2016 Honda Civic will debut on September 16

The press days for the Frankfurt Motor Show are September 15 and 16. On that second day when all the German hubbub has died down, on other side of the Atlantic, Honda will be unveiling the US-spec production Civic in Detroit and Los Angeles. We'll only get to see the interior and exterior of the standard sedan that day; the coupe, five-door hatchback, the Si, and the Type R won't say hello until later. While there could be information on the Civic's new platform, Honda doesn't plan to offer any details on the new engines and powertrains. The sedan will come with a 1.5-liter VTEC turbocharged four-cylinder mated to either a six-speed manual or a CVT. Speedier versions like the Type R will get the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. Honda is aiming for a fuel economy rating of at least 40 miles per gallon with the base model. As for what's coming beyond that, we have an idea of what the body will look like from the leaked patent images and the concept shown off in New York earlier this year. Spy shots have shown a new console layout within today's basic instrument panel structure, there'll be a better touchscreen and new infotainment system, driver assistance features like Honda LaneWatch and Honda Sensing, and heated rear seats, while the exterior bodywork has some Accord and Acura ILX influences and available LED headlights. Vowing not to make the mistake of the 2012 Civic, Honda says we'll get "sporty driving dynamics, more daring styling, and significantly improved fit and finish." Related Video:

Formula One speeds towards radical thousand-horsepower shakeup

The teams, the drivers, the fans, the circuits... few, if any, were satisfied with how Formula One has shaped up since the current regulations took hold last year. But that doesn't mean they aren't working on it. At a recent meeting of the F1 Strategy Group, the leading parties in the sport outlined a new framework that would radically shake up the cars themselves while keeping costs in check. And the biggest change could see the engines producing around 1,000 horsepower. Although a proposal put forth by Ferrari to ditch the current V6 hybrid engines in favor of new twin-turbocharged units was rejected by Honda and Mercedes, the members of the group approved in principal to increase the fuel flow in the existing engines to dramatically boost output. As it stands, the current 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 engines develop around 600 horsepower, with an additional 160 or so kicked in by the electric Energy Recovery System, for a combined output of about 760 hp. What's not clear at the moment is whether the increased fuel flow would necessitate either the return of mid-race refueling (currently banned) or the installation of larger fuel tanks. Red Bull and McLaren also submitted proposals to radically redesign the shape of the cars as well, however a more evolutionary approach was adopted instead. Though far from finalized, the new design would keep the same basic form of the current chassis, but with adjustments to make them more aesthetically pleasing while producing more downforce. Wider tires are also said to be part of the mix. With more power and more grip from the tires and aero, the resulting cars would most certainly end up going much faster than the current ones, which are already starting to nudge the lap records at some of the circuits, many of which were set during the V10 era. The F1 Strategy Group is made up of representatives of the FIA, Formula One Management and six leading teams. The next step will be for the teams' technical directors to iron out how to implement what their bosses have agreed to. If they settle the details fast enough, the revised regulations could be pushed through in time for next season. Honda installs 3-minute, fast-fuelling hydrogen fuel station in California

OK, but let's see how well Honda can control hydrogen refueling temperature in Houston or Buffalo. That's what some pessimists may be saying now that the Japanese automaker has installed a fast-fueling hydrogen station in the oh-so-temperate environs of Torrance, CA. That city is about 20 miles southwest of downtown Los Angeles and a sliver of it actually touches the Pacific Ocean, so we're not talking about wild swings in air temperature here. Honda is calling its fast-refueling platform the MC Fill (we'd expect a lawsuit if it was McFill, even though that'd be clever) and says that filling up takes about 45 percent less time than the typical hydrogen-refueling station. That's because the system monitors the ambient temperature in order to speed up the process. There's more scientific stuff in there - for example, the fact that the MC name comes from the "two key values in a heat transfer equation- 'M' for mass and 'C' for specific heat" - but the long and the short of it is that a hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle can fill up in less than three minutes. That's pretty impressive, despite the distinct lack of vehicles needing to charge that fast today. Honda unveiled its FCEV Concept vehicle at the Los Angeles Auto Show last November. The five-seat vehicle has a range of more than 300 miles, while its fuel-stack power density is about 60 percent higher than its previous version.
