2018 Honda Odyssey bests Pacifica, Sienna in minivan crash, LATCH tests

Thu, Aug 16 2018

Honda has a lot to be proud of following the latest round of passenger small-overlap crash testing by the IIHS. The safety organization tested the 2018 Honda Odyssey, 2018 Chrysler Pacifica and 2018 Toyota Sienna, and the Odyssey managed the best rating of "Good." The Pacifica followed behind with an "Acceptable" rating, and the Sienna brought up the rear with just a "Marginal." Both the Pacifica and Sienna lost points because the structure around the passengers collapsed to differing extents, leading to parts of the structure intruding into the passenger compartment. The Pacifica didn't intrude enough to harm passengers, with each injury area still having a Good rating, but the Sienna's structure intruded far enough to potentially harm the leg and foot areas, leading to an Acceptable rating in those specific areas. In addition to the small overlap crash test, the IIHS evaluated all three minivans for LATCH child seat anchor ease of use. Once again, the Odyssey aced the test with a Good+ rating, which is awarded for both ease of use and offering multiple anchor point options. The Pacifica and Sienna swap the crash test ratings, with a Marginal for the Chrysler and an Acceptable for the Sienna. The Odyssey and Pacifica can both brag that they're Top Safety Picks, and they'd get Top Safety Pick+ awards if they weren't hampered by headlights that only get Acceptable ratings. The Toyota Sienna fails to earn the regular Top Safety Pick award because both small overlap tests yielded results that were too low. Only one other minivan tested by IIHS has the Top Safety Pick rating, and that's the Kia Sedona. It earns an Acceptable rating in LATCH usability, and its headlights actually earned a Good rating. It hasn't undergone passenger-side small overlap crash testing yet. If it fares well, it could get bumped up to a Top Safety Pick+ rating. Honda Clarity goes on sale in Japan, but only 200 units a year

Fri, Mar 11 2016

Honda has officially started leasing its Clarity hydrogen fuel cell vehicle to select customers in Japan, and the sedan should arrive at a few dealers in California late in the year. Once the model is available in the US, expect the Clarity to be the natural challenger to the Toyota Mirai FCEV. The Clarity boasts an electric motor with 174 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque. In Japan's JC08 test, Honda claims the sedan can travel the equivalent of 466 miles, but that evaluation is more lenient than its US equivalent. The automakers expects the sedan to receive an EPA-estimated driving distance of over 300 miles. Prices in Japan begin at the current equivalent of $67,800. However, examples here should retail for around $60,000 and lease for under $500 a month. The Toyota Mirai is similar to the Clarity in major categories, including an EPA range of 312 miles and leases for $499 a month. The two of them should have quite a fight. Honda plans to limit Clarity production to 200 units in Japan for the first year, and only government agencies or businesses can lease them there. After the company collects impressions from these clients, it intends to make the sedan available to individuals. The decision only to lease the Clarity at first evokes the early days at of electric vehicles when companies like General Motors used the strategy to get the EV1 to customers. One thing that could give Honda the edge in the upcoming hydrogen fuel cell battle is its history in the market. The company first offered them with the FCX and later followed up with the FCX Clarity. By this point, the automaker should be well acquainted with the process. Striving to realize full-fledged popularization of FCVs, Honda created Clarity Fuel Cell as an FCV featuring both a high level of practicality that represents the "universal value" of an automobile and "cutting-edge appeal" that is suitable for a vehicle that is at the forefront of the times. Clarity Fuel Cell is the world's first*1 five-passenger sedan type FCV, realized by making the fuel cell powertrain more compact using original Honda technologies and fitting it entirely under the hood of the car.

2016 Honda Civic will debut on September 16

Wed, Aug 26 2015

The press days for the Frankfurt Motor Show are September 15 and 16. On that second day when all the German hubbub has died down, on other side of the Atlantic, Honda will be unveiling the US-spec production Civic in Detroit and Los Angeles. We'll only get to see the interior and exterior of the standard sedan that day; the coupe, five-door hatchback, the Si, and the Type R won't say hello until later. While there could be information on the Civic's new platform, Honda doesn't plan to offer any details on the new engines and powertrains. The sedan will come with a 1.5-liter VTEC turbocharged four-cylinder mated to either a six-speed manual or a CVT. Speedier versions like the Type R will get the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. Honda is aiming for a fuel economy rating of at least 40 miles per gallon with the base model. As for what's coming beyond that, we have an idea of what the body will look like from the leaked patent images and the concept shown off in New York earlier this year. Spy shots have shown a new console layout within today's basic instrument panel structure, there'll be a better touchscreen and new infotainment system, driver assistance features like Honda LaneWatch and Honda Sensing, and heated rear seats, while the exterior bodywork has some Accord and Acura ILX influences and available LED headlights. Vowing not to make the mistake of the 2012 Civic, Honda says we'll get "sporty driving dynamics, more daring styling, and significantly improved fit and finish." Related Video:
