Hyundai will open up some hydrogen fuel cell patents in Korea

Last year, Tesla made its electric vehicle patents open source. Last month, Toyota did the same with some of its hydrogen fuel cell patents. Now, Hyundai is going to let some Korean companies get access to the automaker's patents as parts of a innovation center project in Gwangju, South Korea. Just Auto reports that about 1,000 "unused patents" belonging to Kia and Hyundai will be made available to participants in a new automotive start-up hub. There will be 12 of these hubs in Korea, not all focused on hydrogen fuel cells. Hyundai said that it will help raise $164 million to help turn Gwangju in a center for eco-friendly industry. Phil Floraday, Hyundai Motor America manager of Midwest Product Public Relations, told AutoblogGreen that, "The main purpose of the patents mentioned in the story will be to nurture small- and medium-sized businesses in the Gwangju area. While we cannot clarify all the patents at this time, we can tell you that they are not entirely focused on FCEV or eco-friendly patents only." US expands probe into ZF-TRW airbag failure-to-deploy to 12.3 million vehicles

DETROIT — U.S. auto safety regulators have expanded an investigation into malfunctioning airbag controls to include 12.3 million vehicles because the bags may not inflate in a crash. The problem could be responsible for as many as eight deaths. Vehicles made by Toyota, Honda, Kia, Hyundai, Mitsubishi and Fiat Chrysler from the 2010 through 2019 model years are included in the probe, which was revealed Tuesday in documents posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It involves airbag control units made by ZF-TRW that were installed in the vehicles. The control units can fail in a crash, possibly because of unwanted electrical signals produced by the crash itself that can disable an air bag control circuit housed in the passenger compartment, according to NHTSA documents. The electrical signals can damage the control circuit, the documents say. ZF, a German auto parts maker which acquired TRW Automotive in 2015, said in a statement that it's committed to safety and is cooperating with NHTSA and automakers in the investigation. The case is another in a long list of problems with auto industry airbags, including faulty and potentially deadly Takata airbag inflators. At least 24 people have been killed worldwide and more than 200 injured by the inflators, which can explode with too much force and hurl dangerous shrapnel into the passenger cabin. The inflators touched off the largest series of automotive recalls in U.S. history involving with as many as 70 million inflators to be recalled by the end of next year. About 100 million inflators are to be recalled worldwide. On April 19, NHTSA upgraded the ZF-TRW probe from a preliminary evaluation to an engineering analysis, which is a step closer toward seeking recalls. So far, only Hyundai and Kia and Fiat Chrysler have issued recalls in the case. Four deaths that may have been caused by the problem were reported in Hyundai-Kia vehicles and three in Fiat Chrysler automobiles. NHTSA opened an investigation in March of 2017 involving the TRW parts in Hyundais and Kias. The upgrade came after investigators found two recent serious crashes involving 2018 and 2019 Toyota Corollas in which the airbags did not inflate. One person was killed. Jason Levine, executive director of the Center for Auto Safety, a nonprofit consumer group, said the ZF-TRW case shows the auto industry thus far has learned very little from Takata.

Hyundai reveals a fourth, autonomous flavor of Ioniq

Hyundai added a fourth variant of the Ioniq line at this year's Los Angeles auto show, but this one isn't headed for production just yet. It's an autonomous concept that Hyundai is using to develop affordable, integrated hardware and software. Integrating all the hardware is something Hyundai is quite proud of, particularly the positioning of the lidar system in the front bumper. Hyundai says moving the lidar gear to the bumper allows the Ioniq "to look like any other car on the road and not a high school science project." We wonder if that statement was directed to Ford and its autonomous Fusion prototypes. The three lidar sensors are combined with a variety of other systems aboard the autonomous Ioniq. A number of the sensors are already going to be installed on production Ioniqs, including the radar for the car's Smart Cruise Control and the lane-keep assist cameras. The car's blind-spot radar will also be used for lane changes. Hyundai says by using these existing parts, implementing autonomous technology should be simpler and cheaper. These standard Ioniq sensors are all supplemented with a GPS antenna, high-definition mapping data, and a three-camera system installed just behind the windshield for detecting pedestrians, lane markings, and traffic signals. The car isn't just for show either. Hyundai has three of the autonomous Ioniqs testing in South Korea, alongside a pair of autonomous hydrogen fuel cell Tucsons. The company will also bring two autonomous Ioniqs to the 2017 Consumer Electronic Show. The cars will be there to give rides to the media.
