2019 Hyundai Santa Fe shows off in four video teasers

Hyundai is ready to turn the lights on the 2019 Santa Fe, and in at least one case, that's the literal state of affairs. The PR folks at the carmaker's Korean HQ released four teaser videos, one of them a commercial demonstrating a few of the tech bits in the coming crossover such as Safe Exit Assist. That driver aid notifies occupants about to exit the vehicle when there's another vehicle approaching from behind, and will temporarily lock the doors to keep passengers from wrecking doors, vehicles, or themselves. The other three vids highlight details throughout the Santa Fe's brand new bodywork, one of them devoted to the fourth-generation vehicle's lighting signatures. When Hyundai goes totally public with the crossover on February 21, we look forward to finding out which lights do what. Beyond that, we'll look to see if this split design lasts longer than the related aesthetic on the resurrected Jeep Cherokee. Elsewhere on the Santa Fe, we see there'll be multicolored digital dash gauges, the option of quilted seat inserts, and a set of dual rectangular exhaust tips. Hyundai's managed to keep most of the Santa Fe's secrets ... secret, but we do know the 2019 model brings a larger footprint and more interior room. Tech goodies should include Rear Cross-Traffic Alert with integrated automatic braking, a Rear Occupant Alert that reminds a departing driver not to forget any precious cargo in the back seat, and some semi-autonomous assistance features. There have also been rumors that Hyundai will do more with this model to differentiate the three-row version from the two-row Santa Fe Sport. 2015 Hyundai Azera is refreshed, may still be on life support

What you see above is the 2015 Hyundai Azera. It's slightly refreshed for the new model year, with a new grille, lighting elements and fascia joining some newly standard technology bits inside the cabin. Other than those few updates, this is the same Azera we've known and loved since its most recent redesign for the 2012 model year. Thing is, we're not sure if the Azera will actually live past 2015 here in the United States. Hyundai has said that it still sees some space above the Sonata midsize sedan and its larger and more luxurious Genesis Sedan for a vehicle sized and priced like the Azera, but just hasn't been able to find many buyers who agree. Put simply, if you like what you see in the 2015 Azera, now would be a good time to mosey on over to your nearest Hyundai dealer to see if this fullsize sedan suits your specific needs better than competitors like the Chevy Impala, Toyota Avalon and Buick LaCrosse.

Hyundai, Kia earmark $760 million to settle U.S. lawsuits over engine fires

SEOUL — Hyundai and affiliate Kia have earmarked 900 billion won ($758 million) to settle U.S. class action litigation and address engine-related issues including fires and failures in the United States and South Korea. The move marks the South Korean auto giant's first major effort to resolve years of trouble over engine defects that have also sparked probes by the U.S. safety regulator and prosecutors. Hyundai Motor will make a provision of about 600 billion won in its July to September earnings while Kia will book one for about 300 billion won, they said on Friday. Hyundai and Kia said in a statement that under the U.S. settlement they would install software to monitor for symptoms of engine failure and take other steps, including offering compensation options and lifetime warranties. A total of 4.17 million Hyundai and Kia models equipped with Theta II gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines, which were sold in naturally aspirated 2.0-liter and 2.4-liter displacements, and had a turbocharged derivative, will be affected by the U.S. settlement. Hyundai and Kia, together the world's fifth-biggest automaker by sales, recalled nearly 1.7 million vehicles in the United States to address the possibility of engine fires. In November, Reuters reported that U.S. federal prosecutors had launched a criminal investigation to determine if the recalls had been conducted properly. Since 2017, the U.S. safety regulator has been investigating whether the recalls covered enough vehicles and were conducted in a timely manner. The investigation comes after Kim Gwang-ho, then an engineer at Hyundai, flew to Washington in 2016 to tell the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) the companies should have recalled more vehicles over the problem, citing an internal report. Hyundai Motor at that time denied allegations. The NHTSA this year opened a fresh investigation into 3 million Hyundai and Kia vehicles after reviewing reports of more than 3,000 fires that injured more than 100 people. That probe came in response to a petition seeking an investigation filed in June by the nonprofit Center for Auto Safety.
