Often referred to as the greatest car ever, the Honda Accord four-door Sedan is among the best-selling cars in the United States. Numerous road tests, past and present, rate the Accord as one of the world's most reliable vehicles and has been on the Car and Driver 10 Best list over 26 times.
This fourth generation Accord EX has a powerful 2.2-liter 16-valve electronic fuel-injected engine and 4-speed automatic transmission. The car is extremely versatile, economical and reliable with a 26 MPG fuel economy rating.
With the attrition rate of these cars often accelerated by juvenile, second hand owners and highway commuters, it'd be a nice surprise to find an un-molested, low-mile example of the species that, despite being 22-years-old, still sparkles, shines and runs like a late model.
The most likely place to unearth such a rare gem would be Southern California, with its mild climate and large number affluent, automobile owners. Such an amazing find is the miraculously well preserved example presented for auction here! Having been loved and cherished by a WW II Vet and his Southern CA family since new, this Honda has led a charmed life. Let’s take a closer look now.
Exterior:
This wonderful Accord EX is as nice and as original as it gets. Still wearing nearly 100% of its factory applied paint, it never suffered from neglect or corrosion and is as virginally preserved as one could hope for.
Always garaged and pampered, you won’t find many cars of this age in such outstanding condition.
Some years ago, the front of the car was professionally re-finished to repair cosmetic damage from a minor mishap.
Otherwise, the car is still wearing its factory original paint and there is no rust or collision damage. If you look closely at the pictures, you’ll see there are a few small chips, dings and scratches and the finish isn’t perfect but overall, has held up well given its 22 years old.
Surveying the car's straight and smooth coachwork today, we marvel at how well the finish was preserved over the years.
Newer radial tires are mounted to the original alloy wheels which still have amazing detail.
Speaking of detail, let us stress how straight the body is - reflecting true pride of ownership: if you wouldn't know differently, you'd think to be looking at a 2-year old, not a 22-year old car. This one is that clean! Let’s have a look inside. Interior:
Open the doors and you will find the original interior is in incredible condition!
The velour bucket seats look and feel like they’ve never been sat-in.
The carpets, door panels and headliner are immaculate.
The Accord has A/C, tilt wheel, cruise control, power windows, mirrors door locks and sliding moon roof.
The pristine dashboard and steering wheel are crack free,
The instruments function perfectly and the 139,782 miles are original!
All the switches, and the original AM/FM/Cassette unit work and the air-conditioning still blows ice cold.
As you can see in the photos, no panel cuts or modifications were ever made - leaving this interior 100% original and pristine.
Everything in this non-smoker interior looks, smells and operates as if the car was delivered 2 years ago, not 22 years.
This one is that clean!
Let’s have a look inside the trunk.
The carpet lined trunk is very spacious and the rear seat folds down to provide even more room.
Under the panel, the original spare and jack tools are located.
A picture tells a thousand words; this all original trunk is clean! Let’s have a peak under the hood.
Engine & Mechanical:
The immaculate engine compartment is 100% original. Featuring the legendary 2.2-liter 16-valve electronic fuel-injected engine, it is known for its reliability and longevity. It starts quickly, idles very smoothly with no smoke or unusual noises. The engine is mated to a four-speed automatic which brings this Accord EX to perfection.
Beyond religious oil and fluid changes, services were performed at the recommended intervals.
Evidence of recent maintenance can be seen in these detailed photos of replaced ancillary components including a new radiator, alternator, battery, belts and hoses.
As a result, this low-mile Accord is mechanically as strong as it is cosmetically. Yes, any Honda can be very tough, reliable and will last forever with a bit of preventative maintenance!
Drivability: The powerful 2.2-liter 16-valve electronic fuel-injected engine and 4-speed automatic transmission, provide a pleasant blend of comfort and agility. In any climate, the engine starts every time, idles, revs and pulls effortlessly without unusual noises or hesitation and accelerates strong and smooth leaving no smoke in your rear-view mirror or drips in your driveway. Warmed up, the coolant temperature remains absolutely stable, with no hint of overheating even after extended runs in rush hour traffic. The “Check Engine” light flashes on occasion but all components presently check out, the emissions are in order as a smog check and certificate at a Star Station was just issued verifying all systems function properly. Fuel economy rates 19 mpg city, 26 mpg highway. Steering is precise and the new disk brakes anchor the car securely, in a straight line, and without any hint of fading. Aided with newer radial tires, handling is superb with no rattles, shakes, shimmies or pulls. All in all, this Accord EX is a joy to drive. Despite its age, the car is perfectly reliable and ready to be driven anywhere, even across the Country, if that's where you live.
Finally, with an original MSRP of over $16,000, the 1991 Honda Accord EX has reached the bottom-end of the depreciation curve; a perfect time to buy. Here is the current NADA value for 1991 Honda Accord EX http://www.nadaguides.com/Classic-Cars/1991/Honda/Accord/4-Door-Sedan-EX/Values
Well, here’s one that not only survived the ravages of time but is up to any task imaginable. To state it succinctly: This Accord delivers on its promise! There's but one stumbling block on the way to Honda Heaven: Immaculate, garaged, meticulously maintained, low mile examples have become increasingly hard to find.
All the more reason to watch this one closely...

Honda invests $25m on hot-weather testing facility in Mojave
Fri, Dec 11 2015Situated in the Mojave Desert near Cantil, CA, the Honda Proving Center of California is a 4,255-acre facility incorporating a 7.5-mile high-speed oval and a 4.5-mile road course. The location also has a series of off-road routes for testing trucks, dirt bikes, and the like. It first opened in 1990 but ceased functioning twenty years later, after which we saw it listed for sale online. Honda evidently had a change of heart, and is now setting about refurbishing the facility and putting it back into active duty. Backed by an investment of $25 million, the warm-weather proving ground is set to reopen next April. Exact details of the renovation plan have not been announced, but the existing features are set to be refurbished and some new ones added to the site. Honda currently undertakes most of its vehicle testing in America at the Transportation Research Center located near its plants in East Liberty and Marysville, OH. It also operates to major proving grounds back home in Japan in Takasu and Tochigi, and a dedicated motorcycle R&D center with its own test track in Asaka. It also owns the Motegi complex, complete with road course and oval speedway, near its main facility in Tochigi. Related Video: Honda to Enhance California Proving Center in 2016 $25 million investment will renovate the warm weather testing facility Dec 8, 2015 - TORRANCE, Calif. Driven by the expanding responsibility for developing new automotive and power sports products in America and the related need for performance testing, Honda will invest $25 million to renovate the Honda Proving Center of California (HPCC) in the Mojave Desert near Cantil, California. The proving center, which was in operation from 1990 through 2010, is scheduled to reopen in April 2016. The 4,255-acre warm weather testing facility features a 7.5-mile high speed oval track and a 4.5-mile winding road course that will be completely refurbished. The renovations also will include the addition of some new vehicle test road enhancements to the property. "As we continue to accelerate our growth in the U.S. market with a competitive line up of cars and trucks designed and developed in the U.S., we are reinvesting in HPCC to create a world-class test facility," said John Mendel, executive vice president of the Automobile Division of American Honda Motor, Co., Inc.
Honda HR-V gets early reveal
Mon, 17 Nov 2014If the Honda HR-V feels awfully familiar to you by now, you're not alone. We've seen it debut in Japanese form (dubbed "Vezel"), caught a prototype in Paris, and Honda first showed us the US-spec version in press-photo form all the way back at the New York Auto Show in April. We're finally going to get all the details on Honda's new subcompact crossover this week as part of the Los Angeles Auto Show, but first, we're getting an early look at the CUV today.
We met the Honda HR-V for a cup of coffee this morning at Randy's Donuts just outside of Los Angeles, and got our first look at the new CUV in the metal. It's a handsome little thing, offering a higher-riding, more butch alternative to the Fit hatchback on which it's based. We particularly like how the rear door handles are integrated into the pillars, for an almost three-door look from some angles.
Technical details are still scarce as of this writing, though we expect those to be revealed during Honda's press conference on Wednesday. For now, we just know that the HR-V should be an incredibly practical little thing, using the Magic Seat system that has made the Fit such a versatile and capacious subcompact. Stay tuned for more, and see the HR-V from all angles in our live gallery, above.
US Honda Civic to get Type R engine
Mon, Dec 15 2014Honda is bent on kicking butt and taking names with its upcoming new Civic Type R, but since the Japanese hot hatch is based on the European model and isn't slated to come to the United States, it's been of little consolation to American enthusiasts. But if you're one of them, we've got good news for you. According to Spanish site Motor Y Racing, a US version of the Civic Type R is in the works. The salient part of the Type R that would make the oceanic voyage to US showrooms would be the 2.0-liter turbo four that's said to produce between 276 and 320 horsepower, but we could expect upgraded suspension, rolling stock and other equipment to come as part of the package as well. Just what form it would take we don't know. Currently American Honda offers the Civic as a coupe or sedan - not as a hatchback or wagon like it does overseas - so chances are that it'd be one of these betrunked body-styles that would get the upgrades. We're hoping for something more than an upgrade of the current Civic Si. Competing rumors suggest that Honda could offer that same engine in a revised version of the CR-Z hybrid hatchback, which has long been begging for a more potent powerplant. But that's not to say that Honda couldn't offer both with the new turbo VTEC engine. Having driven prototypes for more performance-oriented versions of both the Civic and the CR-Z at Honda's R&D center in Japan a little over a year ago, this writer could tell you that either prospect bodes well for the return of the red H badge to the high-performance arena.
