Hyundai Sonata PHEV will go 27 miles on electric power

The Hyundai Sonata Plug-in Hybrid will have an all-electric range of 27 miles. That will make it the second-highest among US plug-in hybrids, after the Chevrolet Volt. The Volt is technically an extended-range plug-in, according to Chevy, but we feel fine comparing the two here. Either way, the Hyundai beats out the 19-mile all-electric range of Ford's two plug-in hybrids and the paltry 11 miles of the Prius Plug In. The good news is that the Sonata's numbers are a bit better than previously expected. The plug-in hybrid was forecast to be able to go 24 miles on electricity alone. The Sonata PHEV also delivers 202 but, though, as well all know, range drops precipitously if you're shooting to use all of them horses at once. The seventh-generation Sonata body style is also sleeker and delivers better aerodynamics. No word on how much the PHEV will cost yet, but it will go on sale in the US this fall. And while the Sonata PHEV will technically available for Hyundai dealers to stock in all 50 states, if you live outside of California or the nine states that follow its zero-emissions vehicles rules, you will need to special order the vehicle. Based on the US Department of Energy's Fueleconomy.gov site, the Sonata PHEV's miles-per-gallon-equivalent rating of 99 beats out that of the Ford Fusion Energi and C-Max PHEVs but trails the Chevrolet Volt's. Again, the Sonata came in with better numbers than we previously thought, as it was expected to have a 93 MPGe rating. You can read our First Drive of the Sonata Plug-in Hybrid here. Next Hyundai Elantra GT hatchback previewed by i30 teaser

The Elantra GT hatchback looked a bit neglected after its sedan sibling was introduced last year. That said, the Elantra hatchbacks have historically been released after the sedan, and usually had significant differences between the two body styles. Based on this latest teaser from Hyundai, the hatchback will continue its unique streak. The teaser is officially for the European i30, but the i30 and Elantra hatchbacks have been the same vehicles since the late 2000s. There's also no sign of the American version being dropped or deviating from its European twin, so it seems a safe bet that this newest i30 will come here with the Elantra name. Hyundai does make it clear that this car was made with Europe in mind though, since both the press release and video tout the fact that all of the styling and development work was done in Europe. Peter Schreyer, lead designer for the Hyundai group, says this car is "the next step to how Hyundai design should be." So look for key design elements like the "cascading grille" to appear in future Hyundai vehicles. Speaking of design elements, we can actually spot a decent amount of them in the teaser image and video. The grille extends down the front of the bumper in a similar fashion to the sedan. Overall, the shape of the car looks more formal and upright than the steeply raked design of the current model. In addition, the sheet metal appears to be much less busy, with far fewer swoops and lines. The car will be fully revealed on September 7 just before the Paris Motor Show. Related Video:

Hyundai preps an off-road shredder for SEMA

Hyundai is teaming with Rockstar Performance Garage to bring a nitrous-powered Santa Fe to the SEMA Show later this month. It will share space with the Hyundai's collaboration with tuner Bisimoto, which spawned a wicked 1,040-horsepower rear-wheel drive Santa Fe. Where the Bisimoto concept was all about on-road performance, this new Santa Fe was built to handle the trails. It starts with the basic, 3.3-liter V6 Hyundai Santa Fe. Rockstar then thoroughly re-worked the crossover, adding an AEM cold air intake, Mishimoto cooling system, and a nitrous-oxide injection system. Big R1 six-piston front and four-piston rear brakes were also fitted along with King coilovers up front and shocks in the rear. Much of the rest of the suspension is custom, including tie-rods and control arms. Rockstar also added 17-inch KMC XD 301 Turbine bead-lock wheels wrapped in Mickey Thompson Baja Claw 35-inch off-road tires. The engine exhales through a custom Magnaflow exhaust. The Santa Fe also gets bespoke bumpers and rock-sliders. A Warn winch, Bulldog LED lighting, and a roof rack add style and function to the exterior. Inside, passengers get new leather pieces and a Kicker audio system. Related Video:
