A Stainless Magnaflow exhaust, and much more. AS SEEN IN TRUCKIN MAGAZINE 2003 High Mighty H2This Hummer Delivers the GoodsIn stock format, the GM Hummer H2 is an imposing vehicle. With the ability to travel through streams 20 inches deep, climb 16-inch steps and rocks, and paddle through deep sand, the H2 offers capabilities far and beyond the means of mere mortal SUVs. The H2's power is also impressive, with 315 hp and 360 lb-ft of torque on tap, enough to run down anything fleeing from its path. And this predator is designed to intimidate, with an aggressive boxy body, straight windshield and windows, and a brawny and broad front and side design. Order the H2 in its bright-yellow paint scheme, and you'll definitely garner attention wherever you travel. Is this enough to qualify for the cover of Truckin's SUV? Well, being an aftermarket-driven publication, we prefer that the retina-attraction quotient be as high as possible. Lucky for us, Manny de Encio, the owner of CTL Motorsports, and the builder and owner of the awesome '03 H2 featured here, agrees. After one look at this in-your-face beast, we're sure you'll second our choice of this issue's cover vehicle. Lifted to the stars, sporting a bevy of exterior refinement pieces, powered by numerous performance upgrades, and with an interior that is as dynamic as it is comfortable, this H2 certainly qualifies for a starring role. The first time we laid eyes on this bright-and-brawny beast was several months ago at CTL Motorsports' shop in Westminster, California. Manny had invited us over to check out the modified H2, which was in the midst of its final aftermarket tweaks. We were immediately floored by this dynamic ride and made plans for a cover shoot as soon as the vehicle was completed. We ran into Manny later at the Las Vegas Truckin' Nationals, where he wowed spectators and vendors alike with his impressive ride. In fact, we presented Manny with the Truckin's SUV Editor's Choice Award for the best SUV at the show. Interestingly enough, this is one of our few cover vehicles that still sports the stock paint. In our eyes, the yellow OEM hue is perfect for the H2, and in this case, it's nicely set off by an impressive array of exterior aftermarket pieces. However, when you view this vehicle for the first time, your initial impression is that of height. This H2 definitely reaches for the heavens, accomplished by a 14-inch suspension kit and 44-inch tires. The extensive suspension modifications include the Bulletproof lift kit, 2.0 Fox Racing Shox shocks with reservoirs, billet shock clamps, and stainless steel brake lines. The suspension pieces are completely chromed, with the frame painted to match the color of the H2. All of the suspension work was expertly carried out by CTL Motorsports. The huge and impressive wheel and tire combo is made up of 16.5x12-inch Weld Racing Mountain Crushers wheels wrapped by mega-rubber in the form of tires measuring 44x19.5x16.5 inches. Also grabbing your attention is the multitude of exterior body refinement in the form of billet pieces, uses of carbon fiber, painted-to-match components, and fabricated add-ons. These include a custom billet grille, rear bumper billet trim, billet covers over the rear taillights, side marker and rear roof lights trimmed out in billet, and billet pull handles to open the front door. All of these pieces were supplied by B-Cool Billets. Additionally, all plastic trim pieces were sanded and painted to match the H2's yellow hue by Santini Paint and Body Werks in Westminster, California. Other body mods include Kodiak Sidewinder electric steps, an American Outfitters stainless steel wraparound front bumper to replace the plastic factory piece, Hummer H2 Bi-Xenon projector headlights with stage-two bulbs from HIDS-4Less, an electric billet gas cap door from Profit, and an array of LED lighting with controllers by Varad. Setting everything off is a carbon-fiber hoodscoop and hood caps from Kasad. Chrome-plating is also abundant and was provided by Anaheim Plating. The H2's 6.0L V-8 powerplant also benefits from a number of aftermarket pieces, including a Volant cool air intake and mass airflow sensor, and a Nology Hot Wire ignition set and Beru spark plugs provide a sparkier spark. A stainless after-cat exhaust system from MagnaFlow takes care of spent exhaust gases, and the drivelines have been reworked by J.E. Reel. To beef up braking chores, a set of Power Slot rotors were also added to the mix. Step into the interior of the H2 and you're greeted by more aftermarket wizardry, the most impressive of which is a dazzling audio/video system. For style and comfort, the H2 was turned over to the crew at Gomez Custom Upholstery, in Walnut, California, where they applied their solid expertise. The headliner is stitched in black suede, and the H2's seats are stitched in black suede with special designer touches. The dash and console trim are painted in black lacquer, and the pillar posts and speaker enclosures are stitched up in tan leather. The real stars of the interior show, however, are the audio and video components. Orchestrating the entire system is a Panasonic CQ-DS8024 Ghost Face head unit, which sends signals to a four-pack of Crossfire amps -- two VR1000D 1,000-watt units and two VR404 four-channel 400-watt amps. Crossfire crossover units in the front and rear are also included in the mix. The tunes are played from four Crossfire component sets -- mids and tweeters -- located in the front and rear doors. Four ED 312D Crossfire subwoofers provide the bass, which are nestled in their own custom enclosure. All enclosures were custom molded by Precision Auto Sound. Additional audio components include Scosche battery terminals and power distribution blocks, and the entire H2 is wired with S12 series speaker cable. The entire system was expertly installed by Precision Sound, in Chino Hills, California. On the video side, the H2 is home to five 10.5-inch Eiger Vision flip-down screens, and an Eiger DVD player. A custom game controller was built by Precision Sound. Lastly, a hitch-plug camera is on call to provide video information at the rear of the H2, which is displayed on a dash-mounted color monitor. When seen in its entirety, the H2 is a stunning piece of aftermarket ingenuity and quality workmanship. However, you really begin to appreciate this vehicle the more you look at the details, and this H2 is chock full of details. So, grab a ladder, hoist yourself in, and travel with Manny and his H2 down the yellow trick road

GMC shows how the 2022 Hummer could have looked even more futuristic
Fri, Oct 23 2020Excitement filled the room when GMC asked its designers to resurrect the Hummer in April 2019, but a tinge of uneasiness permeated the department after executives locked in an early 2020 unveiling date. Luckily, stylists knew what they wanted early on in the development phase, and preliminary design sketches give us a fascinating look at how they shaped the electric off-roader that ended up making its global debut online in October 2020. Hummer, the brand, unceremoniously shut down in 2010 after General Motors failed to sell it to the Chinese, but its design DNA was so strong that stylists were able to pick up where their predecessors left off. All of the sketches published on Instagram by the official General Motors Design account show a boxy truck with a tall front end, a short windshield, and a generous amount of ground clearance. These styling cues trace their roots to the AM General Humvee that entered production in 1984 and made its combat debut when the United States invaded Panama in 1989. Even the wildest drawings still depict a pickup that's immediately recognizable as a Hummer. Most of the early design sketches wear some variation of the seven-slot grille that characterized Hummer's production models; it's a styling cue that hints at a heritage shared with Jeep under the American Motors Corporation (AMC) umbrella. Oddly, none wear the round headlights seen on the H2, the H3, and the HX concept that nearly became the H4. Was GMC afraid that its Hummer would end up looking too much like a Jeep? And, at least one sketch shows a fold-down windshield, a feature that will not make it to the assembly line. Sketches never reach production without modifications made in the name of packaging and safety concerns, and the Hummer is no exception, but stylists did a good job of reinventing the brand's design language without copying or erasing the past. If the company had stuck around long enough to make a second- and a third-generation H2, odds are it would look a lot like the GMC-branded model that will enter production in a year. GMC remains on track to start 2022 Hummer deliveries in late 2021, though it told Green Car Reports that it still hasn't built a fully functional prototype yet. When it arrives, this outdoorsy pickup will land in a burgeoning segment of the truck market that numerous models (including the Rivian R1T and Ford's electric F-150) will also call home.
2022 GMC Hummer EV Drivers' Notes: We can't stop talking about Crab Walk
Sat, Dec 24 2022The 2022 GMC Hummer EV Pickup defies reason and sense in most ways. It’s a pickup that weighs over 9,000 pounds, but will do the 0-60 mph sprint in around 3.0 seconds. That sounds like something to be afraid of, but itÂ’s also something you want to experience. ItÂ’s a feat of engineering to make something so heavy move so quickly, but thatÂ’s what the EV revolution has brought upon us. GMC gets the Hummer up and moving as quickly as it does with three electric motors — one in front and two in the rear — that combine for a nutty 1,000 horsepower and 1,200 pound-feet of torque. All of that power is unleashed in Watts To Freedom (WTF) mode. Your seat starts rumbling; the air suspension lowers you to the ground, and an electrifying soundtrack is played over the speakers to match your throttle applications. Launching this supertruck is an event every single time, but due to its extra-high ride height and off-road chops, sending it down your favorite trail is, too. That is, assuming said trail is wide enough to fit the gargantuan Hummer. Those knobby all-terrain tires keep the Hummer from being even mildly entertaining when you explore the truckÂ’s handling Â… but who cares. Our specific tester is an Edition 1 model, which means it comes fully loaded with every option you can imagine. As such, its price is $110,295. For the amount of performance and capability on display here, that number sounds surprisingly right. ItÂ’s also befitting the HummerÂ’s status as a supertruck, wherein you get everything youÂ’d ever want in one go-anywhere do-anything package. Editor-in-Chief Greg Migliore — The Hummer EV is the biggest rock star vehicle IÂ’ve tested in quite some time. Literally. ItÂ’s huge and attracts a ton of deserved attention. The Hummer design is spot-on, especially the grille, lights and flared fenders. It looks the part. For $110,000, it should also have some substance, and this Edition 1 delivers Super Cruise, Watts to Freedom and CrabWalk, not to mention GMCÂ’s MultiPro tailgate and the removable Sky Panel roof. It feels quick, as you would expect something with 1,000 hp to feel, and itÂ’s shockingly maneuverable. I CrabWalked down my street to show off, navigating around things on the diagonal and amusing the neighbors. Just the regular four-wheel-steering function, which functions similar to those offered by various other cars, allows the Hummer to turn easily and confidently.
Build a Jeep Gladiator 392 next? The Hummer H3T Alpha blazed the trail
Tue, Nov 17 2020The 2021 Wrangler Rubicon 392 will combine the go-anywhere capability of a Jeep's iconic off-roader with the grunt of a V8 for the first time in decades. As cool as that is, we can't help but think Jeep is missing out on a huge opportunity to pair that 470-horsepower, 6.4-liter Hemi V8 with the Wrangler's pickup cousin, the Jeep Gladiator, in the form of a Mojave 392. Autoblog took part in a media Q&A session with Jeep ahead of the Rubicon 392's announcement in which the company's product higher-ups said that there are currently no official plans to build a 392 variant of the Gladiator pickup. But whether or not Jeep has plans, it certainly has precedent, and from our perspective, a market. Rewind to 2008, better known as one of the worst possible years to introduce a gas-guzzling, V8-powered pickup truck. Enter the 2009 Hummer H3T Alpha, the first variant of Hummer's midsize truck/SUV hybrid to be offered with a 5.3-liter V8. The 300-horsepower small-block was an upgrade to the sturdy but relatively uninspiring 3.7-liter inline-5 that the H3 lineup had inherited from its midsize pickup platform mates. As our Jeremy Korzeniewski noted in the Rubicon 392's introductory piece, an open-top Jeep has not been offered with an optional V8 for as long as the "Wrangler" nameplate has existed. The last Jeep 4x4 to do so was still a CJ, or civilian Jeep, and the 304 cubic-inch engine came from American Motors Corporation. Incidentally, this generation of the Wrangler is also the first to be offered in a pickup variant. Cue the beard-stroking. Now, frankly, it's not even remotely fair to compare the H3T's powertrain offerings to the decade-newer Gladiator's, but the Hummer actually boasts a few advantages over Jeep's modern pickup. While most of the Jeep's off-road specs give it an edge, the Gladiator doesn't come close to the H3T's 30.1-degree departure angle, for instance. And in more practical terms, the stubbier H3T has other maneuverability advantages. The Gladiator has 3" of wheelbase and 5" of overall length on the H3T, and a 22.4-foot turning radius to show for it. The Hummer's? Just 18.5'.
