids, and three dogs. Everyone came out all right, but the house and its contents were lost. So for Rogers' contribution to the town, and for everything his family lost, Hyundai saw fit to get them started on the right foot with a fresh car, and a fairly historic one no less. Hyundai cranks the Tucson to 700 hp for SEMA

The annual SEMA Show doesn't kick off in Las Vegas until Nov. 3, but Hyundai is getting an early start by teasing another collaboration with the talented tuners at Bisimoto Engineering. Following up on their high-performance takes on the Sonata, Genesis Coupe, and Elantra GT of past years, the attention turns to the Tucson. Now that the crossover packs over 700 horsepower, Bisimoto prefers to describe it as a "Brute Ute." To crank that much power out of a Tucson, the tuners perform quite a long list of modifications to Hyundai's 2.4-liter Theta-II four-cylinder. Among them, the mill gets strengthened internal parts, a new cam, high-boost turbo, and updated management system. Bisimoto then routes the grunt through a six-speed manual gearbox. The tuners match the massive power with an appropriately wild look. Up front, the normal grille is gone, and now all that's visible is a massive intercooler. The blue Tucson also hunkers low over 19-inch wheels thanks to a custom air suspension, and bigger brakes should help slow things down at high speed. The interior also gets outfitted with an upgraded stereo, and there's now a roll cage in there, too. While only being shown currently in the sketch above, we expect to get all the angles at SEMA in November. Hyundai recalls Santa Fe Sport for seatbelt warning light

The Basics: Hyundai will recall 34,200 examples of the 2016 and 2017 Santa Fe Sport with production dates between September 1, 2015 and February 12, 2016. The Problem: The front seats' height adjuster mechanism can damage the wiring that controls the seatbelt warning. If this occurs, then owners wouldn't get an audible reminder to buckle up. The problem puts the vehicles out of compliance Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard. The Fix: Dealers will inspect and reroute the wires to the proper location If You Own One: Hyundai will begin the recall on May 6. In the affected vehicles, the wires in the front seat belt buckle harnesses may be damaged by the seat's height adjuster mechanism, resulting in a failure to provide an audible warning when front seat occupants do not fasten their seat belts. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection." CONSEQUENCE: Without a warning to remind the front seat occupants that their seat belts are not buckled, they may forget to buckle their seat belt, increasing their risk of injury in the event of a crash. REMEDY: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and reroute the wires in the front seat belt buckle harnesses to their proper locations, as necessary, free of charge.
