Biden says U.S. is willing to continue talks with South Korea on EV subsidy
Wed, Oct 5 2022SEOUL — President Joe Biden has expressed willingness to continue talks with South Korea over recent U.S. legislation that denies subsidies to most foreign makers of electric vehicles (EVs), an official from Yoon's office said on Wednesday. Biden gave the assurance in a letter to South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol, who had asked the U.S. president last month for help to allay Seoul's concerns that the new U.S. rules would hurt South Korea's automakers. "We assess that President Biden reaffirmed his understanding of our concerns through a personally signed letter .... it shows Biden's willingness to be considerate towards South Korean companies in the future," the official said. The Inflation Reduction Act, signed by Biden in August, requires EVs assembled in North America to qualify for tax credits in the United States, but excluded Hyundai Motor Co and its affiliate Kia Corp from EV subsidies, as they do not yet make the vehicles there. As a result, only about 20 EVs qualify for subsidies under the new rules. Related video: This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. Manage Settings. Hyundai Sonata successor to seek evolution, not revolution
Mon, 08 Apr 2013Hyundai hit a home run with its current-generation Sonata midsize sedan, so don't expect the Korean automaker to make revolutionary changes when its replacement comes out for the 2015 model year. The four-door sitting in showrooms today was launched in 2010 with radical new lines that marked a big departure from its rather bland predecessor. Even with stiff competition from the Honda Accord, Ford Fusion and Toyota Camry - all newer designs than the Sonata - sales have been strong. Consumers embraced its new design language, taking home a record 230,605 units last year.
"I think we found a design language that works, the 'Fluidic Sculpture' stuff, so I would say (the new styling) is not pulling back in any way. It's more continuing to refine on that same trajectory that we're on," John Krafcik, Hyundai U.S. CEO, told WardsAuto in a recent interview. Consumers don't seem to be fazed by the its age either. "A lot of consumers are just entering (the) midsize (segment) for the first time. They don't see (the Sonata) as a three-year-old car. They see it as, 'Whoa, that's a pretty good-looking midsize car,' so it's doing quite well," added Krafcik.
Sonota sales have been down over the last few months, but Krafcik says that is a reflection of the automaker's decision to increase production of its Elantra compact at the Montgomery, Alabama, plant - where both are built - and a limited supply of its mid-grade GLS Sonata model.
Autoblog sell-it-yourself highlight: 2012 Hyundai Genesis
Wed, Apr 12 2017It was a business model established some 25 years earlier by Honda. The Japanese carmarker was looking for a way to profit from loyal Honda owners wanting to move upscale, but not willing to move out of Honda's orbit. The launch of Acura and two models – the upscale Legend and accessible Integra – did the trick. In the past five years, Korean carmaker Hyundai has been attempting to make its own move upmarket with its Genesis sedan and, more recently, the Genesis brand. In 2012, it was the Genesis coupe and 4-door; the coupe enjoyed an Infiniti-like vibe, while the sedan had a whiff of Mercedes in its sheetmetal and value in its window sticker. Available with V6 or V8 power and prices in the low $40s to low $50s, the Genesis four-door represented bargain luxury in an America gripped by recession. Today, a pre-owned Genesis, like our example here, extends the value argument. If this Genesis has a V8, the price point is spot-on for an example in excellent condition. If, however, it's equipped with a V6, we'd hope the seller is flexible. Related Video: Hyundai Car Buying Used Car Buying Ownership Sedan
