Honda Clarity proves hydrogen future always costs $500/month

Thu, Jan 21 2016

How do you price the only car in its class? The closest thing to a Honda Clarity is the Toyota Mirai. They're both hydrogen-powered sedans, but one seats five and the other only four (the Mirai loses out, there). The only other hydrogen-powered vehicle available in the US, the Hyundai Tucson CUV, is, well, a CUV. So, really, there's no direct competitor to the Clarity. But you wouldn't know that from the price tag. Speaking this morning at the Washington Auto Show, Honda executive vice president John Mendel announced that the Clarity will have an MSRP of around $60,000 and will lease for "under $500" a month. As with other Honda vehicles, the exact numbers won't be made public until closer to the vehicle's launch date, but we assume things won't change too much. For those keeping track, those Clarity numbers are pretty much exactly what the Mirai costs. That car costs $57,500 and leases for $499/month. The Tucson can only be leased, but it, too, costs $499 a month. The Mirai and Tucson also come with free hydrogen. Honda didn't say today if the Clarity will include that bonus, but since not all hydrogen stations in California - the only place where the Clarity will be available for now – work like standard pumps, there's a good chance new hydrogen Honda owners will be able to fuel for free, too. We'll know more when the Clarity actually goes on sale – and it will be for sale and lease – later this year. Auto Show. Slated to begin retail leasing to customers in select California markets before the end of 2016, the Clarity Fuel Cell is expected to be priced around $60,000 with a targeted monthly lease under $500. Honda expects limited volumes in the early stages of production.

Renderings have us excited for reinvigorated Honda Civic Si

Tue, Oct 6 2015

Realistically, we know there's no way the new Honda Civic Si will look exactly like the stunning, green, two-door coupe that debuted at the 2015 New York Auto Show. But, as these renderings show, there is a future where the production Si will look very nearly as good as that concept car. Now, it's very important to note that these are not official renderings. Instead, they've been assembled by CivicX.com, and are based on everything from the production Civic sedan, to spy shots of the upcoming coupe, to the flashy concept that foreshadowed the new compact earlier this year. Inspiration was also drawn from previous Si models. As always, take these shots with a grain of salt. That warning has never been so hard to follow, though. These renderings show off a coupe that is very nearly as cool as the concept, while still remaining firmly planted in the real world. In our mind, the front end is the most accurate part of these renderings, taking the production Civic Sedan's and applying a suitable layer of aggression. Other aspects look good, but are probably a bit too fanciful, like the huge wheels and ultra-low-profile tires – seriously, those look like 35-series rubber. That's madness. We aren't crazy about the back, either. With that pedestal spoiler, huge taillight element, and busy rear bumper, there's just too much going on at the tail of these Civic Si renderings. We wouldn't mind seeing a smaller spoiler, perhaps one that doesn't so heavily obscure the handsome fastback tail. A wider diffuser would help, too. It seems underdeveloped here, almost like it was tacked on at the last minute. Check out the full range of renderings, which give us a look at a potential version of the new Si in a variety of traditional colors, including what looks like Taffeta White and Rallye Red. Honda names first woman, foreigner to its board of directors

Mon, 24 Feb 2014

General Motors may have made headlines when it recently appointed the industry's first female CEO, but Honda has long lagged woefully behind the times when it comes to the diversity of its top management. In fact, its entire board has until now been composed entirely of Japanese men, with not a foreigner or a woman in sight. But as Reuters reports, that's all changing with the nominations to its latest board.
The slate of new directors named to Honda's board includes one Hideko Kunii, a gender-equality advocate and engineering professor from the Shibaura Institute of Technology. A graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, Kunii spent the bulk of her career at Japanese electronic imaging company Ricoh. Alongside Kunii, Honda has also named Tomoko Mizoguchi to the board as responsible for the company's South American operations, making him the first foreigner to serve on the company's board of directors. (Well, almost: Mizoguchi was born in Brazil, but of Japanese ancestry.)
The appointments follow the recent switch Honda made in its official language policy from Japanese to English, signaling a shift in outlook for a company that has long stuck to traditional Japanese business models. Honda was the first of the major Japanese automakers to begin manufacturing in the United States, and has long relied on hiring local managers to run its regional operations around the world. It has, however, resisted placing foreigners on its board of directors until now, relying instead on senior male managers promoted from within its ranks to serve on its board. This in comparison to Toyota, which has seven foreigners and one woman on its 68-member board of directors, and Nissan, which has fifteen foreigners (including its chief executive) and one woman on its 58-member board.
