Hyundai recalls 43k Genesis and Equus models for faulty lighting
Tue, Dec 9 2014As you can imagine, it'd be a bit of a problem if the brake lights on your car didn't work. And that, unfortunately, is precisely the problem that Hyundai has found with some of its higher-end offerings, prompting the Korean automaker to issue a recall. (One of a great many recalls issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration today, as you can no doubt see.) The problem apparently revolves around a failure in the circuit that's supposed to illuminate the taillights when the driver hits the brakes. If that doesn't work, of course, the vehicle behind would be more likely to crash into the Hyundai in question. As a result, Hyundai is recalling precisely 42,925 units, split between the 2009-2011 Genesis (manufactured between April 30, 2008, and November 21, 2010) and the 2011 Equus (manufactured between July 31, 2010 and November 21, 2010). Owners of those vehicles will be notified to bring their vehicles in to have their brake light circuits repaired. RECALL Subject : Inoperative Stop Lamps Report Receipt Date: NOV 07, 2014 NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V713000 Component(s): EXTERIOR LIGHTING Potential Number of Units Affected: 42,925 Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor America SUMMARY: Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2009-2011 Hyundai Genesis vehicles manufactured April 30, 2008, to November 21, 2010, and 2011 Hyundai Equus vehicles manufactured July 31, 2010, to November 21, 2010. Due to a circuit failure, the stop lamps in the affected vehicles may not illuminate. CONSEQUENCE: A following vehicle may not recognize that the vehicle is slowing or coming to a stop if the stop lamps on the vehicle do not illuminate as expected. There is an increased risk of a rear-end crash as a result. REMEDY: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will repair the stop lamp switch circuit, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-714-865-3920. Hyundai's number for this recall is 125. NOTES: Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
Albert Biermann, the man behind some of Hyundai's sportiest cars, retires
Fri, Dec 17 2021Hyundai Motor Group, which includes Kia and Genesis, made big news by announcing at the end of 2014 that it was bringing on Albert Biermann to its research and development division. He had spent just over 30 years at BMW and was in charge of the M division before he left. His time at Hyundai led to some of the company's best driving cars, which meet or beat the global competition. But now, the company has announced Biermann is retiring. At 65 years old, it's not entirely surprising that Biermann would be looking at retirement, and he seems to be leaving on good terms. "Korea will remain as my second home, and all of my colleagues at Hyundai Motor Group will always be considered part of my family. I would like to recognize that our success has always been based on the strong collective spirit of the many talented people at Hyundai, and I will value our unique achievements wherever I live," he said in a release from Hyundai. Fortunately, Biermann will still be an Executive Technical Advisor for the company. Specifically, he'll be advising on electrified performance cars. We say fortunately, because Biermann has been so involved in some of the company's best cars. He helped make the company's rear-drive-based cars such as the Kia Stinger and Genesis models so fun to drive. He also helped setup Hyundai's N sub-brand, and the N models are among the best sport compacts in the world. Assuming Hyundai has taken to heart many things from Biermann, and with his continued advising, the company should still be in a good position. Related video: This content is hosted by a third party. Hyundai is showing a walking pod robot car for CES
Thu, Jan 3 2019Appropriate to its proximity to Area 51, CES 2019 is bringing out the sci-fi side of Hyundai. For this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, which has quickly become one of the most important auto shows in the world, Hyundai ideated a multi-terrain pod that uses legs attached to wheels. It's called Elevate. This is one of the first ideas we have seen from Hyundai CRADLE, the Center for Robotic-Augmented Design in Living Experiences. Formerly Hyundai Ventures, CRADLE was formed for venture capital, collaboration with startups, and concept development, with investments focusing on robotic and intelligent systems, eco-friendly technologies, mobility, materials and manufacturing technology, and concept vehicles. The Elevate incorporates numerous aspects of these goals with a concept vehicle that incorporates robotics and electric mobility. In the photo here, it is shown in potential application for search and rescue missions. Because the pod uses wheels and robotic legs together, it can cross rugged terrain and even climb obstacles. Oddly, though, we wonder why something that heavy is depicted on top of rubble where they seem to be searching for survivors. Maybe that area has already been cleared. Hyundai hasn't offered specs or details on Elevate yet. It might at full launch, but it appears the Elevate runs on battery power and is about as tall as the workers. Stay tuned for more info in the coming week. Related Video:
