Honda Civic Concept is your average neon green, turbocharged show stealer [w/video]
Wed, Apr 1 2015At an auto show where the hottest cars and concepts are increasingly shown off the night before the official doors even open, surprises are rare. But Honda pulled off a big one this afternoon, with a nuclear green Civic Concept that takes dead aim at the brand's naysayers. Honda "concept" cars have tended towards the literal in recent years, and never has that been more exciting than with this coupe. The prelude to the tenth-generation Civic has a face that fits in well enough with the company's current lineup, but the rest of the bodywork feels far more JDM-inspired. The sides are complex without being too busy, and the bold graphic elements, especially the wraparound taillight, seem punctuate the mass. You might not dig the green meanie as much as we do, but if you're a Honda fan (even lapsed) the performance news should have you high-fiving your nearest bro. To start, Honda has confirmed that this Civic will be the first in the US to incorporate turbocharged VTEC engines. The turbo'd 1.5-liter four will get hooked up to both a six-speed manual and a CVT. Civic is also going to get a bodystyle that Honda has neglected in our country for too long: the five-door hatchback. A moment of silence, please... Of course sedans and coupes will be part of the mix, too. But perhaps the most exciting news for lead-footed fan boys will be the inclusion of both a Civic Si and the Nurburgring-champion Civic Type R for our market. We'd both hoped and suspected that the Type R might make the leap to North America, and Honda hasn't disappointed. The gen-ten Civic will go on sale in the US this fall, though no specifics have yet been offered about which variants will be first and last. Stay tuned. Honda Ridgeline spy shots show more truck-like lines
Tue, Nov 17 2015Honda is preparing to roll out its all-new, second-generation Ridgeline. And while we've seen several hints at what it will look like, this is our best look yet. This prototype has dropped all the heavy body cladding and shows its overall shape. As you can see from these latest spy shots, the new Honda Ridgeline will adopt a more conventional form than the model it replaces. So while it still has a bit of a flying buttress behind the C-pillar and above the front of the pickup bed, it looks nowhere near as deep and enveloping one on the outgoing model. The bed also appears to incorporate lighting into its liner. The new Ridgeline still appears to optimize the quad-cab to short-bed ratio proportions. However it looks set to compete more actively in the resurgent midsize pickup market than its segment-defying predecessor. In that regard, Honda aims to more directly take on the likes of the Toyota Tacoma, Nissan Frontier, and Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon. What we can't see from these spy shots are details like the lights and grille treatment. However the Baja show truck revealed at SEMA mere weeks ago provided glimpses at those elements. Combine that with the still-camouflaged prototype pictured here, and we're starting to get a pretty solid idea of what the four-door pickup will look like once it reaches production. Related Video:
Honda adds 4.5 million vehicles to Takata recall, none in North America
Thu, Jul 9 2015The already massive Takata airbag inflator recall is getting 4.5-million units larger across the world. Honda is issuing an expansion to its safety campaign in many foreign markets. Of those newly affected cars, about 1.63 million of them are in Japan. None of these models are in North America. According to Reuters, Honda decided on this recall expansion after analyzing 1,000 inflators from vehicles not previously covered by its campaigns. The company found that the density of the gas-producing chemicals varied in them, which could cause a safety problem in the future. The models affected include foreign versions of the Fit and CR-V with production dates between 2007 and 2011, the Associated Press reports. Research suggests that Takata's inflators can be affected by exposure to moisture. This can cause the propellant to ignite too quickly and the component to shoot metal shrapnel when the airbag deploys. The issue has been linked to eight deaths worldwide, and there was a recent report of the issue causing a vehicle fire in a Nissan in Japan. The global inflator recall has had serious affects on Honda's books, as well. The Japanese automaker recently had to revise earnings from last year to account for an extra $363 million in costs from the campaigns and has been dealing with lawsuits over the issue. To improve quality, the company decided not to set sales goals through at least 2017. Honda last expanded the recall in Japan in late May to cover another 340,000 vehicles. It has also been searching for Takata's inflators in junkyards in the US. Related Video:
