Based on wing, next Civic Type R may go eleventy billion mph

Honda just returned to the hot hatch arena with the new Civic Type R. And what a beast it is. But as we know, there's already a new Civic on its way. That is slated to include a new Type R as well, and that's just what our spy photographers have caught undergoing testing at the Nurburgring. Underneath all that camouflage we can see that this prototype is packing an aggressive front end, a giant rear wing, and a trio of tailpipes protruding out the back. Expect the new Type R to offer even more power than the current one, which already produces a stonking 306 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. That's already enough to propel the existing model to 60 miles per hour in 5.7 seconds and lap the Nordschleife in a front-drive record-beating 7:50.63. (Though not enough to match the Ford Focus RS, as we recently found out.) Best of all, we've got good cause to be optimistic that the new Civic Type R will be offered in the United States (unlike the current one) to dice it with the likes of that new fast Ford. We're told that the new Civic will be rolled out first as a sedan, then as a coupe, followed by the five-door hatch, the warmed-up Civic Si, and finally the Type R. That means we should look for Honda's new hot hatch to arrive in about a year from now as a 2017 model. In the meantime, you can scope out the latest spy shots in the gallery above. Related Video:

Honda's new hybrid will cut use of rare-earth metals

Honda will start selling a hybrid vehicle later this year that will reduce the use of rare-earth metals in the hybrid-electric motor's magnets. The Japanese automaker worked with Japanese metal supplier Daido Steel Co. to develop a process that eliminates the use of rare-earth elements such as terbium or dysprosium. The first vehicle to feature this process will be the Honda Freed subcompact minivan, which is based on the platform of the Fit and will go on sale in Japan later this year. The new technology will help free Honda from its dependence on China, which produces about 90 percent of the world's rare-earth metals. The new process uses what's called the "hot deformation method" to eliminate the need for the heavier metals and likely reduce hybrid-engine costs. Honda's new hybrid motors use a lighter rare-earth material called neodymium. With both electric and hybrid vehicle production forecast to grow within the next few years, rare-earth metal demand is forecast to rise by 14 percent a year to more than $9 billion by 2019, Automotive News says, citing an estimate from technology-research company Technavio Research. Honda estimates that the new process cuts the cost of making the motors' magnets by about 10 percent while reducing their weight by about eight percent, Reuters says. Additionally, neodymium is found in Australia and North America, as well as China. Honda has been selling a gas-powered version of the Freed in Japan since 2008. Three years later, Honda started selling a hybrid version of the minivan, which was rated to get 51 miles per gallon on the Japanese driving cycle. 2015 Honda Civic Type R to sire next-gen CR-Z?

Salt shakers at the ready, boys and girls. There's a rumor out of Australia claiming the next Honda CR-Z will be based on the forthcoming 276-horsepower, turbocharged Civic Type R. Apparently Honda's research and development bigwigs have been unnerved by the reception of the Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ twins and are eager to return fire.
Now, don't get too excited - Honda isn't following the Volkswagen model of offering virtually unchanged mechanicals in a different bodyshell (Beetle Turbo and GTI, for example). Instead, the report says the future CR-Z will retain its hybrid powertrain, albeit with a serious kick in the pants. A prototype is said to already be zipping around Japan with a turbocharged, direct-injected, 1.5-liter, four-cylinder engine and the current CR-Z's electric motor and battery pack. With a reported 221 horsepower mated up to a seven-speed, dual-clutch transmission (say buh-bye to the CVT and six-speed manual) and the next-gen Civic platform underneath, the rumored CR-Z has all the makings of a hot hatch riot.
Of course, this all sounds wonderful. This is also the point where you should be enjoying that salt. We really like the idea of a properly hot CR-Z that can compete with John Cooper Works Mini models and the new Ford Fiesta ST, but the three-door hybrid has been such a slow seller for Honda in the US that it might not field a second generation here, no matter how improved it might be.
